so often the case, it's fine for people of an older age to joke about sex but younger people are frowned upon for even making jokes.
Aren't the shirts in question jokes themselves?

Yes, they are. I actually think the whole A&F thing is totally and completely played out and can't believe that anybody of any age still wears their crap in 2007, but I have to agree with the fact that the t-shirt lines are meant ironically.
Just like my "Sorry girls, I only sleep with models" t-shirt is meant ironically.

Posted: 1/4/07 at 6:59pmBut man did I have a thing for boys who wore Abercrombie when I was in HS. It was an aphrodisiac for me. Of course, I then went and dated the tattooed freaks instead!

Posted: 1/4/07 at 7:00pmSure. THey are supposed to be jokes. As I've said, I regret making the inappropriate jokes that I did make, and it really was quite irresponsible of me to say what I said. But that's in the past. As of the moment, the T-shirts are supposed to be jokes. Depending on your sense of humor they're not terribly funny, but to each their own.

To each their own??!!!
Your group had them removed from the market because you wanted to make moral judgements about OTHER peoples' sense of style and humor!!!
Oy.

I did too! Micah Hudgens.. damn.. everything he owned was by Abercrombie.
Even his underwear. :)

Posted: 1/4/07 at 7:04pmPeople can think them funny all they want to. That doesn't change the demeaning nature of the product.

A lot of truth is said in jest.
It's true, these shirts aren't meant to be taken 100% seriously, BUT it is still a way to get the underlying message out there.

Posted: 1/4/07 at 7:05pmYes, but in this thread you said "it's fine for people of an older age to joke about sex but younger people are frowned upon for even making jokes." I wasn't talking about your smutty talk of days gone by. I was talking about you pissing and moaning about these shirts which in this thread while that very statement of yours would seem to mean that you should give the shirts your full approval.

See? We don't want to admit it, but we know the boys who wear this stuff are almost automatically hot. The message of the A&F catalogs is that you have to look like that to dress like that.
Thank goodness the message is getting out.
Now, are these guys husband material? Probably not...at least, not yet. But who cares. We're just looking. And laughing. And maybe rolling our eyes.

In California, I knew this 42 year old veterinarian that wore A&F when he wasn't wearing scrubs.
(But he looked 35 and was built. I didn't hold it against him.)

Posted: 1/4/07 at 7:07pmYOU think they're demeaning. Others think they're cocky or funny or whatever. The point is, it's not for YOU to tell them what to think.

Posted: 1/4/07 at 7:08pmMYB - I full agree. Looking is one of the greatest parts of life. When I first met my fiance I would go in there and buy him clothes, so that way I made myself an Abercombie boy!

MYB, I think that's the point geek was trying to make in the first place. It's not for A&F to tell young people how to think.
I am seriously surprised by the overall tone of this thread. You all don't think shirts these are part of a growing problem?

MLE: So, all advertising "tells people what to think?" No one has to buy this stuff if they don't like it. But by the same token, no one should have the right to tell ME to not wear it just because they don't like it.
The real test of freedom is being tolerant of the things you personally don't like, and realizing that other people have different opinions.

"It's not for A&F to tell young people how to think."
Which is why A&F is not required attire. Individuals who don't want to make that statement do not need to purchase those items.
