Is Color Purple appropriate (and entertaining enough) for kids (10 years old and up)?

Some parents may object to the lesbian storyline. It is handled with great tact and dignity, but still...some parents don't want to open up the dialogue at that age. Or ever.

Well, I'd say it is totally appropriate. It doesn't thrust it in your face like RENT does. (Though I'm not against it) Kids are going to find out about it sometime. Best they do it in a form of classy art than on MTV.

So other than this storyline being a possible issue, will kids enjoy the show? Will they understand it?

They should. If they know anything about the time period, they should get it. The songs are a bit gospel-ish for a child. They aren't big brassy and fun numbers. But, if they like theatre, they should appreciate this show.

My answer would be no. I went in with zero knowledge of the Color Purple movie or book. I did not have quite the visceral reaction to it that people who already know the story apparently do. I offer this since I'm guessing your child doesn't know the story... I suppose a kid may understand parts of it, but so much is implied or hinted at instead of obviously shown on the stage (i.e. Lion King which does so well with kids). I really think they'll be bored. Personally, I'd grab girlfriend and take the kids to something else.

I don't think the show is by any means unsuitable for children, but if it's someone that's seeing a Broadway show for the first time, take them to something else. If they've seen a lot of Broadway productions and are interested, they'd be fine.

I agree with ShuQ. At 10, I probably would have loved it. But most 10 year olds I know would be bored and confused. And most of their parents wouldn't want to do the "explaining."

Have the costumes changed, or are the women's breasts still hanging out in the Lion King scene?

Their boobs are still hanging out....they're not real, of course....they're built into the costume.

I loved The Color Purple. I have seen it twice. Additionally the show is not for children under 15.
Push The Button might be a bit much.
Take your Mother. I took mine and we had so much fun.
I want to go again.

This show is absolutely nothing like Rent.

There is a lesbian relationship in The Color Purple that was skirted over a bit in the film, but if your mom loved the movie, I don't think the subject matter would be too shocking to her.

I say take her.

Let me put it this way -- LaChanze will not let her own children come to the show.
