The other thing about being a soprano that I particularly enjoy is that we can develop into belters also... I'd like to see a mezzo/belter try to develop a lyric range... *evil grin*

Posted: 10/29/06 at 11:40pmI can't seem to get a belt range. My belt sucks, but I have a decent mix.

Posted: 10/30/06 at 5:42amUsed to have an okay belt, but it's sort of diminished since I stopped really working it. I have a nice mix and chest voice though.

I can't belt... at all.
That's because I learned to belt by ear. So now I just fake-belt, instead of actually belting. It's impossible for me to sing in my chest voice... it sounds horrible, and hurts like a bitch.
Give me my high Bb and C's any day.

Posted: 10/30/06 at 6:44pmI fake belt! But my crazy voice teacher (I have 2, an awesome one and a crazy one) made me use my chest voice today. It got better, but it's still not great or even really very good.

Yeah... mine just... sucks. It makes me sad that I can't actually belt, but it'll be better for me when I'm an opera singer. C'est la vie.
I can still 'belt' a pretty mean song though.

Posted: 10/30/06 at 10:18pmI don't even want to go into singing as a career, even though I've kind of made it my life. It's too competitive and I basically know that I could never get a job.

Aww you guys... don't give up on your belts just yet!!
I've been a lyric for a long time and JUST discovered my belting voice recently when I was asked to understudy the role of Louise in Gypsy... and since then I have gotten one fantastic show since then (Rocky Horror) and a really close callback (Sally in Cabaret)...
You can do it!! *cheers*

Well, we had a sever lack of talent in our school. In rehearsals I sang everything (besides the title song) an octave up, and it surprisingly worked well enough. But the day before, they decided that Dolly wouldn't sing high (which I understand), and so I was forced to go into belting mode. Scary!
But I did get to wear the hat. Several awesome hats, to be exact.

Well that was dumb of whoever made that decision. Way to pressure an actor.
But hey, the hats should always make up for that kind of stuff.

i'm only in high school too, butby the way things are going, my teacher and I are pretty sure that i'm a lyric.
i just met with a college counselor about music colleges, and I'm getting so exited! She listened to a tape of me and said that my Mozart arias were wonderful, so my teacher picked an aira from Lucia Silla, which i've never heard of before.
Also, I'm having some trouble finding an english art/classical song that I really like. Anyone have some suggestions?

Posted: 11/3/06 at 11:23amThere's Monica's Waltz or The Black Swan from The Medium. I'm also in high school, but I'm pretty sure I'm a lyric.

art songs... not from operas.
The Crucifixion by Samuel Barber is always good. It shows you can do modern music that's a little weird/different. It's the song I'm using for College auditions.
And I'm pretty excited, just got my audition CD's done to send to Cincinnatti, DePaul, Oberlin, and Manhattan.
Now... onto the applications.

Posted: 11/3/06 at 2:51pmGood suggestion! I'm thinking of applying to a lot of the same schools (in two years) good luck!

Don't do Black Swan... that's one that I'm doing!! haha.
But if you really want to, I have to warn you, it's a BIG song. Very hard to master... I'm having problems with it, and I've been singing lyric for awhile... it's not terribly high (G, occasional A above high C), but it definitely stays up there for a long period of time, and maintaining that is hard.
Just my two cents.

Posted: 11/4/06 at 6:47amThe music in "The Medium" is beautiful. It's one of the only english operas I can listen to without cringing. My teacher was looking at Monica's Waltz for me, however, a lot of the auditions I have coming up specifically say they want undergrads and below to sing art songs, not arias (boo.)I don't see how they can think that "Pieta Signore" is a more appropriate piece for my age than something like Vedrai Carino.

Yeah Cincinnati won't let undergrads do opera songs. I was pissed, because I hate doing the Crucifixion... and Fair Robin is the only English song I like.
and can we say that Michigan's application is a bitch???

Hi everyone, I actually have some questions. I just started taking voice lessons a few weeks ago, so I am new to the terminology used. First off, in voice lessons my teacher only seems to focus on my soprano. I want to to work on belting too. Does this seem unusual? Also, what is mix? I guessing it is a blend of the head and chest voices, but I don't know for sure. Do different techniques focus on different things? I believe I am learning classical technique. She is focusing on vowel sounds.
Back to more soprano talk, my voice teacher referred to me as a coloratura. In the threads, I've noticed terms such as lyric, dramatic, and such in reference to soprano. Would anyone care to break these down? I saw the definition for dramatic, but I don't quite understand it. Thanks for the advice!
