American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

It was sooooooo long ago that many people thought it might help Side Show's advance.

And I mean THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION.

"Disappointing, lackluster, but, ultimately, satisfying, finale."

"ROTFL"

Some of us are actually capable of holding in our minds two opposing views. To clarify for those who need the clarification... for me, the finale itself - not the entire series - was lackluster and somewhat disappointing as a single episode, but, ultimately, I was satisfied with the series on the whole, and the way in which they resolved most of the storylines and wrapped things up. It really isn't all that complicated.

It was nice to let Twisty and Mordrake make an appearance in the finale, as it helped to remind me of the exact moment this season went completely off the rails.
"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man

My biggest disappointment with the season was the idea of getting rid of characters like Twisty and great actresses like Kathy Bates and Frances Conroy so early into the show. My favorite season will always be "Asylum", this season is definitely at the bottom of my list below last year's very uneven "Coven". I would be really happy to see Jessica Lange smoke her way through another season or two...

What's funny is that ASYLUM is now everyone's favorite season, but it's still such a hot F'ing mess. Remember when it was on, everyone talked about how it really had the same problems that all these other seasons have had and how it was like the kitchen sink, with every horror cliche thrown in and then abandoned within the same episode? But nobody remembers that now, I guess.

I do somewhat agree with you, what I did enjoy most in the last episode was the nod to "All that Jazz" at the end of the episode when Jessica Lange is going to "Freak Show Heaven"...

I was SO DAMN SURE that the final scene was going to be one last twist, that Elsa would walk out onstage in her "carnie heaven" and discover that her eternal performance was not singing Bowie songs, but getting her legs chopped off again, forever.

But no. That would be too much like dramatic irony.

(By the way, have they started guessing next season's concept? I'm betting on American Horror Story: Spooky Boat.)

Jordan, you are right. I thought ASYLUM was a mess when it aired, but maybe because of Sarah Paulson blowing the roof off of that last scene, I remember it as "the good season." I also remember thinking COVEN turned into a boring, not that fun mess, but now I remember it as my favorite season of all, and watching FREAK SHOW I kept wanting it to be COVEN. I feel like that happened to me with the first season of GLEE. What is it about Ryan Murphy that makes me have such short-term memory (or is it all the 420-ing that goes on while I watch Ryan Murphy shows)?
I hated the finale so much. I hated that they wasted a totally-game Sarah Paulson. I hated Jessica Lange's character (whom I thought was fabulous early on). I hated that Frances Conroy and Patti LaBelle, who should have been the leads of the season as far as I'm concerned, were killed off so early. I hated the way Maggie died. I hated that all the freaks ended up being massacred like idiots.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I still never watched all of Asylum. There was an episode early on where Chloë Sevigny had her limbs amputated and she was ... was it covered in boils? I was out after that, but I did watch that finale.

I bet next year has a lot of nonsense about connecting all the seasons, even though they totally made it up in the middle of this season.

A lot of online chatter I've read is romanticizing Murder House while decrying Freak Show, but Murder House was a hot mess from the get go, too. Moira made no sense. "He's probably on his fourth unprotected blow job" made no sense.

Coven was really really terrible, but it skated by for such a long time on its concept and the way all those actresses devoured every every bit of scenery they encountered. I think it was the most consistently funny season as well, which is just what you want from a show called American Horror Story, I know. I still laugh when I think about the way Angela Bassett delivered "What the head said!" But that plot line was a big bag of bullsh:t. There was no consistency with the rules of the magic. There were no stakes because you knew that if someone died they were more than likely going to come back to life. Every episode would simply reverse whatever happened in the previous, etc, etc. By the time Stevie Nicks wandered in, there was just no hope.

Yeah, even that first season was no different than all the others. But I guess time heals all wounds when it comes to people's memories.

That's so funny you say that, because for months my fantasy has been American Horror Story: Barbra Streisand, where Barbra starts losing it in her mansion and the show uses footage of her from the past to interact with her.

I hope they bring Dandy to McKinley High to kill all the Glee kids like he did the freaks.

See! All seasons of all shows are connected!!!

If Murphy wants to steal American Horror Story: Barbra Streisand from me like he stole the connection theory from Vulture, I'm okay with that.

American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

Believe me, I've thought it through, and I don't think she would. I don't think she would like the conceit of acting against her younger screen performances, and I think she probably would want to direct and edit every episode. If it were my show I would let her.

Murder House. Oh how I long for the simpler days and small pleasures of Murder House! Sure it made no sense but it hadn't worn out my patience the way this season finally did.

Oh, and maybe it's the pre-storm party-ing typing, but I can't stop laughing in an out loud manner over:

American Horror Story: Spooky Boat

Is that not THE best?
