It would have been an amazing year for Shuffle Along!
You forgot to remove all the nominees from Hamilton who didn't win (Jackson, Groff, Miranda, Soo). If Hamilton wasn't around, they would not have been nominated. That makes the Featured Actor race between 2 men - nice odds! Then again, this is all fake and pointless.
Maybe a better title for this thread would be "Who Came in Second?"
I still don't think Arden would have won if Hamilton wasn't around. The show was long forgotten and unseen by many Tony voters. I'd give it to Doyle.
I still really think that Krysta Rodriguez should've been nominated for Spring Awakening and that Jane Krakowski should've beat Renee for the Tony regardless.
I think we would've seen more love for American Psycho and the show probably wouldn't have closed so early.
Audra Mcdonald would've been nominated for lead actress and Benjamin Walker and Drew Gehling would've been nominated for lead actor. I wonder if Austin Mckenzie would've snuck in for a nomination for Spring Awakening.
Gavin Creel, Nicholas Barasch, and Billy Porter would've picked up featured nominations. I think Christopher Fitzgerald would probably win.
I'm really conflicted about director. John Doyle reinvented a mediocre show into a fantastic show, so in some ways I think he deserves to win, but Michael Arden's direction was so beautiful and creative. I'm going to say that it should've been a tie between the two.
I think Spring Awakening would've landed a choreography nomination. As great as Shuffle Along's choreo was, Fiddler's was so beautifully electrifying so I'm also really conflicted in this category as well.

The wealth really would have been spread. That being said Hamilton deserved every Tony it won, even if some of these (Doyle for example) are near-ties in my mind.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
I agree that this thread could be more aptly titled "Who came in second?" but I like seeing everyone's thoughts on who else would've scored a nomination.
My predictions are pretty much like everyone else's:
Leading Actor - Danny Burstein (Benjamin Walker nom)
Leading Actress - Cynthia Erivo (Krysta Rodriguez nom)
Featured Actor - Christopher Fitzgerald (Gavin Creel, Nicholas Barasch, Billy Porter noms)
Featured Actress - Jane Krakowski (Kimiko Glenn nom)
Musical - Shuffle
Score - Bright Star or Waitress, probably Bright Star
Book - Shuffle. Still felt overly long and draggy to me, but better than the other nominees.
Direction - Spring Awakening or The Color Purple? Oof, difficult. Tony voters likely to award Color Purple though.
Interesting that most think Waitress score would best Bright Star, even though the latter won both the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle awards for score while Bareilles' received zilch.

I wonder if the inclusion of both music and lyrics in the "Score" category would make any difference. Bright Star won for music at the Drama Desks, but did not for lyrics. I know OCC has both as well but their voters tend to go a little differently from Tony/DD voters.

Sound Design - She Loves Me (Shuffle, American Psycho, The Color Purple noms)"
Perhaps it was my seat...but I would NOT give She Loves Me sound design. Had I not known the words many of the lyrics would have been lost. American Psycho deserves that one.

This maybe unfair, but I really believe a few shows held off until after the 2015-2016 season in order to avoid competing with Hamilton. So if Hamilton didn't exist, the season may have been much different.

Just wondering, where did you sit? I sat pretty much in the same place for She Loves Me and American Psycho (mid orch, left aisle). The great thing about sitting there for AP was getting to pick up one of those fake notes shot out and sprayed everywhere.
A8, I leave grim reality to you- or at least the grim aspects.
I emphasized that it was just for fun, not scientific analysis, so I didn't bother to replace nominees- I wasn't interested in a rigorous creation of an alternate universe, (ideally with A8 as our Supreme Ruler).
Go into it in more detail if you like, but I'll stick with whimsy.

I had the same problem -- sound mixing wasn't good in the left front mezzanine. (probably because half the musicians were directly to my left). Good to know I wasn't the only person with the problem.
Here's what I think this year's Tony Awards would've looked like if Hamilton was not in the running.
