Also, note that reel was when they proposed a half hour show.
The show works fine as a half hour. I think the problem was that I saw the reel AFTER I had seen those early seasons. I couldn't watch it without missing Alyson's Willow, and without any sign of Angel, and a slower/more leisurely pace.
Are there any non-sitcom half-hour shows? Because, funny as the episode is, it does not play like a comedy in the traditional sitcom sense.
I guess the reel worked fine as a half hour but once the stories would have gotten more complex it wouldn't have worked that good, I guess...
I'm glad they got it together for a full-on hour. Then again, perhaps Joss sensed they'd want the show in the comic vein of the film and put it together as a half hour? I don't know. I've never read TOO much about the original versus the final, except that it was first shot as a half hour show.
I do not know fo any dramas that were half hour off the top of my head but I'm sure there's something.
Is Rescue Me a half hour?
I guess half an hour is just too short to handle drama on TV. When you think about it, those "dramatic" episodes of sitcoms tended to be two-parters (therefore, like an hour episode)
Remember when they tried to re-edit Ally McBeal and take out the courtroom drama and leave the silliness in to have a half hour syndicated show called just Ally? Yea...that worked well.
Regardless, I'm glad Joss got his hour. The show is paced perfectly.
Well, I think we're all in agreement Joss is god.
I sure hope he gets one more show on network tv. Wasn't his development deal after Buffy for three? That means there's one left after Angel and Firefly.
I'd have loved to see "Buffy - The Animanted Series" on TV...
The concept drawings looked really promising!
They were promising! I saw them a long time ago and haven't thought of them since. A shame that didn't happen. Are those still floating around the net somewhere? I remember them being cute.
That might have proven to be a way of integrating the character of Dawn in a more endearing way.
Plus, I read scripts had already been drafted in preparation. And all of them by legit Whedonverse writers. Even if we never see the show, I'd like to have those scripts see the light of day sometime.

Forgot all about the animated series. Darn. It would have been fun!
Oh, how I love Google...
Thanks. My work computer hates Google image searches.
Silly corporations and their ideas about "employee productivity"...
oh god! I miss the animated series and it never even happened!
Those drawing look so good, this series would have been just as wonderful as the original show... just in a different way!
Did they at least do a pilot or something?
The same way I feel when I think about a Joss Whedon written, directed, and CONTROLLED Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie...
Stop making me giddy!
But, you know, I have to admit a little bit of love for the movie, even.
I bought it at a STEAL of a price at Best Buy, too. $5.99.
Couldn't NOT own it.
But it's so... so... tacky!
All part of its charm, Guy. I mean, come on, Pee Wee Herman's death scene? Excellent popcorn fun.
Okay, I admit that I own the "novelization" of the movie "based on the screenplay by Joss Whedon"...
Do you guys own those "Watcher's Guides"? LOVE THEM!
So informative!
I love the movie. It's different. It has its place. And of course I had to own it.
I don't think I spent more than $6, either.
I WISH I had picked up that novelization. I've never been big on comics, but my love of this show always made me wish I got into them more. There is a decent amount of Joss penned-approved stories and stories Buffy writers worked on.
EDIT- And yes, I have both Watcher's Guides and the Monster Book. And the Sunnydale Yearbook. And the Once More, With Feeling script/music book...

Oh, how could I forget the comics?!
I have two or three boxing full of them...
I never was much into comics but those were great!
I do have "Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale" which is a collection of serious articles regarding philosophy and religion as it relates to the Buffyverse.
Get "Tales of the Slayer" Volumes 1 and 2...
Short stories! Awesome!
The afore-mentioned 19 year old bought me one of the Buffy books. I can't even tell you the name righ tnow. total fluff, but fun. Kind of like my typing abilities right now.
