I still think people need to look at one great thing the Academy did this morning.

They nominated Mike Leigh for Best Director for Vera Drake!!! I had no idea that Vera Drake was even in the radar for that category. I'm happy that the Academy was brave enough to reward Mr. Leigh with a nomination.

no, the condescension is attributing intelligence, en masse, to professors. it's not necessarily what you say, but the way you say it and the inherent arrogance that leaves you still unable to see it. yeah, you'll fit right nicely in that ivory tower. and "bam"? who are you? emeril?

"Evelyn, you used that comment and others today to put upon a superior air about yourself in response to others' opinions. Even though it wasn't aimed at me, I noticed it."

The only time today that I recall responding to others' opinions today was with regard to the racism in Pulp Fiction - which is, indeed, a racist film. Just clarifying that as I know you, DGrant and papa are attempting to pull your same old sh*t from the Kristen Chenoweth thread. And you, my friend, aren't particularly respectful of others' opinions. I have numerous PMs that state this.

Oh.... now that's rich! A superior air about one's self? And here I thought that was a prerequisite for joining this board.

I didn't mean that "Charlie..Factory" is gonna get an Oscar nod. I just was saying next years gonna be full of good movies, or so it seems at the moment.

2001 was actually my favorite Oscar year. Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge AND Gosford Park all in the same year.

Evelyn - what are you referring to concerning a Kristin Chenoweth thread?

you hate me, you really hate me

I'm gonna miss me some Peter Jackson this year. Last year was so wonderful whenever he gave his Best Picture speech (which I MISSED the first minute, because the affiliate decided to do an emergency test...GRR...) This is a predictable year.

Again, not happy about "Shark Tale" for Best Animated Picture. Not even happy that all those nominees are computer-generated flicks.

Papa Clint deserved an Oscar nod. Please see MDB before you hear about the plot twist and the film is ruined for you.

In response to someone's earlier question, no, I don't think that Clint Eastwood is deserving of a Best Actor nomination, considering a few other amazing performance this year were left out.

Maybe I'm *totally* out of the loop, but why isn't Fahrenheit 9/11 up for anything? I vaguely remember Moore talking about it being submitted for Best Film instead of Best Documentary. Anyone?

I'm not all that pleased with 70% of the nominations. Oh well, that's what you get with commercialized award shows.

Magic - I guess my question would be, what should Fahrenheit have been nominated for? I didn't see it as outstanding in any way.

It's because you're a republican.

The same way that if there was an anti-Democratic documentary up for best picture, democrats would hate it. It's too political and there's no way that anyone can truly judge the film without getting their own person politics involved.

I do, however, consider VERA DRAKE being nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Director a small victory - it's such a brilliant movie with an urgent, true message and story line. (Because, in case you don't know it, it deals with abortion.)

I don't think that HP3 and SP2 deserved to be nominated at all. I saw them both, and they were just terrible. The HP3 didn't even follow the book at all, and SP2 was just boring. It wasn't exciting... and I already knew exactly what was going to happen, and I'm not a comic fan. They don't really deserve as many nominations as they got... and I think that Passion of the Christ deserved more, at least more than those two movies.

"no, the condescension is attributing intelligence, en masse, to professors."

I'm not a professor nor have I obtained the graduate degree necessary to make me one in any of my fields of interest. Therefore, I'm not in a position to express superiority to individuals who aren't professors. I do, however, think that one has to be of above average intelligence (statistically speaking, and we can debate the validity of that) to obtain a PhD in the humanities. Academics writing about film have more complex insights to offer about it than most performers and I have on public forums. Your mistake is assuming that by claiming that the "smart people" (read: professors) know the most aesthetically and socially-significant films to screen, I was necessarily positioning myself with professors. In fact, I've been an actor as well as a university student. By virtue of that background, I'm able to identify with both academics and actors while also recognizing that whatever position you occupy in society, you can argue that some films that could've legitimately received nominations did not receive them.

Now why is all that I just said so key to this discussion of Oscar nominations? I've forgotten, and of course that's because DGrant unnecessarily took issue with some allusion I made to the fact that even though Kinsey has been largely ignored at awards ceremonies, it will ultimately find its audience in universities - amongst other social milieus.

"yeah, you'll fit right nicely in that ivory tower."

And by this you mean that professors are generally arrogant snots who aren't 'down' with everyone else?

Your above statement is an example of condescension - as is DGrant's earlier generalization that film school students are "undeserving" of the opportunity to attend film school. But for the sake of avoiding further threadjacking (initiated by DGrant), let's continue this via PM if you want. I won't discuss what you or anyone else perceive to be personality flaws - of you, me or anyone else - on an Oscar nomination thread. It was obnoxious of DGrant to turn this thread into a discussion of my character, and it would be obnoxious of me to continue doing the same.

JRB: In response to your PM assertion that I "MUST BE" a huge Spike Lee fan since I didn't particularly enjoy Ray... no.
