Would love to know more about Miriam! Does she know Vicky Simon, whom I adore?

Celia Franca - founder of NBC will be here in a few weeks. :)

Well Well! Celia in the house. Hopefully she will trip & colapse in a heap o dust! The late Betty Oliphant was a friend of mine ( she is how I met Erik) & Celia treated her abominably in the end after a 30 yr friendship. I acknowledge she helped to create one of our best companys but she is far too much of a megalomaniac to ever receive my blessings. PM me & I will tell u the whole evil little story.

re: Ballet anyone?

LOL!

I have some good stories as well. I worked with her three times in NYC. But you've got to love the legend. She was also a great beauty! It's been 17 years of more since we have seen each other. I am looking forward to this.

re: Ballet anyone?

Huge dance fan never saw a ballet though so my choreographer says thats appalling and that since our birthdays are the same month instead of exchanging gifts I buy dinner, he buys tickets and we are going to a ballet. He used to be a ballet dancer in many different ballet companies so he knows what to see :)
When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

re: Ballet anyone?

I used to go to City Ballet all the time, but Peter Martins irks me to no end. I adore the Balanchine (especially Barocco and Square Dance) and the Robbins rep (The Concert is like an I Love Lucy episode-no matter how many times you've seen it you still laugh)
Happy to see Julie Kent back at ABT. Love La Fille
City Center has some great troupes as well.
And Pennsylvania Ballet is great as well.

re: Ballet anyone?

Love dancing it, hate watching it, SO boring. I really have no appreciation for it. Pointe, all I have to say is ouch. Looks fun, how it feels is totally another story.

re: Ballet anyone?

Ah ballet *sits and is drawn into magical past experiences*

ok lol im back from my nostalgic dream. I remember seeing an aniversary performance at the Staller Center at SUNY Stony Brook one year. It was absolutly amazing! They performed Balanchine-esque choreography to 80's and 90's style music, although they alternated with some classics, liek Stars and Stripes, and West Side Story. I can still see the girl with the red pointe shoes and balck tights...twas insane!

Giselle and Sleeping Beauty definatly qualify as my favorites. I always, always wanted to dance in them. I used to love Nutcracker; my cousin was always Clara/Sugar Plum Fairy/Dew Drop/etc in Seiskea's performances, and then I started dancing it, but I got sooooo sooo sick of it!

Ohh dear...I need to go hold my pointe shoes...be right back!

Peter is well, Danish. I do not really know how to explain him other than that. I knew him peripherially when I knew Erik but he was till single & was JUST starting w choreographing. Becoming the AD of the NYCB has not been as rewarding for him as he prob thought. Just my opinion.

re: Ballet anyone?

Like Peter said to me not long ago. "I'm still here!"
I think he deserves a lot more credit than he gets.
I loved him as a dancer and I like him as a person a lot.

I just read in today's Washington Post that ABT's production of Swan Lake is being taped for a future PBS telecast.

re: Ballet anyone?

Wonderful sets and costumes. Just too bad it's not the old David Blair production. The McKenzie choreography and staging - not so great.

re: Ballet anyone?

Totally agree with you there, Glebb. Kevin's a good overall artistic director of ABT, but the ballets he choreographs (or borrows from) sometime leave a lot to be desired.

Let's hope Gillian Murphy is taped as Odette/Odile.
Her performances as Odile is explosive.

re: Ballet anyone?

i think I was one of the few fans of Erik Bruhn's version- With a Black Queen in stead of Von Rothbart- Lot of people felt it changed the story too much- but like Erik usta say " well the Prince DOES have this thing about his mother..." I felt the Black Queen emphasized that.

re: Ballet anyone?

Glebb, Gillian indeed danced the lead in Swan Lake. I was at the performance last night (taped for PBS). She was amazing, especially as Odile. Angel was great (as usual)!!! They cut some parts out in order to fit into the 2.5 hour time frame. I'm sure people didn't notice, but since I had seen this version before I was very aware of what was missing. I might add that the corps de ballet swans were wonderful as well. I'm looking forward to seeing this on PBS. I don't always agree with the dance critic at the Washington Post, but I felt her review of this production was accurate.

Who played the very Elizabeth I looking Queen?

I was a super for ABT at Kennedy Center when I was a young teen and I stood in the on stage balcony with the horn to herald the entrances in Act III. I almost missed my cue for the entrance of the Queen who was played by Lucia Chase. I was totally watching her in the wings and not the conductor.

Georgina Parkinson. Frederic Franklin played the King.

It really is a sumptuous production.

re: Ballet anyone?

Sure is. I've seen it twice from the front and once from backstage at the MET.
Of course Georgina is one of the great Lady Capulets.
Did you ever see Freddy F. play Madge in La Sylphide?
" ...the happiness in the tune convinces me that I'm not afraid."

re: Ballet anyone?

No I haven't. I've seen both Victor Barbee (nice guy) and Guillaume Graffin perform the role of Madge.

One of my new favorites, up and coming star of ABT, Herman Cornejo. Can that guy leap!!! I remember seeing him in the corp when he first joined the company about 5 years ago and knew he would rise among the ranks fairly quickly.
