Glebby, tonight is JEWELS.
Such a pretty ballet.
Balanchine. Faure, Stravinsky and Tschaikovsky.
One of my very favorites...

Addy at the ballet :)

What I wouldn't give to be seeing JEWELS right now.
What a ground breaking three acter it is! Imagine a three act ballet with no plot. I hear they are using the original set designs again. If so, someone made a smart decision. :)
I still get chills when I think of Stephanie Saland in the Violette Verdy (bracelet) solo. I adore Faure!
Then there's RUBIES which can stand on it's on - created for Villella and McBride. What about the gorgeous pas de deux in Diamonds?
Can't wait to read your review Addy!

It's always such a pleasure to view ballets through your eyes, Glebby... :) I certainly hope Addy is enjoying herself with the performance tonight. Tuesday's performance was reviewed in the paper today. But I'd rather hear Addy's review...

Hmmm, not a glowing review in the Times.
I'm glad I saw JEWELS with first, second, third and fourth generation casts.
On the other hand I always like to see a new cast and then decide for myself. Often I completely disagree with the reviews.
Hope Addy had a good time.

Found this old thread that mentioned Celia Franca.

From the Toronto Star 02/20/07 - Grande dame of ballet
Celia Franca was elegant and beautiful to the end. The founder of the National Ballet of Canada died Monday, Feb. 19 at age 85.

With determination, Celia Franca founded the National Ballet and was its artistic director for 24 years. As Karen Kain says, 'she was ferocious in her quest for high standards'

Quote seems to politely reflect what some here mentioned but she did shape ballet in Canada for decades.

A striking women if I do say so myself.

Ballet!

Funny story, I went to get a pedicure last week. The lady took a look at my bare feet and said "you have ballerina feet." For those of you that dance, you know that was NOT a compliment!

To see, I love the classics - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beuaty, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Giselle, Fiebird and of course, I still get goosebumps after all these years when I see the Nutcracker around the holidays....

RIP Celia Franca. What a striking woman.

Thanks for posting that about Celia. Wow this thread is two years old, and ironically Glebb mentioned Celia a couple of pages back.

I loved this thread... thanks for bumping it!
Glebby's post on page one made me laugh.

Thank you for posting about Celia. What a beautiful picture of her.

I was going through the NYCB schedule for a Spring subscription. So many wonderful choices! Including, once again, JEWELS.

But, the ballet of the year will be the one in Chicago in October!

I hear you Addy!! I loved reading those old posts.

I'm considering a trip to Chicago, especially since Giselle is one of my favorite ballets.

Consider it, consider it!

I can't think of a better reason to go than a Glebb-staged GISELLE.

I should have said, "there's a good possibility that I'd make a trip to Chicago." It all depends on the dates.

I worked with Celia Franca several times in the 70s and 80s. She always staged "Offenbach in The Underworld" and "Pineapple Poll" for Joffrey.
May she rest in peace.

This is a ridiculously lame question, but if anyone would have the answer, it would be you guys. I have to do a presentation on Agnes de Mille next week - how is Rodeo pronounced? Ro-dee-oh. Ro-DAY-oh. Please don't laugh.
