I haven't seen anything about this on any of the "usual" places. However, the Music Director of the show has spoken about the recording being released after the show airs, and Pasek and Paul have also stated that this will be the first recording of the show's numbers as they were rewritten for the Broadway production. Also, there is a video of some young singer singing a new song that P & P wrote for the opening (and it sounds WAY too contemporary). I guess this means they are dispensing with the overture?
I don't love how Pasek and Paul are sticking to a contemporary style. One of the things I liked about them was the range between A Christmas Story, Dogfight, and Dear Evan Hansen. It showed that they knew how to write music that was perfectly tailored to the story. Now they seem to be sticking to one style and it's all starting to sound the same.
They should have just recorded the original Broadway cast after they made all those changes, although I assume the stage version will undergo more changes and productions next year will feature the new material from this television version.
