Oh wow I didn't even know that part, Besty! I tend to like older men, but Dylan McDermott just brings it to a new level altogether, I never thought I'd be turned on by a man who cries while/after jacking off...that day came to an end after that pilot.
Dylan McDermott is the only person who seems to have any talent. This show is horrible, on every conceivably level. Bernard Herrmann's VERTIGO wasn't the only thing sampled. Alan Silvestri's WHAT LIES BENEATH (itself a major Herrmann rip-off) was used, as well as Herrmann's music from the film TWISTED NERVE. As was evident in the horrible NIP/TUCK (I've never seen even a second of GLEE, because the commercials for it kind of make me sick), Ryan Murphy seems to confuse sex and profanity with a plot. He is simply incapable of telling a story with intelligence. I N C A P A B L E
Proof of this can be found by reading this thread, which is more interested in Dylan McDermott's ass and his masturbating, than the narrative of the show.
Welcome to television in the 21st century.
Why I cherish my Blus and DVDS so. I do like PERSON OF INTEREST, however.
I enjoyed the show alot, that does not mean it is well written. As with most TV nowadays. It is written for the ADD generation by people with ADD. There is little attention paid to continuity and consistency and more attention paid to bells, whistles and shocks. For instance, Desperate Housewives had a stellar first season and then turned into a steaming pile of crap. It seems like series writers just lose momentum so quickly.
I really don't think this show will ever live up to its hype and potential. I dont think they will satisfyingly deliver on all the promise, but I hope they do.The quality of writing and commitment to character arch just won't be there with Murphy. I will watch though. The calibre of talent involved keeps me interested.
I get watching a lousy show, because you find the cast talented, but other than McDermott, I find this cast weak. I never did understand Jessica Lange's success.
I think Lange is great with good material and a good directory. Yes, she has two Oscars but I've always found her performances pretty similar and the way she uses her body (mainly hands and arms) carbon copied in each film she does. Like all actors, she has highs and lows.
With this show it appears she is embracing the possible shift into camp that is often inevitable with even great actresses of a certain age. I think she is aware it is archetypal camp and not high art. However, she is still an exceptional actress with skill to elevate even campy material. She works in service of the script. She is alternately bitchy, creepy, campy, erotic-and that takes skill to make it effortless. Plus, this is an A-list gig with the hottest people in TV right now.
I've always like Connie. I think she is an exceptional actress.
As for Frances-she is a virtuoso. She can do no wrong in my book.
Denis is a fantastic actor as well.
I think this show has an A-list cast, acting chops wise.
I've found Lange, camp, since KING KONG. I'm just not feeling this show.
JohnBoy2, I mainly agree with you (finally someone who agrees with me re Jessica Lange! I feel it's blasphemy to even try to say anything negative about her around this board) but it's interesting you brought up PERSON OF INTEREST since I thought that had the opposite problem of AMERICAN HORROR STORY, it's SO boring and safe! I just watched the pilot because of my love for Michael Emerson and while he's great the show itself was dull as can be, not bad, just dull as most--or all--CBS shows go.
I agree with Bettyboy that the cast is one thing the show has going for it. Save for Lange whom I think has never known the meaning of subtlety, the cast is pretty great IMO, Frances Conroy is such a great actress (though I'm worried she was listed as a guest star on the pilot whereas everyone else was listed as a series regular) and Connie Britton is magnetic and likable. Dennis O'Hare is also pretty amazing. The problem with the show for me is the writing, it's funny how much audiences love Ryan Murphy when he is soooo bad! I still want my money back for RUNNING WITH SCISSORS

I like the cast, and I'm curious enough to find out what the heck's going on to tune in over the next few weeks at least.
Don't think it's been mentioned yet that Violet is played by Taissa Farmiga, Vera Farmiga's younger sister. (I'm looking forward to seeing Higher Ground in which the Farmiga sisters play the same character at different ages.)
I don't think we're supposed to know who/what Rubber Man is yet. Riley Schmidt is the actor in the suit. That's how he's credited: "Rubber Man."
Speaking of credits, I was glad to see what that evil snarly-nailed, shark-teethed monster-baby-freaky-a$$ed thing in the basement is called: "Infantata" (portrayed by Ben Woolf). Now I know what to call it. (But what the hell IS it?)
Here's a link to an article/interview with Connie Britton, where she answers some questions about the show. So be forewarned. It goes into more than what was just seen in the premiere, like what's planned for the two-part Halloween special.

I also loved RUBICON, and everybody claimed that show was too slow and dull. I guess that's what I like.
I tried Person of Interest because of the actors -- and it was so boring! Nothing happened in the first two episodes! I've seen other sites were people are just imagining Michael Emerson's character as a latter day Ben Linus in order to keep interest in the show.
Am. Horror Story wasn't the worst show I've ever sat through by any stretch of the imagination. Honestly, if I can get through a show and not be bored at all I'll give it another try. I was not bored in the least by this.
I think Rubber Man being the boy is too obvious. I'm leaning more towards it being Dylan Mcdermott somehow...maybe possessed.

Possessed by one of the dead gays, perhaps?
"Possessed by one of the dead gays, perhaps?"
Namo-I think you are on to something. That would allow for some man on man action later in the series. Im sure Murphy would be all about that. You know Murphy had a hand in all the male nudity in episode one-which he directed.
Oh, I just love me some hot possessed man!
What I think is happening with Rubber Suit is that Ben (or whoever will wear it later) is somehow possessed to put on the suit. Some of the promo material on YouTube shows a pregnant woman wearing the suit as well. It's desire epitomized and I will not be surprised if all three family members don it by the end of the season.
What I think is happening with the whole series is that we're getting an exaggerated view of the family's relationship from very limited perspectives. The daughter sees one thing, Ben sees another thing, and Vivien sees something completely different. All these cross-cuts and editing lines are shifts in perspective and wrinkles in memory. I didn't see a giant scar on Ben's arm from being stabbed by his wife, but that didn't stop Vivien from remembering her discovery of Ben's infidelity as a violent attack against him. I won't even go into my ghost, demi-ghost, and hallucination theories yet.

We in danger, viewers.
Can I keep this rubber suit?
Phyllis, now you're going to make Ryan Murphy re-write the second half of the season. So help me, if a pottery wheel is spun by any of the three leads, I'm blaming you.
II was flipping through the TV Guide and saw last week's episode was on. I watched it and I LOVEDDD it. It was awesomeee. Cannot wait for tomorrow night's episode.
I finally watched the pilot last night. I have to preface that in general I am NOT a horror fan, so I am not its suited audience. I liked some parts of it, but some were just way too out there for me. I will watch for a couple more episodes but I dunno if this will last on my season pass list.
I do like the cast so that might help.
When is it on? I saw Dylan McDermott on one of the late night talk shows last night, and looked through my Guide for the next week and couldn't find it.
Stock, it's Wednesdays at 10:00 on FX, so episode 2 airs tonight.
You can definitely catch up; none of us knows what's going on yet, I promise you!
FYI, it has strong language and nudity, so probably not something you want to watch with your son.
Thanks Reg. I'll have to DVR it since it's on at the same time as Revenge.
