Posted: 5/3/05 at 10:17pmWhy isn't Washington thought of as the first "War Hero"...I know he didn't do very well as a general, but he was still very important to the revolution, and became a very famous man because of his contributions...im confused...

I agree its a technical point, Jwei.
The first man to CAMPAIGN as a "War Hero" and use THAT as his PRIMARY Qualification for being President was Andrew Jackson.
What was Watergate?

Nixon had CREEP (Committee to re-elect the President) and it broke into the Watergate hotel to get classified documents from someone's shrink (who's was it?) And nixon resigned before he was impeached. He didn't need to worry, he would have been reelected anyway, without breaking into the Democratic Convention (CREEP did that too, right?)

Sorta Kinda, Jwei.
They were also bugging the Democratic Convention Headquarters at Watergate.
What got Nixon in hot water is that when he was first confronted with this fact, he lied and said he didn't know anything about it--which he did.
When Nixon resigned as President and Gerald Ford took over, what is the FIRST thing Ford did?

Didn't Ford pardon Nixon first thing or something?
Alix~ Is that the Morrill land grant thing? That gave money and land for colleges and universities, I think. Or are you talking about something else....

The VERY first thing when Ford took office was grant Nixon TOTAL ABSTINENCE from ANY AND ALL CRIMES he MAY HAVE committed.
Pretty strong language!
The Merrill Act created "land-grant" Colleges throughout the nation.

... and Kentucky and Missouri. And you're ABSOLUTELY Right: Delaware. For some reason, people tend to forget that Delaware was a slave state.
In 1862, Lincoln signed a bill which ended slavery in D.C.
