I like the idea of more 'filtering' I do think it may work better to make the new thread the place to put the "inane" topics. It may be easier to define them.
Namo - while I don't say it often . . .
Ditto.

No one posts on the student board people! That's why if kids want responses to their posts, they'll post them on the OT board. Also, a lot of times, they also want adult's opinions. Little kids like playing with big kids, remember?

Actually the student board has a pretty nice volume of posts right now.
I've posted there on occasion with topics I've felt were better suited for that board and always received prompt replies.
Besides, if you all actually posted your off-topic school/student/teenage stuff on that board then there would be MORE than enough posts on that board.

I don't know if that would work, SP. But what MIGHT work would be a place called The Grown Up Board.
Yes, yes, we all know that there are grown ups who don't always behave grown upply (thank god), but what a grown up board might do is encourage anybody of any age who wants to take part at a certain level of discourse (including grown up and not particularly childish nonsense banter) a place to do just that. If a chronologically younger person wants to contribute and can keep up, nobody would be banishing them from the kingdom.
It could be a real sink or swim place.

It's YOUR place, theaterbabe. It's up to YOU to make it better.
Not to pick on people, but it seems like people who post on the OT board about topics that would very well be more appropriate on the student board fit into the cohort I mentioned earlier in the thread - the ego-centrics who think they're above the banal threads and that their threads deserve more focus and importance.

The Entitlement Problem, again.
Can I get that on a t-shirt, Tiff?
Did I mention that I want it NOW?!?!!!!

Wow. That's exactly what I want, Namo.
And, collen. No one's going to start posting "fun" threads on the student board because they also want adults to respond to them. Atleast, I do. Like I said before, I xan talk to kids anytime I want.
Out of curiousity - if you look at all the threads currently on the first page of this board, there are some with no replies. Should they automatically be deleted? One is about classical music. Not really an idiotic topic.
There are lots of threads that have conversations and participation going on, that are all within posting guidelines, but I'm just not interested in participating in them. What should happen to them?
I totally understand what everyone is saying about having to wade through the muck to get to the good stuff. But, who is to decide what is what...
Yes, there are the obvious ones. I saw a few threads get locked and deleted earlier tonight. But, are there any obvious changes to what is currently on the board?
Just wondering. I think that trying to find the solution is a very worthwhile activity and I'm glad to see that so many of us have ideas.
Namo, you are the voice of reason here. As usual.

"And, collen. No one's going to start posting "fun" threads on the student board because they also want adults to respond to them."
How about at least posting STUDENT RELATED STUFF on the student board.
For example, I used to participate in the Anthony Rapp welcome thread when it was actually about Anthony Rapp and discussing his book, etc. I now only occasionally lurk as 90% of the thread has become what the kids have due for English homework tomorrow. THAT stuff can go on the student board and not on other off-topic threads.
[The intention of this post is simply to express a thought provoked by this thread. I am in no way referring to anything that has gone on during this discussion; I am simply referencing situations that have occurred on the board in the past.]
A legitimate complaint regarding a specific age bracket (I'm a not limiting this to teens, folks) is just that: legitimate.
What irks me, however, is the unjustified hatred towards a particular group of people. Often, I come across posters, young and old alike, who scoff at others on the boards simply for their association with a particular age category. I understand that in many cases, a few people can tarnish the reputation of an entire group causing a general negative connotation, however, I feel that if I'm going to waste valuable time reading a rant, it should at least specific and justified.
If you have a particular problem with the teens, explain the problem, why it's a problem and what you suggest we do about it. Same goes for an issue with the adults.
I'm just sick of the "he said, she said", name calling, nonsense.
(Again, I am not referring to this thread. Most of the complaints stated throughout the current discussion have been quite reasonable and rational.)

What I think will happen is if it is designated as "grown up" then the same thing that happened in this thread will happen there too. I think it is probably a good idea in general, but much like the "student board" was less controversial than "kids go here" I think something else would better.

Yeah, collen, but a lot of what annoys people is the "kid" threads about toe hair or whatever. No one's going to post that on the student board because they want adults to respond to it as well.
Addy, good point. I think it's worth a try to start a thread on any topic which interests you. You never know who may have something to add. If no one responds, perhaps their could be a maximum number of days it can remain before deletion. (to clear the board a bit).
Good idea Jane.
Since I started this thread, I just want to give props to the people, especially the teens, who are participating here. With only a few exceptions, everyone has been discussing this issue in a serious manner, raising legitimate points and concerns, and are spelling things correctly and using proper grammar. Even though many of us don't agree, it has been an enlightening discussion and good to hear everyone's viewpoint on all sides. Thank you.
Thanks for the pm, vb player. I think it's ok to post that there was a misunderstanding.
If nobody posts on a thread it will naturally drop off the front page.
In a way, the board self-moderates.
It sounds like we all need to make better use of the Report Abuse link and let the people who run this board know when something is out of line. And, maybe we should all challenge ourselves to find inclusive, intelligent topics.
...though then the people who come here to talk about toe hair won't be happy.
But, that's a chance I'll take.
At the top of all the threads. With the links to the other boards, Guidelines, Search, FAQs, etc.

Ok, to summarize everything I've said tonight:
I think the best way to solve the excessive obnoxious posts problem is to make a serious topic board. It wouldn't have any age limit. Anyone that could keep up could post. What a lot of other people said.
There are flaws in that. But there's flaws in everything.
And thanks, Namo. For arguing with me.
Liotte, I think we can also send PMs to a moderator screen name.
