Beyonce Lip-synched.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 2:32amA genuine question because I don't know--when a singer lip-synches--do you just mouth the words[like most drag queens] or actually sing along to your song?

I've never seen so many "I don't care that she lip-synched" statements in my life. If it was any other singer, they'd be ripped to shreds. For some reason, this woman (who nothing extraordinary if you ask me) can get away with anything. It's almost like her and Jay Z rule the world.
It also reminds me of a VMA incident from about 12 years ago. Chris Rock hosted; Britney Spears performed and right before she did, he said something juvenile, lame, and unfunny like, "are you ready for some lip synching? i said are you ready for some LIP SYNCHING?" Yet, later in that very same evening TLC performed, totally lip-synched and he had nothing to say ... not at all.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 2:58pmWhy is it okay for some singers to lip synch without shame or being made fun of while it's totally okay for other singers to lip synch?

Posted: 1/23/13 at 3:01pmWell, it seems to me that they manage to escape ridicule that would be assigned to other people in their line of work. Don't get me started on her calculated, over dramatic (and unnecessary) removal of her ear piece ...

I think you want to get started, otherwise you wouldn't keep using ellipses.
But if you think Beyonce escapes ridicule then you must only read about her on a narrow amount of sites.

I overuse ellipses, it has nothing to do with getting started. This is a discussion board, not a brawl.
From what I've read on this site and a couple of others, I see more people defending the lip synching than ridiculing it. I find that annoying, considering many singers who lip-synch are ripped to shreds and not defended in the way she is ... ellipsis.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 3:11pmIn sheer terms of looking at what kind of work Beyonce turns out and what kind of work Britney turns out (not to mention what kind of offstage antics each one gets into), I wouldn't even put the two of them in the same category.

Oh, make no mistake, I'm not defending Spears by any stretch of the imagination; she's a disaster and possibly the most untalented thing I've ever witnessed. I'm simply saying, if people are going to comment and judge and ridicule a lip-synch, do it across the board. Don't say it's okay for one and not for another; that seems unfair to me. There are a plethora of things to hate about a Spears performance aside from her not singing live.
Beyonce is considered by many (not me) to be an extraordinary, out of this world vocalist. She's fine in my opinion; nothing exceptional, but that's just me. So, to lip-synch while others did not, to be so overly dramatic about it (ear piece move) and to not own it while people are willing to say, "oh, it's okay she lip-synched" just annoys me.

Richard Blanco, the inaugural poet (who is the most huggable poet since, well...ever) says "I did not lip-synch my poem!"

Except it has been other singers. And they weren't ripped to shreds.
I'm simply saying, if people are going to comment and judge and ridicule a lip-synch, do it across the board.
I think the topic is this particular performance, not all types of performances. I do think there are specific performances where lip-syncing is justified, such as a Presidential Inauguration, and fall into a slightly different classification than perhaps a pop concert, SNL appearance, or a Superbowl halftime show. But if you believe all performances should be treated equal then by all means, get your panties in a twist and be bored or whatever about how everyone should think like you. Across the board.

"I just read in our local paper that the band was miming-never heard of that before."
Really? It happened at Obama's 1st inauguration as well. Yo Yo Ma speaks of it from this NY Times article:
“I really wanted to do something that was absolutely physically and emotionally and, timing-wise, genuine,” Mr. Ma said. “We also knew we couldn’t have any technical or instrumental malfunction on that occasion. A broken string was not an option. It was wicked cold.”
“What we were there for,” he said, “was to really serve the moment.”
That's all this is about. It's usually wicked cold during an inauguration, and the occasion is so important that they can't afford to screw up - so they do what they must - and they serve the moment. They're not playing their instruments in the following link, but I still find the moment quite stirring.

Posted: 1/24/13 at 12:25amThere's a difference between making a crack against someone who legit can't sing, but is made up like they can and someone who can sing very well choosing to lip sync for whatever reason. It was Beyonce's voice, not Beyonce's voice put through an autotuner because she can't sing as if she's Britney Spears who legit can barely sing. Can you imagine her nerves and had she ****ed up at all it would have lived on with her until she died.
