Thought I'd share this. Very interesting. When (or is it ever) Okay to "out" someone?
"Here's a hypothetical: What if you know a certain GOP congressman, let's just say from Illinois, is gay... and you know this because one of your friends, a journalist for a reputable network, told you in no uncertain terms that he caught that GOP congressman and his male roommate in the shower... together. Now they could have been good friends just trying to conserve water. But there's more. What if this congressman has also been caught by TMZ cameras trolling gay bars?
"Now what if you know that this very same guy, the darling of the GOP, has also voted against repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, opposed the repeal of DOMA, is against gay marriage; and for the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would add language to the US Constitution banning gay marriage and would likely strike down every gay rights law and ordinance in the country? Are we still not allowed to out him?
"Let me ask another question. Doesn't the media have an OBLIGATION to expose his hypocrisy? If he had done something so hypocritical and he wasn't gay, wouldn't we demand journalists do their job? But they can't... because we won't let them. you're not allowed to out ANYONE, we tell them. We've created a situation where even though news organizations know this guy is gay, they can't report it because he hasn't said so on Twitter." - CBS News reporter Itay Hod, writing on his Facebook page last night.

The answer for when it's okay is paragraph two.
The Frank rule, unofficial but oft-cited, is that if your record shows supporting homophobia then you are fair game to be outed.
BTW how did that journalist who told this guy just happen to come across the congressman and another man in a shower? Was it in the Congressional gym? There aren't many options to bear witness to that image.
It's perfectly ok to out him when he is actively harming the community he doesn't want to be a member of (but is). Out that mofo...
God, he's hot, though...
The best point, though: What if he was completely opposed to illegal immigration, granting an amnesty, and wanted to throw the book at anyone found employing illegal immigrants... and then it was discovered that he employed several illegal immigrants himself. Would it be ok to expose his hypocrisy?
I doubt anyone would argue that it's his private business and the only way the public has a right to know is if he announces it on his own terms...
This article has gotten surprising traction. These stories about Aaron Schock have been around since he was first elected, and Itay was really just musing about journalism and whether journalists had a responsibility to discuss sexual orientation when hypocrisy is involved. (Obviously he feels the answer is yes. So do most of us.)
But in the article, Itay presents no first-hand knowledge or even sources willing to do on the record.
At least, not yet.
I imagine there's a good amount of money and power dissuading a true "outing" of Schock and other similarly closeted members of the GOP. But the media needs to grow some balls and stop being safe.
God, he's hot, though...
No, he's not. UGLY INSIDE. UGLY OUTSIDE.
^This!!!
He turns my stomach.
Repulsive.

I do think he's a hypocrite....yet still attractive.
He screams 'Self Loathing Fag'
IMO
^^ This!!
But isn't the boyfriend guilty as well?
Of course. I doubt anyone on the right would even really care. Look at Matt Drudge. Everyone knows he is gay but really don't care. These type of self loathing gays seem to think it's alright to vote against your own personal interest in your political life but their 'private life' is a different story. If they can not be out and proud and happy than no one can.

If you want to live in the closet, I respect that because not everyone can or wants to be out. However, when you actively try to harm gay people and you bash them for power, profit, or positions among people who hate them, you're fair game. When asked why he doesn't support gay marriage he responded "Um, well, I just haven't." He deserves to be exposed.

Although I find this idiot despicable, doesn't a member of congress have the charge to promote the views of his constituents? So if his people are against gay rights, marriage, etc., then isn't he compelled to vote that way, whatever his personal beliefs? Of course a man of character would come out and say, "As a gay man, I'm disappointed that my constituency doesn't support..." and so on.
Well that's been the question that has haunted the US since immediately following the Revolution and the institution of our governing structures. It's been the central divide in American political thought from the get-go: should we be ruled by majority, or ruled by leaders elected to make choices for us?
doesn't a member of congress have the charge to promote the views of his constituents?
No, there is no such "charge," either for senators or representatives, not in the Constitution and not in established law.
There is reelection, however, and representatives are up for reelction every two years.
So they generally live in fear. He must live in a closet of terrors.
And loud plaids.
