My family has a huge 4th of July Tradition. It is like a small-town shindig right in the middle of Los Angeles.
My parents (well, now my mom's) house is right across the street from a huge firework show. They actually bought the house 30+ years ago because they saw a "For Sale" sign on the night they went to the show.
Each year, there is a huge block party. People from the Exchange Club, City (my dad was a former City Councilman and President of the Exchange Club), Temple, family friends, and neighbors come over and do everything from sing in the back yard (with guitars and tambourines) to line dancing in the front yard. My mom actually hires a square dance caller for line dancing instructions!
There is home-made ice cream, bubbles, ping pong, a cold keg of beer, and food galore.
I usually hang out by the keg and just try to figure out how I was born into a family that has both line dancing and folk songs going at the same time. And, I ogle the fireman and policemen that drive by all afternoon.
Then, at sundown we all park ourselves on our front lawn, and watch the firework show that goes on across the street.
Last year we had about 100-150 people. This year looks like the same turnout.
I need to take the 5th off just to recover from the 4th!
That sounds like so much fun, Y!

YWIW: Wow, what a celebration! :o)
You know, today I was missing the parades in my small hometown. I remember marching when I was in Girl Scouts and also as a part of the flag corp. I remember everyone in our tiny town lining the streets, the fire department providing little plastic cups of ice cream that came with wooden a paddle/spoon. Flag flying everywhere. The march to the cemetery. The gun salute, the trumpeter in the distance playing taps.
And the pride of the Veterans as they marched by. The look on their face of pride--and memories. That day those men weren't dads and grandpas, they were military men who had served their country.
I'm glad I had those parades as a part of my growing up.

As a child, my brother and I would go to the Ambassadors Residence for 4th of July celebrations. Only he and I could go because you needed a US passport to get in, so my parents couldn't go. They had games and food. It was so much fun! I wonder if they still hold the picnic.
Wonderful traditions.
For a couple of reasons I missed my 'traditional' plans this year. And miss them, I did.
Hope you all got to enjoy pretty fireworks!
I love the sparkly ones the most.

Wow, Cookie. Fireworks AND Aaron Lazar. That is marvelous.
Addy, I had a very boring 4th.
Harris...read your cows a nursey rhyme or two and send them to the barn. It's time for the cows to go home.
Anyone else too wound up to sleep?

Cookie,
When I come back in the Fall, can you arrange fireworks to celebrate?

They're my favorite. The ones that twinkle in the sky.
