joyce.
There's an example of Joss really not doing so well at first. God, Joyce was every bad stereotype of a mom possible in the first season and then she became a bit more real. Even with that overly-hard-on-Buffy edge she kept, she was real. And likeable. And, ultimately, that's what gave her death so much impact.
I STILL get chills thinking about the end of that episode, with Dawn's hand slowly reaching toward's Joyce's face.
Oh, I missed some nice talking...
I wish I was a little more eloquent in English so I could post something a little more intelligent than those "two sentence" posts I make on this thread!
Judge me when I tell you that Joyce was one of my favorite characters. Brian can tell you that I totally bought into the "Joyce is all better" routine after she was sick, and she started dating again.
I was still too naive at the time to recognize what Joss was doing to me. And I bought it.
And then I was crushed. Absolutely crushed. Curling into the bed with a pillow and my knees up at my chin. Oh Joyce.
Aww, why would I judge you? It's enough that you love the show. I don't know if I fully didn't expect it...but how wonderfully and expertly done.
And oh my god! The episode when Dawn raises her from the dead. Lord.
Yeah, that's "Conversations With Dead People", the same episode where Willow talks to Tara through Cassie...
Awesome episode!
Love the song at the beginning and at the end... "Blue"!
Maniac, it was so facinating for me to watch someone see the show for the first time and not know anything. You had no ideas of what was going to happen. When I realized the show was brand new to you, I was very careful about spoilers or hints. When I watched the show, I was very much on on everything- the actors, appearances -and the show was also promoted often on TV. So the 'trick' or theme of an episode was usually something I was aware of before I watched. Maniac had no commercials, no previews, no ads, no news articles announcing actors were leaving or staying weeks before episodes aired. It was pure storytelling.
Watching the show with someone who doesn't know where the story is going leads to some fun observing. I personally was never as attached to Joyce. It really took the ax and the "Stay away from my daughter for me to start paying close attention. But Maniac was full on in love with the character who, while stereotypical in her initial characterization, was still allowed to be more real than a lot of other TV parents on teen shows. Watching the reactions from her sickness and recovery and death made me appreciate more how even small supporting characters had well-shaped story arcs.
And I was punched. Hard. Every time Maniac was tricked or surprised. Especially when it involved the death of the character. "How could you do that to me? You made me love her, and then you took her away..."
GfG, I love that song, too. And we should- Joss wrote it. But I think singer is talking about the episode "Forever" which is right after "The Body" The one where Dawn goes to Joel Grey for help in a spell to bring Joyce back.
Oh, okay! I confused those episodes...
But now that you've mentioned it:
What a joy it was to see Joel Grey on Buffy!
I hated Rona as well! I mean all the potentials bugged me, but she bugged me the most...complaining about everything.
I agree with singer on this all--I can't imagine Willow and Xander would have turned on Buffy. I mean Spike having the most faith in her of anyone? It just...ulgh.
It all goes back to some of the character decisions I had with that season, like what Buffy said to Giles. Honestly, the Buffy-Giles father-daughter relationship was one of my favorite on the series. When you think of where they started, and then how incredibly happy she was to see him in season 6's end, his song, which showed how much he deeply cared for her. Aww. That's why what happened to them in season 7 killed me so much.
Joyce won me over in School Hard as well. I didn't love or hate her prior to that, but she was just great there. Of course I hated how she reactedi in Becoming, but it made sense for the character. But when Buffy settled back and Joyce accepted everything, that's when I loved Joyce.
But Joel Grey was the reason Buffy died...weirdness. But yes, cool to see him.
I really liked Chloe! Mainly because she loved Tigger...
It was quite scary when she hung herself and The First appeared as her...
I loved the Buffy-Giles fight. It fit right into a parent-child dynamic for me. You grow up, and you realize that your parent is not the ideal you always looked up to. He's a flawed human being. I think Buffy's comments and 'closing the door' was a sign of that recognition, but also done in an emotional moment. It did not permenantly destroy their relationship. She will always love Giles. She just needed to learn to think for herself and not depend on Giles. That is what Giles song is about. That action, as hard as it was to watch happen to two characters you love, was Buffy doing just that. She didn't 'need' Giles anymore.
That Joel Grey was randomly the reason Buffy died was very odd indeed. So weird to see. But I, too, loved the randomness of it.
Any Potential that spoke with a silly accent immediately move to the top of the annoying list (yup, that puts them above Rona or Kennedy)
Like the REALLY annoying SUTHUN GUHL at the slumber party?
Ahaha, I loved those "conversations" between Giles and that Chinese (?) potential...
Yep, another "one sentence post" by GfG!
Aww, Chao-Ann. Did not find her at all annoying. The return of funny subtitles and Giles Drawings...
LOL! Thank you! So good!
Do you know that episode of "Ally McBeal" where Ling talks to the jury in court in Mandarin and actually says things like
"It doesn't really matter what I'm saying because none of you can understand my language but my sad face shows you that I have a lot of compassion for the culprit..."?
I adore Ling on Ally McBeal. I would have that show on DVD, too, but full seasons haven't been released in the US...
Funny subtitles will always be one of my favorite things.
Really? They were released in Germany but not in the US?
That's strange...
Holy cats! Guess what just arrived in the mail? 7 years of Buffy!!! It's a good thing this is Saturday because I'm not going to be getting much sleep tonight.
(I'll be signing off now for a couple of days....)
wow, that was quick mamie. i'm surprised and happy that DDDVD worked for you but that is so not helping me not buy the series.
let us know if any of the 41 discs are damaged (and if you could do it before tomorrow that would be great, thanks!)
You still haven't ordered, RobbO? Shame on you!
Ulgh. I decided to start watching my tapes tonight, but I'm having some trouble. Going through my videos, I've recovered Season 1 tape 2, season 2 tapes 1 and 2 and all the season 3 tapes
I can't decide whether or not to start halfway through the first season...
Bibbidi-bobbidi-BUMP!
Yay for pop-culture references!
"Excuse me, Mary Poppins, you're not listening...
-Faith to Mrs. Post in "Revelations"
"Kiss rocks? Why would anyone want to kiss..? Oh, wait, I get it..."
-Willow in "Band Candy"
Yay for Buffy. I didn't get to watch any episodes this weekend as the BF was busy getting tons of furniture deliveries.
Nothing rocks like spending your off days putting together stuff from Ikea.
The good news is my spare television is now resting comfortably on his new entertainment center, which means Buffy is ready to be viewed in multiple locations.
Nice!
Oh, how I love IKEA...
Didn't watch Buffy, either. It was more one of those "Moulin Rouge" weekends.
Shh, don't defile the holiness of Buffy with Nicole's wonky face.
Watched the presentation reel, Welcome to the Hellmouth, and The Harvest.
It's The Witch time!
<--- LOVES that summer internship is over!
Maniac and I will check back later to remind you all of how much you would all love to be watching Buffy right now, too
