Not getting all the hate for Dallas Buyers Club, I enjoyed the movie a lot and critics seem to agree. It's not perfect but I thought the performances by Matthew and Jared were fantastic.
I have to say I enjoyed it far more than the over written American Hustle and the enjoyable but misguided Wolf of Wall Street.

"According to this source, there is a chance that Oscar voters will snub Meryl Streep for Amy Adams. "
That's not a snub. It would simply mean that they had actually seen both of those performances and made the obvious choice.

I'm not really sure what that even means. Just a few more days until Thursday's announcement, so excited.

Me too!
And Thor is going to announce the nominations. So win-win.

If I'm noticing a lot of "hate" for a movie of late, it's AMERICAN HUSTLE. It seems to be pretty polarizing, and lot of people are calling it overrated. I couldn't disagree more.
And as far as Streep vs. Adams goes, I do think Streep deserves the nomination over Adams. But my gut tells me Adams will get it.
I'm also shocked at how quickly Robert Redford lost momentum in the Best Actor race. At this point, there's a fair chance at him being shut out of the nominations altogether.

I much preferred American Hustle to 12 Years a Slave.
I'd love for Dallas Buyers Club to sneak in with some nods-and a win for Leto, who seems to be their best shot.

12 Years a Slave or Hustle winning doesn't bother me. I like Gravity but its leanness in just being a scene to scene structural film surprised me given Cuaron's filmography. I do think that is one of the film's great strengths in isolation from all its buzz but I think in the age of screeners, it may suffer with voters. I would love it 12YAS won in major categories but I am a little tired of hearing were it to lose be an indictment a la The Color Purple shutout. If its lasting legacy is simply helping get other slave narrative films off the ground, to me that is just as an important legacy as winning Best Picture.
Hustle winning would mean Megan Ellison getting an Oscar and that moment would mean she can flip the bird at Harvey Weinstein after he put out whispering campaigns about her last year. She's important and it would be great if her work at Annapurna got singled out (not to mention she produced The Grandmaster that is short-listed in foreign, although the Hong Kong cut that didn't make it to US shores was much better).
DBC was meh for me. I liked Valle's C.R.A.Z.Y. a good deal but this is nowhere near my favorite McConaughey performance of the last 12 months and probably not going to be my favorite in the following 12 months when True Detective and Insterstellar come into play. I am also surprised Leto is getting such critical love. The character felt under-written.
I'd knock out Thompson or Dench if it meant both Adams or Streep were in. I liked them both a good deal, Streep being a pleasant surprise. Still, Amy is long overdue to be in leading actress category.

A good, educated list, henrik.
I wonder if they'll go a full 10 nominees for Best Pic, though. I'm guessing more like 9 (as in previous years) or 8. We shall see!

Thanks best12, but I'm about to make a last minute change: Exarchapolous! But whose place will she take? I'm gonna have to say, unhappily, Thompson. What crowded fields these are!

I imagine we'll see a few surprises (either in or out) on the lists. Someone will be "very lucky" and someone will be "robbed!"
Let the ranting begin! ... well, in an hour or so.

I think Robbie will be the big surprise (I'm surprised there hasn't been more buzz about her, she's amazing in the movie!) I'm also considering replacing Hanks with Isaac or Jordan - oh what the hell I'm going in!
p.s. I put both Isaac and Jordan in, for Hanks and Bale. This hurt a lot as I think Christian Bale's performance in American Hustle is the best thing he's ever done in his career, and the heart of the movie. Count him, in my current imagination, as one of the "robbed!"

I think Oscar Isaac may be the big surprise.
Leading Actor is the toughest category this year though so we'll see......
Personally I'm hoping Leo sneaks in.

Oh my God, I forgot Leo! This is just impossible. But in a field where Redford, in his most impressive role in years (and one in which he's won the NY Film Critics award) may be shut out, its anyone's guess what will happen.
In all seriousness, the "snub" thing is very weird and has never, for me, been persuasive. Its not a snub to not be nominated when there is such a broad field of possible nominees of stature and so few slots.

#1202013 Awards Season Thread
Posted: 1/16/14 at 9:16amRedford made a ton of sense as somebody who wouldn't make it. He's above the Oscar campaigning whereas DiCaprio and Dern worked their butts off this awards season (I think Bale did not even bother but here we are), the film is from a small distribution company, and after Gravity, it is probably a film that is most hurt by being seen on screeners.

Posted: 1/16/14 at 10:49pmI thought the Oscar for Best Actor was anybody's game, but now I think Matthew McConaughey is starting to become the front-runner after winning at both the Golden Globes and the Broadcast Film Critics' Awards. If he wins Saturday at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards, then he's got this in the bag.

So with the SAG Awards last night, I feel a little more confident that "12 Years a Slave" has real competition in the Best Picture category. I also think Lupita will win over Jennifer Lawrence.
SAG Winners:
Best Ensemble: American Hustle
Actor - Matthew McConaughey
Acress - Cate Blanchett
Sup. Actor - Jared Leto
Sup. Actress - Lupita Nyong'o
Actually those are my pics for the Oscars. (Picture, and the acting awards). Best Director - Cuaron for Gravity. Adapted Screenplay - 12 Years a Slave. Original Screenplay - American Hustle.

I don't see the actor race as over. Because DBC was passed over by the BAFTA Awards, we will never see Leo and McConaughey head to head until Oscar night. I also think it strongly mirrors the 2002-2003 Actor race when everybody thought Nicholson vs. DDL until Adrien Brody won for the singular, central role in an 'important film'. So I think Ejiofor and DiCaprio are still possibilities. I don't see McConaughey as undeniable and his category is the toughest. Leo was hurt with the late screenings of Wolf. They were the last film scene and they didn't send out screeners so I don't think him not getting in at SAG speaks to them not liking the performance because the reactions he got both at the Globes and BFCAs show passion behind him.
I definitely see Lupita as a winner but I also think if Hustle wins at stuff like PGA or even the BAFTAs (it was the only precursor that had everybody in Hustle in the four categories but Gravity and 12YAS have strong UK ties), I think it needs a few other places to win. I don't think the Oscars would be that comfortable with just awarding it picture. I still think DOR is 3rd in director so Original Screenplay or Supporting Actress are the only major categories where it can conceivably win.
