I have no problem ignoring all the stupid threads and not posting in them. The issue, which many people have brought up, is that the OT board (and the main board as well at times) is overrun with threads that are repetitive, nonsense, stupid, or all of the above. It is hard to find threads that I enjoy and want to read and participate in because they are buried underneath crap.
Have fun defining what a "serious topic" is...something that will be accepted by the masses.

Every generation grew up like that!
Jane2 - you just don't get it. Remember yourself at that age and what made an impression on you.
Marlene, I must be tired but I just did not understand
"From experience, (I mod on a forum), there tends to be an issue for certain individuals to distinguish from the different boards...and there's always controversy about that. But that may be a totally different story given that I will assume, the demographic of this forum is different. "
It has been a long week.

THAT'S key right there.
The other day I clicked on a stupid sounding thread title and the SAME person who started the thread replied two times (no one else had) to bump it back to the top of the thread. THAT'S what I think of when I read the phrase "stupid and obnoxious."
I'm starting to resent something here. It seems to me that from some of the teenaged points of view here, we older, more mature posters are out of line to want to converse with like minds. We're insulting you because we have some different interests?
I agree Namo!
When posters bump up their own threads repeatedly, sometimes within a few minutes of posting so they stay at the top of the page, I get pissed.

And that's what I think of when I actually venture out and say we need stronger moderation. Or moderation with different priorities.
What is it I "just don't get", vb?
Well, hopefully, a serious topic board would be self-policing. If someone started a "what is your favorite toothpaste?" thread, it would be ignored and would quickly disappear.
I have been a proponent of an additional board for a long time...be it an adult board or a serious topic board...just as a way of wicking board traffic in different directions. I don't think there would need to be a lot of rules and regulations...hopefully, people would view it as just another option of a "place" on BWW to settle in and feel at home.

It wasn't just in ONE stupid thread, the same poster did it repeatedly in multiple threads that they started. I think that if no one replies to your thread, there is a probably a reason. But that point doesn't seem to be registering with some people.
That's a good point, Marlene. I guess to those we are talking about Idina opening her mouth is a serious topic....
How about putting some incredibly boring name on the board so that only those who know what it is will go to it -- like "The Board for Pedantic Academics" -- or something.
A suggestion for a serious topic board, if a moderator was willing to take this on, would be a system similar to Craigslist. Posters and participants can "flag" posts that they think are innappropriate. If a thread gets a certain amount of flags because so many people have an issue with it, the moderator can choose to delete it.
If a poster gets a certain amount of flags, their account will be deleted.

Um, no, theaterbabe, they did not.
By the way, have you checked out the Student Board yet?

Or a no-self-bumping rule? If no one replies to your thread, let it die or it gets deleted. That way ignoring a thread will actually work.
liotte - I love that.
Problem is - people could gang up and get someone deleted. Say, if two people were having a private argument and they decided to line up all their friends to take sides.
That's why ultimately, the moderator would be able to choose if the thread needed deletion.

TWoP has something like the flagging that you suggested Liotte. People can report mistakes on a special thread. TWoP is very heavily moderated though, which is one of the reasons that I like it.

Also, if it was an adult board, or serious topic board, hopefully the people there will not be trying to get their friends to take sides- leave that to the immature people on the other board.

Have YOU checked out the student board yet? There's a reason no one posts there.

Yeah, and the mods are the recappers, so anyone opposing them will be struck down by the force of their snark.
But, we have a 'report abuse' link... that could be used, as well.
Where is a report abuse link??
I was thinking, more like something in each thread or post that is more accessible.
On AIM, there is a warn icon, once someone has a certain %, they can no longer send IMs. I was thinking something similar to that as well.

"Have YOU checked out the student board yet?"
No, theaterbabe I have not. And there's a reason for that. That board is not FOR me. I have no urge to go check it out, I have no desire to crash its threads. Perhaps if some of the people who still manage to post "I'm writing a paper about _____" threads on THIS board, and like-minded individuals who want to chat up all the teen and tween and post-teen topics of the day DID use the board, there would be some equilibrium on this board.
But. No.
