There is a pretty simple solution, if you don't want to look like an absolute asshole, don't wear the shirts. If people want to go around wearing shirts implying they're a giant slut, then whatever, that's how they choose to present themselves. It's not really demeaning if people are choosing the image for themselves.

Do you mean like this one Colleen?

Posted: 1/4/07 at 12:39pmWell it still allows women, and gay men, to demean one another and furthers certain stereotypes.

We have some cute Abercrombie shirts, but none of them are their "Sex Tees".
They either have ABERCROMBIE across the front, or just a cute little moose head. I also have an Ezra Fitch button down that's really nice. It's so freakin' comfortable.

"Well it still allows women, and gay men, to demean one another and furthers certain stereotypes."
And now I would really like to try to understand what you are saying here. How does a gay man buying a t-shirt and wearing it allow gay men to "demean one another?"

Agreed. Let people buy what they want. If you feel it's demeaning, don't wear them, and don't date people who wear them. But it really sounds to me like you're imposing your own values and judgments on someone else's tastes in clothing (or sense of humor). I mean seriously...who cares?

eighty per cent of the people in the room that we negotiated with were men, and the ones that were women
they have trannies on the board?

Posted: 1/4/07 at 1:21pmYeah, I seriously don't care about this one. You always have the option of not wearing the damn shirts.

Exactly.
And it's not as if wearing them will garner any positive attention for yourself.
If was I walking down the street and saw some toolbox wearing that shirt, I wouldn't think "Ha, that's funny!" or even "Damn, I'd like to be the one for him." I would think "Jesus, look at that poor delusional walking-Real-World-bait...such a pity."

Posted: 1/4/07 at 2:37pmThe point is that the people who wear those t-shirts know exactly what kind of people they're attracting by wearing them...which is the goal.

I had two t-shirts made up:
One says: Wake Up, I need to use your mouth
The second one says: Not Abercrombie's Bitch
I think I covered both bases pretty well.

Posted: 1/4/07 at 4:26pmI automatically judge anyone who wears shirts like that as being ridiculous and obnoxious...but maybe I'm just a bitch.

Posted: 1/4/07 at 5:03pmi'm glad to know that everyone on this board is intelligent to know that thiese shirts are ridiiculous. But don't forget, there are people out there who are not as smart as we are. Especially teenage girls and college students, the target audience of this corporation. They are very impressionable, and they would take these shirts seriously. one of Abercrombie's defenses is that they think that the people who wear these shirts are being "ironic" but I'm sure that's rarely the case. It's not a positive thing for anyone, except the corporations.

So we legislate for the idiots?
College women are mature enough to take whatever consequences come with wearing the apparel. I guarantee you they're doing much worse on Friday nights than wearing risque t-shirts.
And parents of high school students are the ones who get to decide what their child may leave the house wearing. They are responsible for instilling morality in their children, not a clothing corporation. Those shirts would violate dress code at most high schools anyway.

But if you're the right age and the right look, then you can pull it off.
Or maybe that's "TAKE it off." Hmmmm....

Posted: 1/4/07 at 5:19pmwhere are these college girls who will open their mouths just because it says to on a shirt? where are the ones who will spread their legs and sing me 2 live crew lyrics just because it says to on a shirt? and finally does anyone believe that there's anyone anywhere who thinks that anyone who's wearing a shirt advertising that they are hung is packing anything over four inches (and that's not after swimming)? i may need to take a road trip to geek's town with my trusty "show us your tits" sign and my digicam if they truly obey whatever they see.
