1) The first A bomb was dropped on HIROSHIMA.
2) NIXON won the POPULAR vote in the 1960 Election--but LOST in the Electoral College.
3) Kennedy "won" the TV Presidential Debates because a) he used makeup--which Nixon REFUSED to do; and b) he was coached by TV professionals on how to talk and act in front of a TV Camera. Nixon just "winged" it.
What is meant when it is said FDR had to "pack" the Supreme Court? WHY did he have to "pack" it?
#204re: AP American History
Posted: 5/2/05 at 10:50pmDidn't he want to make it so there were 15 justices? Was it because people kept vetoing his New Deal legislation and he wanted more people on "his side" in the courts?

Posted: 5/2/05 at 10:51pmhe wanted to put in a new judge for every judge over 70(?) that didn't retire and increase the number of judges b/c they were declaring his new deal programs unconstitutional and he wanted support and a new court but congress stopped him

Posted: 5/2/05 at 10:51pmfdr would pack the supreme court because of his "Judiciary Age Act" which said for every justice over 70, he would appoint a new one, until the supreme court justice number got to 15.

You just about have it!!!
When you're appointed a Supreme Court Justice for life--or until you retire, its literaly YOUR DECISION.
The "old foggies" on the Supreme Court began declaring legislation after legislation of FDR's "New Deal" package unconstitutional.
Since FDR couldn't "fire" the Justices, he just arbitrarily raised the amount of Justices on the Court--and made sure the new slots were all filled with his associates that would be more "friendly" to his New Deal legislation.
Who was the only President to serve two NONCONSECUTIVE terms in Office?

Grover Cleveland was President from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897.
After James Garfield was shot and spent a few months where they attempted to locate the bullet and dislodge it, who "ran" the Country?

I think you're referring to Edith Wilson when Woodrow Wilson was convalescing from his stroke--which, by the way, has NEVER been proven.
Anyway, when Garfield lay dying, the Country was run by... no one. It was the Summer, Congress wasn't in Session, and there really wasn't a whole lot to do.
Unlike today, when the Constution states the Vice-President shall Act as President if the President is ILL, there was no such language in the Constitution then.
Then Vice-President Chester Alan Arthur was the EXACT OPPOSITE of John Tyler--he followed the Constitution to the LETTER and assumed no Presidential duties until Garfield was declared dead.

Contrary to what you might have seen in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was NOT signed on July 4, 1776.
But that date WAS an important date for the Declaration.
What DID happen on that date?

No clue, but I'll take a stab at it
It was written on july 4th?
on a LATER july 4th, William Lloyd garrison, and immediatist abolitionist burned a copy of the constitution.
<---brain is frying.

Okay. Re: Declaration of Independence--
1) The Continental Congress approved it on July SECOND;
2) It was first read to the people on July FOURTH;
3) It was signed in dribs and drabs by various people over quite a span of time--I believe some Members of Congress didn't sign until September or October.
What Confederate City did the Union put under Siege durig the Civil War?

SORRY, Jwei.
It was Vicksburg--which surrended to General Grant in July of 1863.
When Vicksburg fell, Grant had achieved his goal by "cutting the Confederacy in Two."
Jwei, when are you taking the exam?
