Well, that sucks.

I believe it's more gothic romance and not really a horror film

I had been planning to see the very first showtime on opening day, but after reading the reviews I'll hold out a while or even catch it on dvd. I'm really pissed at the studio for misleading the audience on this one. I wouldn't be upset if they would have just advertised it as what it was, but I'll never understand intentionally misleading audiences into thinking they're getting one thing and giving them something completely different.

Mia Wasikowska is always good, so I'm still in.

I thought the writing was awful. There was a point where I couldn't believe the actors agreed to be in it after reading that script. It has gorgeous images, but the 'story' was so poorly executed that by the end I was rolling my eyes so much I thought I was going to lose them. It has little reason to have overproduced supernatural elements, they add very little to it and some CGI will be laughable in less than a decade.It has no point being a ghost story either, there is no basis for it in the plot, it is just an over hyped hook.

Another major thing that bugged me: the female characters start as strong and determined and half way through they turn into pathetic and helpless victims.

Del Toro gets praise, but I think most is for his Spanish films. A lot of his work in the US is pretty embarrassing.

Oh, the costumes are gorgeous. Stunning. So, it had something.

If you want scary, go look somewhere else. It has no scary moments. If it was aimed for teenage thrill seekers, go see Twilight. It has no romance in it either. It is just a thriller with way too much of a budget and no script.

Yeah, you *might* think about adding the word SPOILER to your post since you, y'know, give away the ending in it.

I ended up seeing it this morning and enjoyed it for what it was. While it was wrapping up, I realized that it sort of reminded me of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (with that one being a far superior film). I think if it took a few more cues from that film it would have been more successful since where it's at now, it comes off as a very disjointed story. Is it a romance? A ghost story? Horror film? It doesn't know, and although the pacing of the film is very deliberate, it doesn't fix that, which is the core problem of the film. I think all it needed was a lot more tension buildup, like in DRACULA and it would have been a vastly superior end product.

Am I the only one here who actually really liked "Crimson Peak" a lot? I knew it wasn't going to be a literal "horror film" in a traditional sense of the word. I liked the characters, story (even though we have seen this before), and most importantly, the atmosphere. Atmosphere is the most important aspect in a movie like this and it pulled it off in spades thanks to del Toro's keen eye of detail in everything.

I thought I got my money's worth on CRIMSON PEAK, because all I wanted was a parade of gorgeous sets and gorgeous costumes. I got that in spades. I also got a pile of ACTING, much of which was silly and unconvincing. Only the superb Tom Hiddleston came through with aplomb. This show won't win any awards for script or direction, but it could easily walk away with a number of tech awards next February, so very worth seeing on that score. I was never bored.
