Wait...early decision or action?
I'm a sophomore, but my sister's a senior, so I've kind of been getting caught up in the college stuff too. It doesn't help that I go to a prep school disguised as a yeshiva. If you really love a school and you know it's where you want to be, apply early. If you're not sure, don't unless it's non-restrictive early action.

right now, i'm applying to 7 schools, i think. i always wonder if its enough though...
Emerson
BosCo
CCM
NYU (cap21)
UARTs
U of Miami
U of Central Florida
all for musical theatre. only the first 5 are serious ones, though. my mom wants me to at least apply to florida schools (where i live currently) but i hate florida and MUST get out. Emerson's my number one.

As of now I feel pretty certain to say that I'm applying to: Yale, Columbia, UMich, and CUNY Hunter. Emory and NYU (A&S, I just really want to apply to a straight theater program at Tisch, but I don't think I want a BFA) are up there too. But then there's my crazy list of: Carnegie Mellon, Williams, Byrn Mawr, Colgate, Bates, Haverford, Brandies, Ithaca and Smith. SUNY Purchase, New Paltz, Buffalo, and Albany.
I'm still trying to narrow it down and it's already September.

mmm... these are some of the schools I'm thinking of applying to:
NYU (I would love to go here for theatre, but somehow I don't think I'd get in, so I will probably just apply for history or government or whatever I decide I want to do)
Georgetown (my sister goes here and is making me apply... haha)
Harvard
Emerson
Boston University, maybe
Wesleyan, maybe
Columbia, maybe
Barnard, maybe
USC, maybe
University of Washington (safety school)
I don't know. We'll see. Luckily, I have very good grades, so I don't have to worry about that a lot... and Harvard is just for kicks. haha.

Oh, god. I'm so nervous about all of this. College, bah!
I've decided I'm moving to New York(I've been there multiple times, and I love it) with my friend right after High School, regardless of if I get into college right away or not. However, I am REALLY hoping I get into one.
So far, I've looked at Tisch, Juliard (might as well aim high), Fordham, Marymount, AMDA, and a few 2 year conservatories.
If any of you know any other good colleges (4 year university or 2 year conservatory, i haven't decided yet) for acting or drama in New York let me know.

Posted: 9/3/06 at 9:42amAll I can say is that a LOT of you have way too many reach schools on your lists and that if you don't adjust them, you're likely to be very disappointed when decision time comes. Having gone through this process a few years ago, I understand how selective it is and you really need to have an excellent line up of schools when you're applying for drama or MT programs. The admissions rates rival that of Ivy League schools, especially for MT. If anyone wants any advice, feel free to PM me. I'm at Tisch and have friends at many other programs across the country.

to everyone:
no one is saying that you're not talented enough to get into these schools, and professionals can give their advice/opinions all they want, but the truth comes down to statistics. there are enough people on this board alone applying to the same schools to completely fill up their freshman MT classes. and there's no doubt that many many people here are incredibly talented.
what i'm saying (and i believe erinrebecca is, too) is that purely STATISTICALLY, you should have AT LEAST one safety school on your list. from one school i had completely positive audition feedback (i was SENT a copy of my audition sheet, they allow you to request it), and if i had just looked at those comments i would have said "why on earth did i not get accepted???" -- but on the top of the paper it said "too many sopranos, cannot accept. encourage to audition 2006-2007 season". this is seriously selective, and most of the time it doesn't come down to talent. at all. it comes down to numbers.
this is my THIRD TIME going through this, so i know what i'm talking about. a lot of the whole BFA audition process comes down to numbers and statistics, not talent or capability. take that for what it's worth, but i know that i, for one will definitely have a backup plan this year.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: this post is really for people who are thinking they want to audition for MT/Acting programs...though it's good to have academic safeties as well!! sorry for any confusion!!

Posted: 9/3/06 at 6:12pmSporti--I agree but for many of my schools I'm not applying as a theater major; I'm applying as a regular academic major, probably as a computer science major. And I have academic safeties, although some are actually top notch performance schools. Also, most of my schools have a theater arts curriculum largely based on history and theory or have a theater studies major(my ideal major) or have the oppurtunity to design your own major so that I could major in theater history or something to that degree.

i*heart*fame -- i was speaking mostly to the MT/Acting folks (just because most of the posts i read were along those lines) so i'm sorry if i freaked you out at all!!!
it sounds like you have REALLY good options/backups that you're working on....it's awesome that you're geting such an early start!!
i'll put a note at the bottom of that last post so it's not confusing anymore...sorry!

Sporti - I like the way you think. lol I, AGAIN, couldn't agree more.
A lot of times, talent isn't always the main thing that will get you accepted or rejected. You also have to take into consideration who's already at the school. If they have 10 attractve, blonde, blue eyed tenors in their present freshmen class, chances are they're not going to need another one for the new freshmen class to come. Same thing goes with girls.
So even if you know that you have a ridiculous amount of talent (which I know a lot of people on this board have, like Sporti said
), don't count on getting into that one school that you assume you'll get into because there are MANY other factors that play into putting together a freshmen class besides the talent.
But if you're gonna go for it, I say go for it big. Just make sure you have a plan to fall back on.
*claps* Job well done, Sporti. lol

this is all so scary. this whole process has me freaked out to the max. performing is all i want to do in my life and i could never ever do anything else. i'm setting my standards high because i honestly think i could get in to some of these top-rated schools, but there's always the thoughts and the people telling you to stop dreaming and find that academic backup.
it would kill me if i didn't get accepted and had to settle for a normal academic major. it would be the equivalent of giving up the dearest thing in your life.
i commend everyone who is aiming high for a MT/Acting degree at a top-notch school. it takes guts and self-confidence out the wazoo to audition for them. i wish the best of luck to everyone

comababy --
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't think we're saying that you should give up your dream!!! if i listened to that kind of advice, i wouldn't be going into BFA auditions for the third time!! there is absolutely no reason to give up your dream, we're just saying that we know how tough it is to get in places, and if you don't have a fallback plan that you can live with JUST IN CASE you don't get in anywhere, you could end up pretty unhappy. we're saying everyone should ADD a backup -- not necessary drop it all and just apply to backups.
don't give up!! don't give up!!!
and indeed, best of luck to everyone.

if performing is all you've ever wanted to do in your life, maybe college isn't for you. keep in mind, college is a time for experiencing and training. not performing.
as a matter of fact i don't think there is such a thing as performing. for actors anyway. we should always be up there experiencing. if we're being true, anyway. not everyone is, which is unfortunate.

Yea Kenmarksnj what you are saying is so true...most of a actors lfe is about experience and training, the only time you get to perform is at auditions or if you get into a show...
but comababy..good luck, youll do great and dont worry about it...you dont need ot go to the best schools in order to make it in MT...you could still go to a school that is 'ok' and greatly succeed...and you may succeed more at the 'ok' school, than you would at the best MT school in america...
the problem is EVERYBODY wants to go to these schools...and im not sure who said it before, but talent isnt the only factor, its also about looks, and they cant have girls or gys who look alike, and also they need to accept atleast two black students for the diversity factor....so everything is not about talent, you could be the best of the best and still not get in..which sucks, but its reality...
Dont let yourslef down if you dont get into your top school, i dont its about the school your at...i think its about who you are as a person...and how you chose to take advantage of your school life....so good luck!...and youll do fine!...and plus im in the same situation as you..doing all this applications and organising auditions etc...so i can understand what your going through..and so can many other people on this board..
good luck

I KNOW I can't get into any IVY leagues, but do you really need them?
I know I can get into a very good public school (way less muhla) with just as good as a theater program. So everyone: NYU is not the only place where you can learn about theater

This isn't directly related to college as it more so musical theatre in general.
My jazz teacher this summer graduated from CAP21 at Tisch a year ago. She has been auditioning like crazy and has actually made it pretty far...but never gotten a job. She told us a story about how she went to a replacement call for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. She got down to the bottom 7. They cut 2 people (her and another person) and the rest got the job. Now she is an AMAZING dancer and gorgeous and would have been perfect for that show. She had a friend in that show and her told her the reason as to why they didn't cast her....She looked too much like someone already in the cast.
It just goes to show that talent is most definitely NOT everything in musical theatre (just repeating what everyone else is saying).
I didn't say this to discourage anyone. But if you don't happen to get the best BFA program...it most likely isn't because you aren't good enough. It's probably because you have blue eyes or orange hair or your voice sounds too much like another person.
I'm a senior now too and am pretty lost in this whole thing.

I would just like to re-iterate to all the people audiitoning for the top schools what Sporti and a couple others have said: A BIG PART of whether you are going to get into these schools or not is going to have to do with whether they already have "your type" in any of their other classes. It's also going to be based more on looks than people like to admit--so there are going to be a lot of fators out of your control working either for or against you at these auditions, so whatever happens does not mean you're not talented and HAVE BACKUPS!!
