my Fair lady, Deh Vieni non Tardar is what I'm working on next.
My teacher is no champion piano player, but she's pretty good. She has a bit of trouble with Vedrai Carino, but so far there hasn't been a trainwreck.
My school's newspapaer was doing a centerfold on kids with special talents (sky diving, etc) and I was chosen to write about my opera singing. I felt special

Question for the lyrics out there:
If I wanted an upbeat broadway song for soprano for those oh so fabulous college auditions, do you all think that "I Could Have Danced All Night" would be okay, or is it overdone?
#53re: Calling all Lyrics! (Sopranos, that is)
Posted: 10/24/06 at 1:48pmOverdone and cliched. If you're looking for something in that style, try The Night They Invented Champagne from Gigi.

The funny thing about "I Could Have Danced All Night" is that every opera star (Birgit Nillson, Angela Gheorghiu, Maira Callas, even Tebaldi) when wanting to sing an "American Song" in their recitals, they would choose that one. I never understood why. Is it because it's more operatic than say, everything else? Anyway, just though it was funny.
Maybe try looking at something from the early Operetta's, like Babes in Toyland or Showboat!Think of Jeanette MacDonald. Hope that helps a bit! Good luck!

...mmm good thinking...
The Gigi one would be especially good...
Who knew finding an upbeat song would be so difficult????
Thanks for the advice everyone!!!
I will continue my never-ending search.

Posted: 10/25/06 at 10:15pmIt is annoying. I had to find upbeats last year, but my search proved successful.

What were a couple of upbeats that you found, if you are willing to share?
It's kind of annoying... sopranos have all the great ballads, but when it comes to upbeat...
NOTHING.
Grr.

I've been declared a dramatic soprano today. I'm a lyric at heart, though!

Aww.
UPBEATS
Much More-The Fantasticks
Song of Me-Starting Here, Starting Now
The Beauty Is-The Light in the Piazza
What's the Use of Wondrin'-Carousel (is that an upbeat?)
That's all I remember for now.

Thank you so much!!

I like to think that as a lyric soprano, we have the flexibility to branch off into more dramatic as well as coluratura roles, and still be a lyric. Par example, as a lyric, you can sing Violetta, but we also have the capacity to sing Tosca or Turandot. GO US!!!
Had you been labeled a Wagnerian soprano, it would've been different.

Posted: 10/27/06 at 11:01pmYou're right. Specifically, I've been labeled a dramatic coloratura (I didn't realize I didn't say that before!). Lady Macbeth, here I come!

The Mezzos are beating us!!!
justagirl- what would a dramatic coloratura role be? Something like Gilda in rigoletto? I can't say I'm familiar with that phrasing. But anyway, yay for you!!!

Eh, Cleopatra in "Giulio Cesare," Queen of the Night, etc. It's an "acrobatic voice with powerful dramatic qualities." Who knew?
So the Mezzos absolutely can't beat us. Keep it going, guys!

Posted: 10/29/06 at 10:10amLyrics are awesome. The only bad thing about being a lyric is that the only musical theatre roles written for them are ingenues. I, unfortunately, don't look like an ingenue, so I've never been cast in a lyric lead before.

yeah, that happens a lot. In fact, the reason I switched my interests from Musical Theatre to Classical was because of the lack of roles written for my voice type. Also, it's more fun (and interesting) to say you're an Opera singer
#70re: Calling all Lyrics! (Sopranos, that is)
Posted: 10/29/06 at 8:02pmI'm known as an opera singer whether I say it or not, even in musical theatre cirles, probably because of my mediore belt. But I usually like singing musical theatre better. Anyone have sound clips?

Um, I'm not really trained in anything yet.
My parents tried for years to steer me away from the arts (long story), but I'm getting back on track... I am a soprano, but have a wide range. I sing musical theatre, opera, and pop.

Being a dramatic soprano makes me sooo happy. :)
I just randomly join the lyric page just so I could post with some sopranos...
Just being a Soprano is my life. I went through an identity crisis once where I thought I was a mezzo... yeah it just didn't work out.
I'm way too much of a Prima Donna to be a mezzo.
#73re: Calling all Lyrics! (Sopranos, that is)
Posted: 10/29/06 at 10:37pmThat happened to me too! My teacher last year claimed that my voice could be changing and I could be a mezzo...but my new teacher shot that down in a heartbeat.
#74re: Calling all Lyrics! (Sopranos, that is)
Posted: 10/29/06 at 10:47pmMy voice changed so much. I once was a mezzo. I currently consider myself a Soprano 1 1/2. It depends on what condition my voice is in for me to be either.
