Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Eleanor Ringel Gillespie
"An intelligent and compassionate movie, with a strong performance by Jolie."
Boston Globe, Ty Burr
"...all its good intentions and visceral emotions come curiously to naught."
Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert
"What is best about A Mighty Heart is that it doesn't reduce the Daniel Pearl story to a plot, but elevates it to a tragedy."
Chicago Tribune, Michael Phillips
"...a worthy film on a great, tragic subject."
She's totally getting an Oscar nom.
Very likely, did anyone see the movie? Any comments?
Just saw it today. It was excellent.
My friends and I didn't say a word till about 10 minutes after the credits finished. The film is very tastful and compassionate and doesn't let you just walk out and forget all of it.
Jolie performance was deeply admirable and I see no reason why she shouldn't get an Oscar nod (granted its early in the season).
Such an amazing woman, Mariene Pearl, and this film gracefully pays tribute to her and her husband.
Thanks for the review!
My local paper didn't like it, so I wasn't going to check it out. But it seems they're in the minority so I'm going to try to see this.
I saw it last night. Including us, there were 8 people in the theatre for the 9:20 showing. The film was very well done. The style of directing had the docudrama feel very much like United 93. Its the best thing I have seen Angelia Jolie do. I know its early, but she already has the nomination in my opinion and this will be a hard act to top.The Academy loves this kind of performance and I think it will play very well come award season. It came in this weekend at #10 and I am not surprised. I heard a couple in line say why would they want to see a depressing film like that? I doubt the film cost that much and I think it will be re-released around Oscar time. I think it will do okay and break even. I also think Dan Futterman did a very good job. The entire cast was good and it was in my opinion a sweet movie. It was very romantic and heartwarming, but not mushy. Anyway, I loved it and encourage everyone to see it. Other than some very mild language, I don't knw why it got such a strong rating.
I saw it today and there were only 4 people in the audience. Excellent film that is very tastefully made. Angelina Jolie is worthy of an Oscar nomination just for the scene in which she finds out her husband has died - very powerful and moving.
There were 21 people in the audience I was in last night (seems like a big crowd compared to the other people who posted in this thread, haha)
I thought it was really a great movie. I loved the style of it (kind of documentaryish), and I loved all the shots of the Pakistan city (dont want to spell the name :P ). Like, just seeing how all those people lived in that crowded city was actually kind of scary.
But Angelina Jolie totally deserves an Oscar nomination for her performance. She didn't overract (though my dad thought she did sometimes), and she didn't underract the part, she just had the character down so well. Even though she wasn't crying sometimes after she found out her husband died, you'd still see and hear all the pain she was going through. I dont know, but this was the best role I've seen her in. And she looks so much like the real Marianne Pearl!
Overall, this is the 2nd best movie I've seen so far in 2007 (the first was THE HOAX). Go see it everyone!
Critics raved but nobody came.
is this a fill in the blank thread a la mad libs?
Wait til Oscar time. The film I am sure will be rereleased and I predict a big campaign from Paramount Vantage for various awards including Best Actress. Its the 1st film I've heard of this year that is a true contender and it deserves the attention.
Jolie's performance was outstanding. As a big fan of hers since GIA, I thought this was by far her best screen performance to date. As someone mentioned earlier, the scene alone where Mariene discovers her husband is no longer alive is gut wrenching and that scene alone WILL earn her an Oscar nomination.

I very much want to see this. I respect both Jolie and Marianne Pearl and look forward to her reporting every month in Glamour (which is a surprisingly thoughtful magazine!).
I just went to see it, a great film, but not exactly what I was expecting. The Pakistani actors were fantastic, Dennis O'Hare and Angelina Jolie were also terrific, as usual.
I tried to see this last night at a multiplex in Clifton, NJ and every evening show was sold out! Settled for Knocked Up...was a little disappointed...not awful, but not up to the hype.
The supporting cast is superb too. The film often takes the focus off of Jolie and gives others a chance to shine. Denis O'Hare is very good. To echo others, it is a tasteful tribute to an innocent man and woman who made telling others people's stories their lives and the tragedy of violence. It is a simple tale. It was fascinating how they were clearly reporters who began to storyboard on dry erase boards as they were looking for Daniel-putting the pieces of the puzzle together to find him. Overall, a tribute to the power of love and perseverance in the face of senseless hatred. Dan Futterman is wonderful too. A well made film.
