First, roscoe, I think this is "news" b/c it's a feel good story, a giving back story...a nice little story. AS has finally come into her own so to speak, making lots of dough now; I'm almost certain she leaves a "nice" or "generous" tip very often, especially since she used to be a bartender. Let's hope she doesn't listen to a "business manager" when they tell her to stop doing things like this.
On the other hand it's still great PR for Hamilton, and secondly for her of course. It's easy to continue liking her and her work when you hear she is also a nice fellow citizen of Planet Earth. (And if you have not seen her shows on Comedy Central, you must check them out! Amy Schumer and the all star cast of her black and white "12 Angry Men" parody/homage in that series is brilliant!)

Of course it's a nice PR story for AS, but still in very poor taste of the staff member to name drop and say other famous people haven't left them a tip as huge.

Yeah. Nice publicity for Amy. But the majority of us who have "been there" and "get it", just give a generous tip because we have been there and can afford to do so and we don't expect special recognition for it.
Whoever dropped this story, did Ms. DeJohn and her co-workers a huge disservice. People reading the story now, who have yet to attend the show, will remember one thousand dollars and think twice before tipping anything at all after paying ridiculous amounts of money for their theatre tickets. And God help Ms. DeJohn if Kanye ever shows up again! :)

I agree that it was very silly to alert the press. I got plenty of big tips from celebrities when I worked in restaurants but I did not pick up the phone and call the NY Times. The bigger story is when they leave a crappy tip but again I would not write a blog about it even though one of them is appearing on Broadway as we speak. Page 6 clue: Orange juice.

Well I had to use google to see who she is [still don't really know].
Tipping is/should be a private matter and sure that amount, other than in Vegas, could have been a mistake.
It seems very grandstanding to me, I've made it, here's a couple of hundred each to make you feel better.
Going by American TV shows/movies 'noone' will give you the time of day or information unless money changes hand but this very public display of excess is vulgar and in poor taste.

But it's unlikely Hamilton or Amy Schumer planted this story just to get more ink, sites get more traffic when posting about a hot topic, nothing hard to figure out here... I'm just glad BWW wasn't in existence when RENT was a phenomenon.

Large surprise tips from celebrities or otherwise have been reported in many news sources numerous times (a popular "human interest" piece). The press LOVES stuff like this. This story happened to take place at the theatre where Hamilton is running. It just sorta makes sense that it would pop up. And it makes sense that a mammoth blockbuster runaway hit gets mentioned a lot. It always happens. Over time, it dies down and another new hot show will get tons of exposure. And the world goes 'round and 'round and 'round and 'rooooouuuuuund.
I prefer news about Hamilton over Kardashians or Madonna or Trump any day. So, yay!

Certainly in no form that has been preserved in the archives. I think I first set up an interview with Anthony Rapp for my LGBT youth website over AOL, and most websites didn't even have comments at that point. Things were so archaic then, it's almost like going to All That Chat now...
