re: Ballet anyone?

There's an interesting (and rather sad) article about the lack of quality in the orchestras performing for ballets. The icing on the cake was the noisy audience members. I'll be going there (Kennedy Center) next week for the New York City Ballet's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I can only hope it will be better than this!

re: Ballet anyone?

Here comes a sad confession:

I never really liked ballet until I saw Billy Elliot!
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

That was a great article. Thanks, Mamie.

re: Ballet anyone?

Mamie, I wouldn't worry about the audiences in DC for the ballet. As a matter of fact, I have yet to encounter audience rudeness at anything I've seen in DC. I'm actually on my way to the matinee of "Carnival!".

re: Ballet anyone?

Honestly, I find the Washington audiences--for the most part--a bit on the sedate side. When I saw Hairspray at the KC, I felt like we were the only ones who understood that we were at a comedy! (I know this isn't about ballet, sorry.)

The big exception was last December when I sat next to two teenagers (at Movin' Out) who carried on a loud conversation throughout the entire first act (despite requests to keep quiet).

Finally, during intermission, Caldwell B. Cladwell turned to the man sitting beside them and asked, "Are they with you?" The man nodded. "Their behavior has been abominable. I have a four-year-old and a ten-year-old who know how to behave better at the theatre than these two."

The girls did not utter a sound during Act II. re: Ballet anyone?

re: Ballet anyone?

OMG, Miss Pennywise you just reminded me of a couple in front of me at "Movin' Out". They were trying to have a conversation over the sound of the band. After awhile I told I told them both to shut up!! You would have thought they would know better as they were adults.

re: Ballet anyone?

How dare that couple or the girls next to me SPEAK in the presence of RASTA!

re: Ballet anyone?

This sense of entitlement by people as of late is getting on my nerves. Don't even get me started about the woman I encountered at the grocery store yesterday with a whole weeks worth of groceries in the 10 items or less line! Believe you me, I said something (especially since I only had two things).

re: Ballet anyone?

That sense of entitlement thing is very annoying, but SPEAKING while RASTA is on stage is grounds for excommunication...or worse.

They're treasures.

I need to print them out before they're lost to time. And BWW archives.

PalJoey, thank you for finding this treasure! I completely forgot that I had started this particular thread. I also believe this was the thread that began my ballet correspondence with Mark. For one brief moment he was here, and then I realized.... re: Ballet anyone?
