It's just been announced that Carole Shelley who originated Madame Morrible in WICKED and then played the role twice more in the National Tour & Chicago will be reprising her role on Broadway on August 28th replacing Jayne Houdyshell.

Wow, we did this at the same time!
Im totally thrilled, nothing against Mrs. Houdyshell, but Mrs. Shelley is totally fierce in that role and cant wait to see her live.
How's her back gonna make it with the raked stage?
agreed...I thought she left because the pain of the raked stage on her back. oh well. she must be up for it!
I'm really surprised Alma Cuervo has yet to play the role on Broadway. She was wonderful when I saw her last year on tour in Philadelphia.
MungoGypsy8232 - Wow what a coincidence :)
Thrillifying news. I'll see her on October 7th, October 9th and probably many more times after that (depending on who replaces Julia Murney).
Well she better not complain about the raked stage bothering her back.
I can't tell you how happy this makes me. Carole Shelley > anyone else who ever was or will be in Wicked. Even though I'm not nearly as into Wicked as I used to be, I would fly to New York just to see her if I could.
She is so much better than this show. I don't know why she keeps doing it.
She's one of the most thrilling actresses I've ever seen, though I've never seen her in a musical.
I think Carole Shelley is only going to be in WICKED through the beginning of January 2008, when Miriam Margolyes assumes the role.
So Wicked's pulling a Rent? Well, now that we've got the next Morrible announced, it won't be too long before we've got the next Elphaba and Glinda.

Dottie, you're so right about Alma Cuervo! I really love Carole Shelley in the role, but Alma Cuervo is the only other actress I've seen play the role without thinking, "she's not as good as Carole Shelley." She added some things of her own that were hilarious, yet she was every bit as chilling as she should have been in the right places.

Carole is great but so is Rondi Reed who played the role in Chicago- she's spectacular.

Carole is Amazing, she really stood out to me when I saw the show, she's just so good at doing such small work, I really wish she'd do something else, something to really showcase her.
I'm so happy that Alma Cuervo is working. Thanks for the update.
Good for Carole. She's amazing in the role.
And agreed 100% about Alma! She's fabulous. She's the only reason that I'm going to try to catch the My Fair Lady tour when it comes here.

"I don't know why she keeps doing it."
As usual, I am completely flumoxed by this naivete. Exactly HOW many opportunities are being offered women in her, shall we say, category? If she wants to WORK, having a role available in the BIGGEST SMASH ON BROADWAY is NOT a bad thing - no matter WHAT anyone thinks of the show!
Someday, maybe something can come along that her talents will deserve (things like THE ELEPHANT MAN only come along once in awhile.) Meanwhile, thank goodness she can continue to make a career out of appearing live - that's what she was made for.

Well said, DG.
Okay fine, I get why she keeps doing it. It still disappoints me.

Does anyone know how long her contract is? I have tickets for Wicked in April 2008 - taking my musical theatre class. Would LOVE to see an OBC member!!! Thanks!
Her contract is for four months, I believe. You will be seeing Miriam Margolyes as Morrible in April '08.
