Was it Canada? Or was that something else?
It started out ending in Ohio.
When the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 (part of the Compromise of 1850) stated that Southern Planters had the right to come to North to recapture freeing slaves, it was "extended" out to Canada.
How did Americans first get involved in the conflict in Vietnam?

I know this. Grrrrr. Besides the idea of "containment" and wanting to stop the spread of communism. That is the basic idea of why we were first in Vietnam. Is that what you mean? North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam. N Vietnam was communist so we wanted to stop them.
A VERY GOOD Answer--but here's WHAT I was getting at:
JFK sent some Military Advisors to Vietnam.
The First President to send Actual Troops was LBJ.
What was "Habeous Corpus"? Which President started it?

No clue on this one.
"Habeous Corpus" is Latin for "Give Me The Body".
When Lincoln was President, he gave himself the right to seize ANYBODY he wanted--any time, any day, etc. and HURL THEM IN JAIL. (It was one way to weed out Potential Southern Sympathizers.)
These poor characters could rot in Jail for WEEKS.
This action was TOTALY AGAINST The Bill of Rights (right to a Speedy Trial, etc.), but hey, that's our Lincoln!

Got it. I will have to remember that. Got another question, please?
Sure. What famous Quote did Gerald Ford make during his Inaguration Address?
Broadway Legend Joined: 1/3/05
Was it about his pardon to Nixon, or was that later?
His pardon was AFTER he took Office.
During his Inaguration Address, he stated--"I'm not a Lincoln. Just a Ford."

Oh. Lol. That's funny. I've never heard that.
Yeah. Ford was a very witty guy, believe it or not.

Gosh I'm so tired. Just a couple of more questions, then I HAVE to go to bed. BTW, M_E, you are my hero.
EDIT: I actually have to go now. But thanks for everything.
***shucks***
What Secretary of State was crucial in ending a conflict in the Middle East?
... I'm back "on-line", should anyone care to review some more...
I would love to review more, if you are still on-line, M_E.
...I'm here.
Which Secretary of State was responsible for ending a major conflict in the Middle East?
Umm no idea... yikes. I should know this.
Does anyone want to give me the Reader's Digest version of the Cold War? I would be eternally grateful.. just like who is with who and why?
Hmm, Secretary of State? I have no idea. I know about Carter and the Camp David Accords, though.
Henry Kissinger (Nixon Administration) spear-headed Peace in the Middle East--I believe it was 1973.

Thanks M_E. Got another question for us?
Sure.
Who used to actualy BANG HIS SHOE ON THE TABLE to get Attention during U.N. Meetings?
CYP~ I need that too!!
I know it involved Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Russia, and other countries and control of communism (containment). The Truman Doctrine, as well as the Eisenhower Doctrine were both containment policies. The Cuban Missile Crisis and Bay of Pigs incident were parts of it, as were the U-2 incident and Sputnik. Umm, let's see. The Korean War involved us, North and South Korea...who else?? (Yikes!) Umm, there was no treaty ending the Korean war, only an armistice in 1953. The Soviets put up the Berlin Wall, and the US had to airlift supplies. The two Russian premiers during the Cold War were Nikita Kruschev and Mikhael Gorbachev.
Sorry, this is all out of order, and there is a lot more, but that's all I can think of right now.
M_E~ No idea!
Yep--Elphie--that's a GOOD Summation--I think the website I provided gives an excellent overview as well.
So, is somebody going to take a crack at my "banging the shoe" Question?
