re: Academy Nominations being announced

I don't see CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY as the type of movie that will be in the running for the Oscars, but who knows.

Evelyn: I agree - 2002 was my favorite year as well. Although I agreed with all the nominations, I would have given the best picture award to THE HOURS over CHICAGO.

C- for Wonka? That is slightly depressing.
But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

And did anyone think a film like Pirates Of The Caribbean would contain a performance worthy of a Best Actor nod?

Does anyone still think it doesn't contain a performance worthy of a Best Actor nod? *raises hand*

re: Academy Nominations being announced

CHARLIE may get Art Direction and Score.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Nobody (except Iris, apparently) has seen the finished product of the new Willy Wonka movie, so this is all far too early to predict.

Apparently, a majority of the Screen Actors Guild felt it worthy of their recognition. But what do they know, they're only working actors, not smart people who teach film to undeserving undergraduates.

While others believe that anyone with a differing opinion should be condemned for it. Or at the very least, belittled and made to feel bad.

Oh, give me a break. I'm entitled to my own opinion of Depp's performance in Pirates of the Caribbean. I wasn't asking who DOES think it was Oscar worthy - as it's clear to me that many people did, and they're entitled to their opinions. I was saying that I don't think it's Oscar worthy.

Don't sweat it. re: Academy Nominations being announced He didn't make me "feel bad." That sort of condescension toward people in academia is something to which most of us are accustomed.

As my entire social circle is comprised of people in academics, I certainly have nothing against them. I was merely referencing anearlier comment of yours - in which I think the condescension is obvious.

Dude, I'm not even a professor. I'm simply studying to be one. Will you just chill out and stop looking for an excuse to be upset that I'm a BWW member?

re: Academy Nominations being announced

And in addition to that, is it possible to slam the Academy for their choices WITHOUT being condescending toward them in some respect? Almost everyone on this thread is expressing contempt for the Academy today. You are just irritated that I exist. Deal with that because I have no plans of leaving this board anytime soon.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I think everyone needs to just keep in mind that the Oscars are just another group of people making their own choices on what they think is the Best of the year. Yeah they are televised and give trophies...and highly publicized and shows the dirty side of politics...but other than that, they are just another group.

How come nobody gets this pissed over what the New York Film Critics Circle chooses or the Los Angeles Film Association or the Independent Spirit Awards?

You're such a wonderfully vindictive man, papa. :) A quote in which I insinuate that the Academy isn't smart isn't anything that many people here find particularly controversial. Slamming the Academy for their choices is fundamentally condescending. Whether it's explicitly stated or not, the message being sent by most people on this thread who are condemning the Academy for "failing" to nominate certain films, performances, etc. (myself included) is that the Academy isn't smart. Bam. I didn't ignore a thing that DGrant said, even though I know he said it exclusively for the purpose of starting an argument which is actually going to stop here.

Evelyn, you used that comment and others today to put upon a superior air about yourself in response to others' opinions. Even though it wasn't aimed at me, I noticed it.

Papa--M$B is a very good film--I highly recommend it. The Aviator is very deserving of its nominations. I am only sad for Hotel Rwanda not getting BP.
