I caught Parasite last night, and wow, that was brilliant. There was not one second that I was not captivated and enthralled by. Incredible performances, spot-on direction, beautifully shot - don't miss this one.
I moved some things around and saw Doctor Sleep tonight instead of Jojo Rabbit. I think that I liked it for the most part, but I feel like it lacked a lot of what made The Shining so phenomenal. The new characters - Rose the Hat and comrades - didn't do a lot for me, despite the performances being mostly fine. I found myself longing for that tension and uneasiness that builds all the way through The Shining. Ewan is serviceable but nothing to write home about. The callbacks to the original were fun, and definitely needed to be there, but they felt forced and out of place. I spent the first hour and forty-five minutes wondering when they would finally and inevitably make it to the Overlook, and when they did, it was all crammed into a third act that was rushed and lost. It didn't spook me at all, which I was hoping for a great deal. Every time I felt as though something was starting to work, something else would come up and cause it to fall flat - such as the scene where Dan is at the Overlook bar being served by Jack. It started off strong, but lost me when Dan smacked the drink off the bar screaming something to the effect of "I won't do it!". How predictable and unexciting, and not one of Ewan's stronger acting moments in the film. For a follow-up to my favorite movie of all time, I was hoping for more.
