She is free to state her opinion. She has to be free to also accept the blow back it causes.

SNAFU, with Madonna it's a different situation. Having known her puts it in a different light, but I don't think anyone's saying she's a good role model, am I right? I don't know.
"Considering you are disregarding her own achievements in order to focus on the body suits, perhaps you're right."
No I'm not disregarding them. And I mentioned the body suits in a reply to Phyllis's comment that he had no problem with them.

Posted: 4/29/13 at 9:37pmWell, I mentioned them because they were a specific point in the first post.

I could settle for a world class superstar as a daughter.
Madonna is an amazing role model.

We can use lots of pop stars who have won multiple awards as role models. They come from all genres ranging from classical music to spoken word to rap.
Lots of those people I admire, and lots of them have pretty shady backgrounds. That notwithstanding, Beyonce is one whose message on the stage is plenty of sex (to me she borders on vulgar). That's the difference for me, and maybe it's because I'm old, but I stand by my opinion.

Thanks, baby.
I think that conflating sex trafficking, voluntary sex work, and sparkly-costumed music concerts is closed-minded, elitist, misleading, and flat-out confusing. I think that reducing Beyoncé's success to "looking hot, being desired by alpha males, wielding power over others with her body and sexuality" says more about you than it does about Beyoncé or about the young women who admire her. And I think that reducing child sexual exploitation to "I want glittery underpants like Beyoncé!" seriously misses… pretty much everything, Jesus Christ, I don't even know where to start on that one.
Beyoncé's not a bad role model.

Jane if you new Beyonce would it be different then? Just beacause you met Madonna that gives her a pass? Is she a rolemodel? Look how he inspired fashion in her Material Girl Days! How many "Tweens" emmulated her?
I personally have no problem with a performer or artist of any kind using their body as a part of their Art. I do not find the human body vulgar in any of it's various stages of aging. To celebrate the body is to celebrate life it's self. Just MHO.

Her controversial fashion should be considered one of the many reasons she's a positive role model, the fact that she's not wearing what society says a woman should wear and is not afraid of what people will say about her as long as she's happy with the way she looks. If anything feminists should applaud her for empowering women.

Fine all that, how does this differ from Beyonces wearing sheer body revealing outfits? Is this not celebrating the woman's body?
eta: I am not a fan of Beyonce, sheet, I don't even know any of her music to be honest. I find nothing wrong with her bedazzled nipple suit or sheer form revealing get ups.

SNAFU, I didn't just "meet" Madonna. I'd be glad to discuss how I know her in private if you like.
Guys, I respect your opinions and it's fine with me whatever anyone thinks of anyone else.
I love how people put words in other's mouths. I never said the human body was vulgar.
Seeing how this is going, I'm bowing out of the convo!

Posted: 4/29/13 at 10:44pmI don't have a problem with Beyonce's revealing costumes or dancing or whatever. I just don't think that a pop star should be a kid's role model. I know that they are out there as role models, but I just don't know that it's the ideal situation. I don't have a daughter so what the hell do I know. I just have a son who's biggest role model is his dad. I think he does look up to some pro athletes, but I don't know how healthy that is either as a role model. The debate will always go on I guess.

Madonna is an amazing self promoter, she should give lessons on how to manipulate the press and keep her name in the press. I do think though she should keep her lady bits to herself now that shes in her 50s. show some dignity girl! even strippers hang it up and keep their clothes on once they hit that age.
Beyonce is Madonna Light in my opinion. Shes basically in it for shock value. That nipple suit really does show that she is an attention whore. Her Labia Shorts will be next.
If you have real honestto goodness talent, like Adele, Lily Allen, Tegan and Sara or Amy Whinehouse (God rest her soul) you can let your music speak for itself, not your nipples.
