I'll be honest - I had to go look this up on CNN because I thought it was some sort of sick joke that I wasn't getting at first.
That's terrible! He seemed like such a nice guy and a great father. My heart goes out to his family...
I have to say I always figured if he was going to be killed, it would be by a crocodile.

I was shocked when I saw the news - I had met him almost 3 years ago when I visited Australia. He was wonderful. How to sad to leave such a young family behind, but he died doing what he loved - interacting with nature. He will be missed.

Out of all the dangerous animals he worked with, it seems doubly upsetting that he'd lose his life to a stingray.

This is terrible news. I always found him incredibly entertaining and informative. The difference between Steve and the Grizzly Man was that Steve never for a second believed any of the wild animals he worked with were his friends. He always acknowledged they were untamed and always unpredictable. He never had any delusions about what he was doing.

My heart goes out to his family.

Am sorry the man provoked animals to get the footage he needed, there safety and well being was the last thing on his mind when he was filming.

He might have thought that he was a champion of animal rights, but the way he provoked animals was both uncalled for and dangerous.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death. I used to watch his show all the time. Along with many other people on this board, my heart goes out to his family and friends.

How can ANYONE be surprised by this news? We all knew that someday he would be killed doing this. I lost all respect for him when he dangled the baby in front of the crocodile.
It's one thing to put yourself at risk for a thrill and some fame, but to put an infant at risk for the same reason is despicable.
Yes, it is sad. Yes, he seemed like a fun character, but come on people, he was a daredevil that took amazing risks and it was just a matter of time before something like this happened.

Nearly every parent does something dangerous with their child at some point. It's just the more well-known ones who get press - look at Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. Besides, he was probably trying to get his son accustomed to the animals which I'm assuming he would've been raised around.

My dad drank an entire can of beer at a family BBQ when he was three. He was also dropped down a flight of stairs by his father. (I don't remember the story, but it wasn't as terrible as it sounds.)

Although I am sad, it was an accident waiting to happen. He simply took too many chances

What is shocking is HOW he died. It's a complete freak thing. Stingray stings are almost never fatal. It just managed to get up under his rib cage and sting him directly in the heart, puncturing his heart. Of all the ways for him to go, that IS a surprising one.

Very sad. I always admired him. His enthusiasm was contagious. And it's sad to know that lots of young children loved him and looked up to him.

If he had been a single man, no family, that would have been one thing. But once you have children you have a responsibility to them to do your best to be around. Yes, there are dangerous professions, Firefighter and Police come to mind, but being a daredevil, no matter how you try to justify it as being an educator, is not one that I would say counts as essential to society. He was an egotistical and selfish person that has left fatherless children because of his own hubris.

I am expressing my opinion on his priorities. Thrill seeking/celebrity first, parenting second. Kind of messed up, if you ask me. Just my opinion.

Sueleen - it must be so wonderful to be as perfect as you are.

Personally I found your remarks hateful and ignorant. A man died , who spent a good part of his life trying to educate people about protecting wildlife , leaving a young family and you get judgemental. Brava Bi**h.

Why did he have to put his child in harm's way to teach you about crocodiles? Didn't he have enough footage of the wildlife that was shot before he had children to last a lifetime? Again, just my opinion.
