Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:04amHe was too young and he had a lot more to teach us regarding nature. I guess the only consolation is that he died doing what he loved, but still, a horrible tragedy. SO sorry to read this.

I don't understand how people can say that he brought it upon himself.
He was just doing his job. If an actor fell off of the stage and cracked their skull open on the floor, would you say that they brought it upon themselves for being on stage? No, they were just doing their jobs. He was doing his, leave him be.

I agree with you, Zoneface. I never thought I would type those words.
Anyway, it's amazing he lasted this long.

Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:18amHow can people say he brought it upon himself? It was his job for crying out loud. I mean, the man owned a zoo! He handled animals not only because he loved animals, but because he had to. Animals are unpredictable, and this is terrible that this happened to him.

Please. If you decide to wrestle crocodiles for a living or live with bears, you are setting yourself up for an early death. In this case, he was filming a documentary on stingrays and that was the end.
The family knows.

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.
It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest and reportedly into his heart .
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the crew's boat on Batt Reef, off the coast near Cairns, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.
Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.
Tasmania Police this afternoon confirmed his wife Terri was travelling in the state at the time of the tragedy.
A spokeswoman said police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and "passed on a message relating to the death of her husband".
The Irwins have two children - a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a three-year-old son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin.
Steve Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
In an sad twist, it has been reported that his new documentary was aimed at demystifying the stingray.
Irwin's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.
Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.
Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.
"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.
A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.
"I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said.
A spokeswoman said police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and "passed on a message relating to the death of her husband".

"C'mon, and you're telling me he did it on purpose then?"
WTF, dude? I said it was not a shocker that he died an early death since he tempted fate all of the time. That is not the same as saying he did it on purpose.
Here is my original post.

Well, it's not a shocker. If you spend your life tempting nature by doing dangerous things, it's just a matter of time before you get bitten or chomped. Look at that guy who liked to live with the bears. He thought the bears were his friends and then they had him for dinner.

how could you say he brought it upon himself??? It's not like he woke up and said "hmm i think i want a stingray to kill me today"
it was his job and he loved what he did.

It's also like saying a police officer or fire fighter had it coming or brought upon himself because they were shot in the line of duty or were killed trying to fight a fire because they were doing their job.

Sorry, but if you do any of the following as a "job", you and your family should know that you are tempting fate and could end up with some bad injuries or maybe even dead. Isn't that part of the reason people do these things?
1) Race car driver
2) Live with bears
3). Wrestle crockodiles
4). Jump over the Grand Canyon on a Motorcycle or skateboard
5) Stunt man or woman
6) Sit on the back of a jumping or racing horse
7) Hang glide/sky dive, etc.

Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:51amAs saddened as I am about this, I've got to agree with jimmysf. This doesn't diminish the positive work he's done - he educates people and provoked an interest in wildlife! But stunt people, law enforcement, firefighters, mountain climbers, and yes, the Crocodile Hunter, all have voluntarily put their safety on the line and understood this when they chose that profession. Yes, it's their job, but yes, there are risks involved. His death is terrible news but it's not shocking.

Posted: 9/4/06 at 3:34amI don't mean to be insensitive, because this IS very sad -- I loved his show -- but while it was his job, you'd think he'd like, take some safety precautions when doing his job, which I never got the impression he did. We're talking about a guy who would stand there for ten minutes telling the camera how deadly and dangerous an animal is, and then go and stick his head in its mouth, for God's sake. There's nothing safe about a job like that, and he never seemed to be anything more than flippant about safety, because he was so excitable. It's great that he was so enthusiastic about his job, but that shouldn't override common sense, especially when you're dealing with extremely dangerous animals. He was unfortunately tempting fate.

It kind of feels like the end of an era. We all grew up with him, hearing jokes about him, etc. This is truly very sad
I feel so terrible for his family.

Reports here (Australia) have said that his death has possibly been recorded with his inter-action with the stingray.
He achieved fame in the U.S. long before he was known in Australia. For years people here were asked about the 'Crocodile Hunter' by Americans, most would reply "who?"

I agree with jimneysf and Type_A_Tiff...yes we know he was doing his job, loved what he was doing, and educated many people, yet he was involved with a job that had its risks, therefore it is not as big of a shock.
I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly, but people involved in this line of work have gotten hurt/attacked before, therefore you can see this kind of stuff coming. An actor falling offstage and cracking his or her skull (although it's happened before) I would say is more unexpected because it is not a risk as typical to the job of an actor; getting attacked by an animal is more common to the zookeeper or animal handler.
