THE WEDDING SINGER: Has an opening date...but no theatre.

Quick question.

As we all know, Broadway.com has THE WEDDING SINGER listed as beginning previews on March 30th with a planned April 27th opening.

How can this show list it's start dates when it hasn't even booked a theatre yet?

Is this just their tentative dates if a Jujamcyn theatre is open in time for the show to move in? Does this mean that they have a theatre but don't want to make it public yet?

There's been a lot of discussion as to which theatre it will be...and I guess these dates mean that they're the backup plan for a theatre just in case its current tenant doesn't work out.

My guess is that they have a deal for a theatre in place. But it's good etiquette among producers to not announce a theatre when it is presently occupied and the current tenant has not yet announced its closing date.

NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! re: THE WEDDING SINGER: Has an opening date...but no theatre.
or...what else could close?
"pop...six...squish...aha!...cisero...lip****z"
actually, maybe CHICAGO will close next-its not doing THE greatest, and the famous people are only supposed to do it till March, allowing them to close with the show...

anyone have any ideas?

Chicago is doing very well. It's dirt cheap to run, it has been having grosses in the $500,000-600,000 range, with an average ticket price in the high $60s. On top of it, it's in one of the least used theatres on Broadway, so they probably have a break on rent as well. It has a couple of years left in it, easily.

People...don't just throw random theatre names out there.

There are five Jujamcyn theatres:
THE AL HIRSCHFELD
THE VIRGINIA (AUGUST WILSON)
THE WALTER KERR
THE ST.JAMES
THE EUGENE O'NEILL

Any other theatre is NOT a current possibility.

I'd say the only two real possibilities at the moment would be the Walter Kerr and the Al Hirschfeld, and the Walter Kerr is probably too small for a musical, though who knows.

442 - I don't think they will close SWEENEY by then. After seeing it, I think it has the chance to run for quite a while. But only time will tell.

Thesbijean - According to Playbill.com:
"The Wedding Singer, a new musical based on the hit Adam Sandler movie of the same name, will open on Broadway in spring 2006.

Producers Margo Lion, New Line Cinema and the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle announced that the production will open at a Jujamcyn theatre in April 2006; previews are set to begin in March."

So...yes the Jujamcyn "thing" is accurate. I would stop listening to those reliable sources...were these the same people who said THE LION KING wasn't going anywhere any time soon...because they were wrong there, too.

I can't imagine the show would be all that profitable in the Walter Kerr.

Its best option is The Virginia, but that's hedging on the possibility that Jersey Boys doesn't catch on, and disappears quickly (I have no opinion either way about that show, having not seen it).

It's also possible, albeit unlikely, that the general public stays away from this Sweeney Todd, and that closes quicker than people expect.

Obviously, the St. James is out of the picture.

The Hirschfield is a mystery. I don't think the Wei$$lers will close the show if they can get someone to come in and keep the show profitable, and word is they are already looking.

This will be VERY interesting when we find out which theater it is. I can't wait.

I still stand by my opinion that it wont be the HIRSCHFLED. Why in the world would the two most money hungry producers close a show that is grossing almost a half of mill. a week, and filling on average 80 percent of the theatre. If the show can keep attendance in the 80's, there is NO reason to close the show.

I think without a doubt the show will make it through the 06 Tonys. For obvious reasons.

It will not be the Hilton. How many times must we go through this. It will play at a Jujamcyn Theater. The Hilton is not one of those.

And Ljay, I concur with your opinion about the Hirschfield- if there is any money to be made from that show, the Wei$$lers will keep it open.

And I also look at it this way ...

WONDERFUL TOWN was doing a lot worse than Charity. Attendance in the 50's and 60's every week. But did they give up? NO. They got Brooke and kept the show open.

So why the hell would they shut down Charity which is doing much better than WT?

They are also VERY smart by getting "names" for some of the other featured parts like Herman. Because I think it's obvious some people are seeing the show because of Wayne Knight.

And I also think Fran & Barry are way to smart to cast Brooke in another one of their revivals as a replacement. They know better. For all we know they could have Claire Danes in vocal training right now to prepare for the part, since she said her only setback would be that she can't sing.

As much as I love the show...and I do.

Take into consideration that the Weisslers were ready to close this show before it even hit Broadway. They may make the smart decision to close the show in the black...unless they find a suitable name replacement for Christina.

re: THE WEDDING SINGER: Has an opening date...but no theatre.

Out of curiosity, I just went to telecharge, and Sweet Charity is only on sale through 12/31, while every other musical not already scheduled to close is on sale through almost February. Interesting.

re: THE WEDDING SINGER: Has an opening date...but no theatre.

Right now, Sweet Charity IS doing around $500,000 a week, but at a rock bottom average ticket price of $51.00. (Only Rent, Movin' Out, In My Life and Chitty (!) have lower average ticket prices). A show can live on that for a while, but it's hard to recover from such heavy discounting. I think the Weisslers would need a major casting coup for the show to continue after Christina Applegate departs. Also, BroadwayStars.com has a blind item about Molly Ringwald doing the tour of Sweet Charity. Perhaps the Weisslers would do better to shut the Broadway production down in January, when business is impossible anyway, put the production in storage, and make their money up on the road with Ringwald.
