Judging the trailer strictly on its own merit (if you hadn't seen the play) ...

I can't tell much of anything, other than it has a boatload of Oscar-bait A-list actors in it, using their Southern white trash accents, and it was produced by last year's Best Picture producers. The scenes in the trailer just look like a very large dysfunctional family bitching about their lives at a big dinner gathering. There doesn't seem to be any actual plot here at all.

Well... there you have it. The Yin/Yang of life. Having seen the play, I had almost zero interest in seeing the movie, until I watched the trailer. I'll be there on opening day. Just wish I didn't have to wait until November.

I liked the film of BUG a great deal when I saw it on DVD, after having enjoyed KILLER JOE a lot when I saw it. Maybe Friedkin should have directed this.

Again -- we'll see. It is just a trailer, after all, who knows what the film itself is actually like, it may be just as mean and brutal as the play was. They're going to have to walk a very fine line in marketing this, of course -- they can't alienate too much of the potential audience.

I'm conflicted. I could barely stand The Iron Lady - Streep as in-her-'prime' Thatcher made it tolerable. I enjoyed Doubt even after seeing Cherry Jones on tour - I felt the film nicely straddled the line between faithful stage adaptation and refreshing treatment of the material.

I've always been a Streep fan and for a period of time would only bother going to see a new release if it was a Meryl Streep film. Basically from The Devil Wears Prada through Julie and Julia, and I really enjoyed her work in both. Later career Streep is a marvel and I enjoy the interview persona she has adapted as well - Streep is incredibly entertaining on chat shows.

I don't know if I can get the memory of that original cast out of my head and nothing of Meryl and Julia in this trailer seems particularly grabbing. I'm more interested now in seeing how this amazing supporting ensemble creates the world of the family.

Edit: the tag line does seem to lack originality. I keep waiting for 'and with Miley Cyrus as..' to pop up.

Looks like my fears are confirmed. John Wells leavened, flattened DRAMA. With enough cuddliness for the masses.

I miss Enlightened.

I liked Bug and grew to really respect Killer Joe too (and I respect the fact Friedkin knew this movie was not about box office with an NC-17 rating).

John Wells is a good friend of Heslov and Clooney. Good TV guy (though Shameless has become a little too trashy than class-conscious) but his directing gigs have on record been working on films as a director for hire with his buddies. His last movie was a Recession drama The Company Men starring Ben Affleck and a bunch of A-listers.

Unless Mike Nichols is unwell there is no reason to not have immediately called Mike Nichols to adapt this movie.

Does anyone really ever happily eat their words?

The trailer's tone has nothing to do with the play, it's anything but heartwearming, and there's moments in it that are actually intense in context that are clearly taken out of context here to attract audiences somehow. Not sure who they're trying to attract. I actually think there's still a lot of potential, it just looks like a misconceived preview, I wish they had gone with daring instead of generic.

I thought the trailer was good. I don't think we can expect them to put all the knock-down family fighting, cussing and dark secrets in the trailer released 6 months before the film. They're showcasing the A-list talent and framing the film as an ensemble dysfunctional family drama that would appeal to a wide audience.

Anne of the Thousand Days. A Man For All Seasons.

Was upset when Streep and Roberts were cast. Said I would not see it. Now I may. Trailers are supposed to make you want to see a movie. After seeing it, I am actually impressed with the bit of Roberts we see but unfortunately my fear of Streep' casting has been confirmed. Didn't like the bits I saw. Annette Benning should have been cast, in my opinion

Diane Ladd and Dern would have been genius. Jesus Christ, movie casting sucks nowadays-its all about overseas box office.

Ellen Burstyn would have nailed Violet as well. Yes she a wee bit old, but still a stunner!

Roberts is putrid. She is the most rank actress going. The timbre of her voice makes me not believe a word she says. Why wasn't Dern, Collette or even Morton cast! UGH!
