Thanks! I missed it with all those comedy/drama/mini-series/film/series/regular/series/movie categories.

Actually, (and feel free to correct me) I don't see anything for The Butler.

I think Tom Hanks's chances of getting a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for 'Saving Mr. Banks' are getting slimmer.

THE BUTLER was completely shut out. I don't have a problem with that at all. With these nominations and last year's SAG nods, SAVING MR. BANKS is in a little bit of trouble. I'm pretty much elated that AMERICAN HUSTLE is doing so well in the circuit, let's hope that David O'Russell and the cast continue to pick up steam.

I think The Butler was always a SAG movie because every SAG member was in that movie.

Of course the Comedy/Musical category was way more interesting than the Drama category. Good year.

And HOT DAMN somebody finally nominated Greta Gerwig for Frances Ha and therefore I cannot hate their film selections.

But it is hard to decipher who was 'snubbed' when the Globes having clearly been the last-ditch effort nominations for many movies and performances. Winslet and Elba have no shots at other nominations. But I can't help but think of that unnamed HFPA member who had that cynical comment about James Gandolfini getting a possible Globe nod and him saying, 'Well, he's not going to be there'.

I said it before and I'll say it again: the lack of recognition for the electric scores but sticking with the string scores this year is one of the most boring awards developments. For some reason I thought there was a breakthrough when Trent Reznor's scores for Fincher won stuff.

EDIT: Also The Wind Rises was weirdly ineligible for animated film but is in for Foreign. **shrugs** Updated On: 12/12/13 at 11:38 AM

It just occurred to me that "The Monuments Men" is being released after the deadline for Academy voting.

Yeah, they bumped MONUMENTS MEN after Clooney made a statement about it not really being an awards-contender type film. I guess people expected it to be, based on its creative team and cast.

They also bumped FOXCATCHER all the way to later next year, which I was beyond excited to see this year. The trailer (is it a trailer?) that was released made me even more anxious to see it! Steve Carrell is unrecognizable. Updated On: 1/3/14 at 11:55 AM

According to this source, there is a chance that Oscar voters will snub Meryl Streep for Amy Adams.

"I'm so sick of that bitch Streep getting nominated for everything. I bet they'd nominate her for homemade porn."

Back off, meany. It's not her fault she's getting all these nominations. Have you seen her performance? She's the engine that drives the whole picture. The reason she's so often nominated for awards is that she's a great actor, most often chooses her projects wisely and then rises to the occasion in a full out way. What about all of that annoys you?

That having been said, I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed of Amy Adams were to slip in ahead of Streep. Overall, Hustle has a lot more traction than A:OC and Adams is terrific in it.

It seems that 'Dallas Buyers Club' was not yet released in the U.K. because it was not nominated at the BAFTAs. Amy Adams and Meryl Streep are still neck-to-neck for the fifth nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars. Adams got a nomination over Streep at these awards.

As far as I have read, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB was very much eligible and just didn't get any mentions. I don't have an issue with that whatsoever, I thought it was only slightly better than a Lifetime Movie of the Week.
I'm so excited to see so much support for AMERICAN HUSTLE, though I wish HER had gotten more mentions, especially for Scarlett Johansson's performance. I'm still baffled that they considered GRAVITY a British Film but not 12 YEARS A SLAVE. So glad Amy Adams got in, AMERICAN HUSTLE is her movie.

^ I think your right. This source says that although 'Dallas Buyers Club' does not open till February, films that debuted before the BAFTAs were eligible. Voters did see the film.

Could simply be that Dallas Buyer's Club was either not seen enough despite being eligible ala American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street in the early critics awards OR it's just like a Crash where it's just most popular with Hollywood people. I think DBC placement in WGA was just filler (as some many things were ineligible by the WGA) and PGA was just one of those lamenting, 'We used to make those movies'.

I see Streep and Redford in most trouble. Neither are really campaigning and both films seem so deflated at this point. I think preferential ballot favors Leo, he'll be a lot of people's #1, and American Hustle is looking like a top player with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave so I think Cooper, Lawrence, and Adams are in for their categories.

Sadly, I think Adele Exarchopoulos has no shot after the BAFTAs. Emmanuelle Riva did not get a Globe or SAG but she won the BAFTA her year which showed she was a threat last year. Despite tying Blanchett with the LA Film Critics and historically getting the Palme d'or for her performance, I think she's pushed out because of strength in American competition.

I think the Leading Actor and Actress fields are crowded while the supporting can get a lot of filler. Wouldn't shock me if a Sally Hawkins or even a Sarah Paulson got a filler nomination spot a la Jackie Weaver.

I saw a website claiming Amy Adams would be placed in supporting actress for AMERICAN HUSTLE. I know the Tonys have a committee making these decisions, does the Oscars have something similar? Regardless, she should be in leading and without a doubt should be nominated.

(sorry if this is obvious/already answered)

No, actors are not "placed" in categories for Oscars. That's the hubris of the public relations machines who campaign heavily with those "For Your Consideration" ads, where they merely SUGGEST to Academy voters where the actor should be placed.

The voting ballots have five blank lines on it for each of the four acting categories. You can write down any eligible name you want on any line.

Often the "suggestion" for a category works, but sometimes it does not. It has backfired on actors who didn't get enough votes in either category, but were considered shoo-ins for a nomination, because the votes split between leading and supporting categories.

It's also happened where an actor was nominated in a different category. For example, Susan Sarandon was promoted in the Supporting Actress category for "Atlantic City." All of the ads said it. But she was nominated for Leading Actress instead, because that's where the majority of the Academy voters felt she belonged (and she scored enough votes to get the nom).

Directors Guild nominations announced today ...

Alfonso Cuaron - Gravity
Paul Greengrass - Captain Phillips
Steve McQueen - 12 Years a Slave
David O. Russell - American Hustle
Martin Scorsese - The Wolf of Wall Street

DGA Awards often mirror the Oscar nominations (and wins), but it's not foolproof.

Adams is being submitted in Lead and that has never changed. Besides, her and Lawrence would cancel each other out and really, Amy should not just be relegated to supporting her whole career.

http://www.awardsdaily.com/FYC/gallery/2013-14/photo.php?id=3200

As for the DGAs, my money is on Greengrass as the odd man out. Sony can't juggle 2 top contenders at once in American Hustle and Captain Phillips and it's clear which film is getting more nominations. Coens/Jonze/Payne for that last spot. Scorsese is also vulnerable but the preferential ballot in the directors branch will also have him #1 on many ballots too.

Strummergirl, if Sally Hawkins or Sarah Paulson got in I don't think they'd be "filler nominations," I think in a perfect year they'd both be recognized for what was impeccable work from both of them. I thought Jackie Weaver was a filler nomination but every time I watch SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK again (which has been about 8-10 times...don't judge, I just really like it), I become more and more enamored by her quite subtle but incredibly important work in the movie. Hawkins has been unfortunately passed over Blanchett's performance, but I think Blanchett wouldn't come off as good if Hawkins wasn't there as her foil. Similarly, in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, it's Paulson's character--more than Fassbender's--that I find the scariest and most complex, she is just as good as Ejiofor, Fassbender, and Nyong'o.
Oh, and Amy Adams is in no way supporting and the studio has never had an intention of campaigning her as such. From the time the movie was announced, it was clearly stated she was the lead of the movie along with Christian Bale. Right now, I say she manages to get in over Meryl Streep who keeps losing buzz by the second.

I actually love those 2 performances but I find the category extraordinarily weak in the precursors that I am hoping for those nominations rather than a Julia Roberts type or nomination.

ahh very interesting, thanks Best12bars for the informative reply! Both the leading actor and actress races are so tight, it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top. I'm not sure how the nominators choose when so many of the performances are worthy.

Perhaps it's because I think she has zero talent, but I'd be ELATED if Oprah didn't get an Oscar nomination. (Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.) She might be rich, but what does that mean? (OK, a lot, but...)

I'm, as always, excited about the nominations for the Oscars next week. I think they'll be more predictable than last year, but there's nothing I like more than meaningless awards given between apples and oranges.
