but i am 100% pro-choice. just because i don't think it's the right thing to do doesn't mean i should be able to dictate what a woman does with her body.

If McCain is elected and Palin’s position on choice is in place, he will appoint Justices to the United States Supreme Court with a directive to cast votes to reverse Roe. When that happens, the right to privacy for all men and women will be in jeapordy. States may then have the legal right to formulate laws which gives judges the right to order woman to have abortions due to their health, mental capacity, or their criminal background.
If your friends say that they will vote for McCain because Palin is “fresh” and a maverick, remind them that if they are raped, Palin will not protect their right to terminate a pregnancy caused by an act of violence.

-I don't agree at all, if you got drunk at some party and had some fun, it was your fault, why does an innocent baby has to pay for it? And live with someone who didn't even decide to have the baby? You should still be able to choose, and the right choice is probably abortion in a case like that.

WOW. Calm down. I thought we were all going to have civil discussions that would respect each other's viewpoints. I don't think anyone in this thread who has disagreed with you has done so with any vehemence or hostility. We're all playing nicely.

Sarah Palin is an annoying distraction. She's also on the cover of every damn magazine. CRINGE.

Yes, I agree, sluts who get drunk and have FUN do not deserve to have access to abortion. Muscle really has a point there. You don't GET to have an abortion because an innocent baby will have to pay. As opposed to evil babies conceived by sober people not having any fun. Those MUST be aborted. Men like muscle should make the rules and the world would be a better place.
Also, teens should have the decision made by their mothers. That's worked out real well for that Levi dude who shot his gun in Bristol County... and of course Casey Anthony's mother wouldn't let her get an abortion OR give up baby Caylee. And that worked out well too.

I'm wondering where you got that info. Everything I've ever heard about rape is that it has nothing to do with sex. It's all about power.

Basically I was saying that, while I am pro-life, we shouldn't be wasting time with abortion legislation, and work on treating the causes of so many unwanted pregnancies.

If you're pro-choice, you don't have to get an abortion yourself. You don't have to ever want an abortion for yourself. You don't even have to think abortion is anything less than murder if you don't want to. But being pro-choice is recognising that while these are your decisions, other women appreciate and need to be able to make the decisions that are right for them rather than having them made for them.
I am pro-choice. I'm not "pro-choice but..." or "pro-choice although..." or "pro-choice except...". There is no "but". I am PRO-CHOICE. Beause this is MY body. If I want to get it pierced, I want that right. If I want to get it tattooed, I want that right. If I want to sit in the corner and carve Patti LuPone's name into my thigh, I want that right. If I want a clump of cells removed from my uterus, I WANT THAT RIGHT.
Besides, think about it. Really THINK about it. What's worse? A woman who has an abortion (which isn't as frivolous as getting a sundae, or patting a dog; most women who get abortions have to really soul-search and even the ones who really want it aren't guaranteed an emotionally easy time)? Or a woman who isn't allowed an abortion, so gives birth to a child she resents, hates, abuses, abandons, maims, kills? One of these scenarios is incredibly traumatic for TWO individuals, and I guarantee you it isn't the first.
Hey, does anyone here remember Prohibition? I wasn't there, but I understand that even though alcohol was illegal, people still went out and got drunk. Just imagine if abortion is made illegal! Women won't stop having abortions; they'll just be going to shady backstreet abortionists armed with wire hangers and aspirin instead of nice clean clinics with supportive staff. Thanks, anti-abortion crowd! No, really! THANKS!

I am against abortion being used as a form of birth control.
I think that after someone's third abortion, they should be sterilized.
That said, I would NOT vote to outlaw abortion, and I would certainly vote in favor of stem cell research (which I think is a related issue).
In a perfect world, there would be no abortions. But this is not a perfect world. God has given us free will. And while it is my hope that people would choose not to have abortions, outlawing it entirely isn't the answer.
Besides, there are more important things for the government to be doing right now than voting on that. Like making sure sex education is not "abstinence-only". And trying to get our country out of financial crisis.

But what you do with your life is your business. And I don't believe it's my place to be legislating it.

Oh heck, I don't care if this comes off patronising; I love people like Mistress Overdone who are able to have their principles without forcing them on everyone else.
The best thing British parliament did recently was go "hey, y'know how women can legally abort up until the 24th week? Shall we shorten that?". Not because they wanted to shorten it, but because after an entire day of talking and voting and being political, they eventually decided not to shorten it after all. Sure, it was a lot of work for ultimately no change, but I'm very pleased they let it be. (And rather annoyed that my MP was voting to shorten it every time. I don't like my MP. XP)

The argument against abortion as birth control is a talking point I've never quite grasped. Technically, aren't ALL abortions a form of birth control? I'm not being flippant. Extreme as it is, all abortion is birth control, is it not?
Should abortion become criminalized, are we going to punish the women who are found to have had one? If so, why not? It's a through line the most stridently pro-life never want to follow.
