American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

And I think it's safe to say that NPH could greatly benefit from going to an acting class or two.

Yes but, in order to accomplish that, he'd need to take a break from blowing smoke up his own a**.

Unlikely.

How is it he was a better actor at 15 than he is at 41?

I don't have a problem with Neil Patrick Harris' lack of versatility. I think some of the best actors are stars who bring a strong star presence to a given role, Harris is very funny and has an ease on screen that more highly regarded actors would envy. I think David Fincher used his persona brilliantly in GONE GIRL (and yes, I know that was a very polarizing performance), but AMERICAN HORROR STORY is no Fincher drama. A bolder version of this arc would have turned Harris' showman charm and turned it into something creepy, he'd have been great as Dandy actually. The whole "my puppet does crazy things but it's actually me" is so blah, and his storyline with Bette and Dot had no relevance, no nothing.
Where are the stakes? I think that's why even though I was defending the season till fairly late, I am now joining those of you who have called BS on the season from the beginning. I guess I thought something would eventually tie the season together but every storyline that has been introduced has been so easily squandered and disposed of. And I can't forgive Ryan Murphy for wasting Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, and Sarah Paulson in roles that went nowhere.

Well I'm no huge NPH fan, I largely agree with JC here, and I wouldn't want anyone but Finn chewing the scenery as Dandy, Ray, I agree with many of your points.

The ventriloquist doll story is SOO hackneyed and, while this show plays on horror tropes, they haven't even tried to give it a twist (except for the fact that it's forced into a freak show... I guess?)

Exactly--where are the stakes? I, like you, had bigger hopes for this season and held on, compared to Coven (where we saw a lack of any stakes from very early on.) I mean Asylum did manage to pull itself together spectacularly, and even though everyone guessed the twist of Murder House early on (seriously, Murphy and Falchuk are rarely as clever with their surprises as they seem to think they are,) it more or less did, as well.

So what's left for the finale? A showdown between the Freaks and Dandy? yawn. What happened to the townspeople calling Jimmy a hero? What happened to... well everything.

And I know this show never has any follow through (I was shocked they even had Jimmy find out about his dad--but wouldn't Danny Houston have left his job when Elsa took off?) but it seems even more of a waste to introduce NPH as the Twins' dream man, have them off camera read the file they say they won't read, walk out and then never see any reaction to what he did or anything. It's little, obvious things like this that are constantly missing.

You'd think you were critiquing Citizen Kane. It's a fun, twisted, trashy, lurid, over-the-top camp fest! Smoke a little weed, dim the lights, put on a pair of surround sound head phones, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

ETA: Loved the latest tie-in to ASYLUM!

I liked this episode. First one I enjoyed completely since the demise of Twisty. I like that NPH had the one moment of true horror in this season. Oh when those entrails fell out!

I'm glad there's only one more episode, since until tonight it's only been so much treading water for so many weeks.

I agree with most of the criticisms here. Though I've been choosing to enjoy each episode on its own as a separate little piece of candy as opposed to a cohesive series. But Murphy even sabotages that. Letting us know that Elsa survives to become a TV star two episodes before the final two episodes in which the freaks turn against her and plot to kill her. We go into it knowing she wont die. So, as others have said, where are the stakes...even on an episode by episode basis???

Ryan Murphy always makes me question where the line between "bad art" and "different goals" is. It's evident that he is conscious that everyone is judging him by a conventional standard of storytelling, and that he disdains that kind of criticism. I don't think he's shooting for narrative anymore as much as he is for tableaux.

And now that Dandy has murdered and coerced his way into literally owning the freak show, I find it increasingly hard to read it as anything other than classic Ryan Murphy meta-commentary on the criticism of his author avatar Darren Criss essentially becoming the star of "Glee" despite mixed critical reviews.

I read that Elsa is going to use Sister Jude as an alias-remember Sister Jude was a singer? However, I think Sister Jude had a showed her legs.

I can't remember all the details but was she really a singer? I know there was the hallucination of The Name Game. If they said she actually had been a singer, Sister Jude should have been a great actress given how well she supprrrrrrrressed ze German accent vunce she moved to that town ovuh neah Bahstin.

Namo, yes she sang in a seedy club and got drunk and banged guys. Her career never took off. I believe full legs were shown but Murphy could make something up to cover that too I suppose.

Anyone else find it hysterical how the fat rich girl is just casually going along with the killing and maiming of people? Does she even know who Ethel is? HAHA.

God that was such a disappointing ending. I'm not sure what I was expecting. In typical Ryan Murphy fashion the freaks got massacred, and only the principals survived. I don't know, I was so disappointed, probably because I genuinely enjoyed the episodes earlier in the season. Some of you called the BS from the get go, should have listened to your warnings.

Tonight I wondered if the nihilism and the senselessness is the point. Nothing mattered. No stakes. Was Elsa in heaven at the end?

American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

What utter kacke.

What a waste of time.

Why why why do all the actors rave about working for Murphy? What is it about him they "trust"? Because that's the word that always comes up. Is it the fact that there is no continuity, they get to just play every scene and they're told not to worry about it making sense or to think about continuity or context?

It's really like a child wrote it. "And then, and then Dandy walks around and KILLS THEM ALL and his gun NEVER RUNS OUT OF BULLETS!!"

Just crap.

Disappointing, lackluster, but, ultimately, satisfying, finale. No one here predicted it. I believe the prediction was that all of the freaks would go after Dandy. And I still say it all works better when taken as a whole, rather than on an episode-by-episode basis. Didn't really expect for it to amount to anything earth-shattering. But, for me, it was still a fun ride.

American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

My most lasting thoughts about last night's episode:

Why did Meryl Jr's hair never grow back in that spot they shaved? I accepted that her facial tattoos never looked "fresh," but the female pattern balding was a bit much.

Why was no one running after the first 5-10 gunshots? Why was the only runner the woman with no legs?

Why on earth did Lobster-Tate have to sneak in RIGHT in the spot where they were having lunch. Couldn't he just slip in somewhere else?

They all get a happy ending? What?!
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

ROTFL

Why did they go ahead and let Elsa do the Halloween show after they discovered she had violated her morals clause?

Ratings? The show was DRECK! The whole season was garbage. And I hated Jessica Langes performance this year. Girl can smoke a cigarette. I will give her that.

All honesty, though, even though Angela Bassett is pushing 60 I totally buy she's still of childbearing age. I want to play a game where you're shown stills of her from What's Love Got to Do With It and stills from American Horror Story and guess which is which. I can't get over how little she's aged in 20 years.
