Thank you PJ for taking the time to explain it to me. I appreciate it. I have a better understanding of it now.

Slate has a couple of good columns that address why there was almost zero likelihood of any criminal charges at any point.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/war_stories/2016/07/hillary_s_email_scandal_was_overhyped.html

Scroll down to the second article, too.

There is an important distinction in the law between negligence and gross negligence, and Comey today admitted he had evidence of negligence but not gross negligence.  He also admitted that the markings on the emails deemed classified were not  in proper format and Secretary Clinton may not have realized what they were.  While her statements were "not true," he admits he has no evidence she lied--only that she was wrong.

Look at how the Republicans play you--and the mainstram media!--for chumps:

Gmail accounts and private servers are business as usual, but only Hillary Clinton's integrity is questioned.

PalJoey said: "I think one of the reasons this media storm will not affect voters is that since wikileaks and Edward Snowden, the public has lost its sense of trust in the government's ability to guard electronic secrets."

Speaking (eventually) of Edward Snowden... I don't care at all about Clinton's emails, Bengazi, or any of that.

But I do want to quote a Facebook friend of mine on the ridiculously unequal treatment of people who have been involved with the exposure of classified information:

If we are to consider whether or not there have been "indications of disloyalty to the United States" in deciding whether or not someone committed a crime in the distribution of classified information, I would argue, passionately, that there is no greater display of loyalty than by sacrificing your freedom and very life to expose war crimes committed and subsequently covered up by your government.

Do I care about Clinton's private email server? Not really. I care that Chelsea Manning rots in jail while Edward Snowden lives in exile for having the knowledge and courage to make sure their stories were told, Snowden in an admittedly much more nuanced, careful, and thought-out way than Manning (or HRC, for that matter).

ME AGAIN: If Clinton promises to pardon Snowden and Manning, I will vote for her.

Let's be clear here. According to Comey today, HRC was not under oath when she spoke to the FBI. Therefore she could not commit a felony by telling a lie. The man heading the investigation, namely Comey, was not even in the room. She was not asked about her testimony before Congress where she was under oath and her testimony before the FBI contradicts things she said before Congress.

This whole episode with the FBI is a sham, pure and simple.

Shouldn't the needless deaths of two more innocent black men being gunned down by police make us shut up about the innocent white woman being burned at the stake for a few emails?

This country needs priorities. We need to stop burning the witch and start healing what divides us.

"Too many African American families are mourning. Too many young black men and women have been taken from us."

--Hillary Clinton, July 7, 2016

"America woke up to yet another tragedy of a life cut down too soon. Black Lives Matter. #‎PhilandoCastile"

--Hillary Clinton, July 7, 2016

"The death of Alton Sterling is a tragedy, and my prayers are with his family, including his five children. From Staten Island to Baltimore, Ferguson to Baton Rouge, too many African American families mourn the loss of a loved one from a police-involved incident. Something is profoundly wrong when so many Americans have reason to believe that our country doesn’t consider them as precious as others because of the color of their skin.

"I am glad the Department of Justice has agreed to a full and thorough review of this shooting. Incidents like this one have undermined the trust between police departments and the communities they serve. We need to rebuild that trust. We need to ensure justice is served. That begins with common sense reforms like ending racial profiling, providing better training on de-escalation and implicit bias, and supporting municipalities that refer the investigation and prosecution of police-involved deaths to independent bodies. All over America, there are police officers demonstrating how to protect the public without resorting to unnecessary force. We need to learn from and build on those examples.

"Progress is possible if we stand together and never waver in our fight to secure the future that every American deserves."

--Hillary Clinton, July 6, 2016

Any reasonable person knows this was a witch hunt all along.  Still, I don't think we should dismiss how well Trump's campaign could play it up now that it's at the top of the news cycle again.  Although it's laughably pot-calling-the-kettle-black for Trump to question anyone else's trustworthiness, his campaign is going to hammer this message for the next several weeks.  With these idiot Republicans in Congress referring the case of whether Hillary lied under oath when speaking to the Benghazi panel to the FBI  AND with today's news that the State Department is going to reopen their  investigation into Hillary's emails, this story's going to be around all summer long.  And now, with a significant sum raised in the past month, Trump has the funds to air these spots beyond YouTube and Facebook.  It's easy to stay in our liberal bubbles and presume this kind of campaign will have no impact, but I think that kind of complacency is dangerous...

People will continue to believe what they previously believed. No one's mind will be changed. But without attaining a majority of either women or minorities, Donald Trump will lose the general election.

If, that is, he actually remains in the race until November...

Bernie Sanders Expected To Endorse Hillary Clinton On Tuesday
NPR | July 7, 2016

Clinton vs. Trump: The Path to Victory

Bernie Sanders is expected to endorse Hillary Clinton on Tuesday at an event in New Hampshire, a Democratic source with knowledge of discussions between the two campaigns tell NPR's Tamara Keith.

Clinton secured enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination just over a month ago, but Sanders has stayed in the campaign — though he kept a lower profile.

Vice President Biden told NPR last week that he was confident Sanders would endorse Clinton, but at that time Sanders said he wasn't quite ready.

The candidate was swayed, two sources say, after Clinton adopted ideas from Sanders' college tuition plan — namely announcing a proposal to make public colleges and universities free for families with annual incomes up to $125,000. "

I know I'm going to be pulling my hair out about this for the foreseeable future, but words have meaning and they cannot be made to mean what you want them to for whatever agenda you have.  To lie means to deliberately tell a falsehood.  To assert something you think is true but turns out to be wrong is to be mistaken, not lying.  Secretary Clinton was mistaken that none of the emails contained information (marked) classified.  There is no evidence anywhere that she knew they did and deliberately made false statements about it.

If she isn't going to speak to it, I hope one of her best surrogates makes a strong statement about it.  (And I don't mean Bill.)

Donald Trump is a slimy nincompoop who doesn't deserve to win anything. I have no clue what my comment about Comey's revelation that her servers were less secure than a free gmail account have anything to do with him.

"Bernie Sanders is expected to endorse Hillary Clinton on Tuesday at an event in New Hampshire,"

I hope NH is the location for such an event.  Bernie's influence is strongest in New England, and he can have an impact on both the NH senate race as well as the presidential.

The June jobs report is in, and the economy added 287k jobs.  This should bode well for Clinton.

THAT IS NOT THE REAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE (OTHERWISE KNOWN AS U-9). THE REAL RATE IS OVER 9.8% AND CONSIDERING HOW MANY PEOPLE STOP LOOKING FOR WORK MONTH OVER MONTH DUE TO LACK OF OPPORTUNITY OR QUALIFICATION, THIS "ADDITION" IS A LIE AND FALSEHOOD CREATED BY THE LABOR DEPT.

I believe you mean U-6 rather than U-9.  It is reasonable to look at either rate, and both have have dropped dramatically since Obama took office.  If you mention the current U-6 rate of 9.8, it is only fair to note that it was 14.2 when Obama took office.

Of course her servers were less secure. Big deal.

I run a private email server that is also less secure than Gmail, because I don't have two factor authentication or a round-the-clock security team checking monitoring all traffic and immediately patching every subsystem.

You know who else doesn't? The State department. Which is why we know the system she was "supposed" to be using got hacked.

Gmail is one of the most secure systems in the world, because the private data of many millions of people (and billions of dollars) depend on it. That doesn't mean others aren't secure enough.

If you want to keep this ridiculous line going, come at me. I resent right-wingers abusing their lack of IT knowledge to score cheap points.
