Remember, the Republican Party was formed NOT to end Slavery--but TO PREVENT ANY FUTURE EXPANSION. Unfortunately, many of The Southeners viewed ALL Notheners as "Dirty Abolotionists". (spelling?)

Okay. One more root cause of The Civil War.
6. The North liked Tarrifs because they made it harder for the Europeans to compete with them--the South disliked Tarrifs because they made the cost of their raw materials rise.

7. The North relied FAR MORE on Railway Transportation--I believe by 1861, there were THREE TIMES as many rail laid in the North than in the South.
What was the original intent of the British Crown for the Colony of Georgia?
#457re: AP American History
Posted: 5/5/05 at 8:59pmNo sure if this was the Crown's intent, but James Oglethorpe wanted it to be a Utopia and a place for debtors to find freedom.

... not Quite.
The Crown wanted to use it as a "Penal Colony"--a "Jail" to send all their petty thieves (including Debtors--which was a Crime in the U.K.)

to add to civil war causes, last year (us history is a two year course in my school) that was the essay on the final - the question was was war inevitable. anyway, this might have been encompassed in what you said M_E but most people said that is was because of the different climates and geographical regions that separated the north and the south so much socially and economically, leading to political separation as well...and then all the details that you were talking about.
question: for the conclusion, my teacher always tells us never to just summerize your essay in the conclusion but to try to add a little twist or extra point and the princeton review book says something a little different. what have your teachers told you about writing the conclusion? i know it's the least important part of the essay but just wondering.

What was one of the key reasons as to why James Buchannan was nominated by the Democrats for President in 1856?
#465re: AP American History
Posted: 5/5/05 at 9:21pmBecause he was out of the country during the whole Bleeding Kansas thing and was therefore untainted by it.

Close. The Kansas and Nebraska Act--passed in 1854--proved to be a HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL Act.
Many politicans' careers were ruined by their stance on it.
Since he was serving as Ambassador to the U.K. when the Act was passed--he took no stance on it--therefore he was "safe".

The Volstead Act was passed by Congress simply to enforce this Amendment.
