With the proposed FCC rule change allowing texting and phone conversations during flight, it appears that public sentiment is against this...

I can't stand the idea of sitting next to a chatterbox on every flight.
And, I like the fact that my flight time (especially business travel) is truly 'personal'. A break from the constant work demands. (At least by phone).

I like being able to use 'electronic devices' while in flight, but cell phone conversations? No Way!

What is your opinion?

completely agree. I take the train into NYC all the time. I usually have a fabulous busy day of shows and running around...exhausting! On the 3 hour train ride home I just want to sit back, relax and look out the window, as does most everyone else it seems. This one time, a woman sat behind me and talked loudly on the phone the entire three hours. It was mind-numbingly annoying. If the rest of the train hadn't been packed I would have moved.

The thing that really amazed me was that, in all the silence around her on the train, she was completely unaware that she was the only person making a sound.

No, I do not don't want this on planes.

The best advance in travel in the past 10 years is the Quiet Car on the Amtrak Acela.

Cell phones users should be segregated, like smokers.

I would hate to be sitting next to a chatterbox on a long bus, train or plane ride. I normally have to deal with this on my commute to work every day. There is always someone having a long, drawn out conversation. By the time I reach my destination I know this person's business better than my own. No one exercises discretion anymore.

I despise our local commuter bus company, DeCamp. However, I am very grateful that they do not permit cell phone conversations on their buses. It's about the only thing they do right.

Please NO

I don't want to sit next to a loud mouth person which is even worse when I can only hear half the conversation. Now step that up when it is in a language I cannot understand and it is even more annoying.

Bring a book, read a magazine, sleep, play games on your phone but please no cell phones on planes!

I read somewhere that Amazon was behind this. They thought people should be able to use a Kindle on planes. So they backed some research which revealed that not only kindles, but cellphones where not an interference on planes.

I can't think of anything worse. I already plan never to fly again if possible, but this seals the deal even tighter.

NOOOOOOO!

Quiet cars on Amtrak and NJ Transit are a godsend. Amtrak does a great job of it, but NJ Transit is hit or miss, and they only are on rush hour trains. I have a two hour commute each way, which is alot of time to deal with someone yelling at their boyfriend. If I'm feeling snarky, I like to give advice like "he just doesnt seem that into you".

I agree it is a bad idea as well. I know I am guilty of having a smartphone as well as like a million other people. But, I feel like cell phones are taking over the world and people are just accepting it. No, they don't need to become the norm everywhere. I'll admit when I heard that they were putting cell reception into some of the subway stations in NYC, I was a little mad. And that's not even as far as a plane ride.

I wonder if there is some way to petition the FCC?

Even the Flight Attendants union is against this!

I will never get on another plane if I am am forced to sit next to someone who talks on a cell phone.

Why is this being allowed to happen?!

This is happening because the 450 pound woman next to you and the people whose children kick the back of your seat for 12 hours are not aggravating enough.

The only consolation is if this does come to pass you know it won't be free or even cheap. The plane will have to have some sort of relay device on it, you wouldn't be able to get a hit from an actual cell tower at 30,000 feet and 400 miles an hour. Somebody said some European airlines already have it and it costs in the range of $3.00 per minute and about $1 per text. So hopefully it will be too prohibitively expensive for most people to actually make use of.

Let's hope so. I definitely would not pay to use the service if it was that expensive. I opted not to pay for internet on my flight to Los Angeles last year because it was too expensive. I just entertained myself with other stuff. Like the tv I had on the back of the seat in front of me or looking through the Sky Mall catalog.

I read that the Chairman doesn't support the use of cell phones, so we'll see how far it actually goes.

I just heard on the news that decisions may be made today.

Please, NO!!

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas this year is a BAN ON CELL PHONES ON PLANES!

I've been a good girl all year. Please make this happen.

Signed,
Addy

If someone is going to make a dime from it, it will pass.

And I will want to punch someone in the throat.

Dear Santa,

I promise that if you give Addy her wish, I won't punch anyone in the throat.

Another ridiculous idea! Lets not forget that some people use cell phones to blow things up too.

Well, I think the whole point of allowing cell phone use is that it isn't the danger that it used to seem, and as I remember all devices will still have to be turned off during take-off and landing. If cellphones were really a credible threat in airplanes I doubt they'd be allowed on at all. I mean, we're still all taking off our shoes for scanning because of one wackjob once.

My worry isn't about the use of cell phones being a danger to the flight.

My concern is having to spend hours stuck on a plane with a blabbermouth who doesn't shut up.

Regarding the shoe thing: TSA Pre-check is the best!
