Sueleen said "Irwin may have said his intent was to "teach" people, but I think he was more drawn to the thrill, the adrenalin rush and the celebrity than any sort of altruistic desire to educate people on the eating habits of wild animals."
To paraphrase a line from the original Saturday Night Live - Sueleen, you ignorant sl*t. The man inspired a whole new generation of conservationists. If he had to do wild stunts to bring attention to causes he fought for, that says more about the society in which we live. The man spent most of his life fighting for good causes, Sueleen - exactly what have you done?

Posted: 9/4/06 at 12:41pmI didn't mean to imply that risking one's life as a firefighter compared to risking one's life as a conservationist was less meaningful. I only meant that that it was a choice one made - and under any circumstance, it is tragic when there is loss of life. Period.

Marc, why are you reacting so violently? There is no reason to attack each other here......
So you don't like Sueleens opinion....so??? He has a right to it as do you. There are ways of making your point other than attacking...I just don't get it.

I think those comments deserved that reaction .
As Sueleen keeps saying - just my opinion.

While he was a daredevil, he was also a real person. A human being with a family who loved him and will miss him. It's a human tragedy despite what he did for a living. Yes, he was reckless and too risks, but think of all he taught us.
I think it's very sad, as now his little boy will grow up without a daddy, and Irwin himself was relatively young.
Sorry for all the sentiment, I've been very touchy about death lately, and this makes me very sad for some unknown reason. I guess it shows that no matter how we live our life, we're all mortal.
Okay, I'm done now, I promise.

Let this ignorant slut clarify some things. I don't doubt that Steve Irwin did a lot of good and taught a lot of people about the animal kingdom. But he did so by taking unnecessary risks to his life. It was sensationalist TV and we watched. While he was young and single he only had himself to answer to and support.
Then he had CHILDREN and didn't change his wild behavior, in fact he put his child at risk to make even MORE sensational TV. THAT is what I have a problem with. When he became a parent, IT IS MY OPINION, that he should have changed his act. Take it to the class rooms, write books, use the footage he had collected over the years to reduce the risk that his children would grow up fatherless. THAT IS WHAT I AM SAYING.

Crocodiles, actually... (just kidding).
I always thought, because of all the dangerous things he did, that he would be practically invinsible, but then die by getting his hand stuck in a toaster or something. Horrible that it's all on video, wonder if it'll ever be shown. Knowing his wife, she might even request that it be shown so as to warn others about the dangers. RIP.

What's the big difference between being killed by provoking a crocodile or provoking a stingray?
What would REALLY be ironic is if he died doing something mundane that went wrong. This is not a big leap from crocodile baiting.
The perspective around here is, as usual, baffling.

Sueleen, I definitely understand what you mean, but I just feel the need to point out again that he DID know what he was doing. It was definitely very dangerous and everything, but he had devoted his life to studying these things and understanding how they work so that he COULD go out and do those things and not get hurt. you know? It was a job- a more dangerous job than a lot of others, for sure, but a job, and he was a professional. And again, the MAIN reason I feel the need to defend his decisions is that he really DIDNT die doing anything that dangerous! its just that people are comingg on and talking about it as if he got killed by a crocodile or something like that. THEN I would totally understand the point you guys are making. But.. he DIDNT! he died doing something that lots and lots of average, everyday people have done. Again, I've gone swimming with stingrays. So... even now, there's really no reason to say that it was his decisions that caused him to be killed. It COULD have been, possibly, but it wasn't.
and Rathnait62, there is a HUUGE difference. It is very, very, VERY rare to get stung and killed by a stingray. I mean, honestly, what would be the chances of getting stung so near to the heart that you would die? its very unlikely, and a risk that TONS of people take. Swimming with stingrays is an attraction in a lot of places- its KNOWN for not being all that dangerous. Little kids can even do it, as long as their parents are watching them and everything. Its not really much different then going to a big thempark and happening to like.. fall off off a rollercoaster and die or something. it really isn't.

Well said.
Frankly, I would be less surprised if it had David Blaine who died from something like this.
I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:31pmThough i doubt there would be as much outsry after his death. All he's ever taught us is how idiotic it is to try draw attention to yourself the way he does. Steve taught us so much, including how to clamp onto a croc's mouth, and other things that might be useful if you get stranded in the everglades...

Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:34pmWow... so he didn't life the way others expected him to... he lived life to the fullest, enjoyed it and took tremendous risks. I'm sure his wife knew what she was getting into when she married him, the risks involved. I bet that she would not have wanted him to die any other way than doing what he loved.

Just a question to ponder:
Did 9/11 firefighters and rescue personnel die doing what they loved?
Getting stung by a stingray and dying is far less likely than being killed by a croc. The stingray killing could have happened to anyone- dozens of people swim with them.
Getting killed by a croc is more dangerous but less likely. Why? Because not very many people go around putting their head in a crocs mouth.
It's a dangerous world. Who knows- he could have gotten killed 2 weeks before from a car accident. Would that have been more or less of a shock? Would it be because he wasn't doing "what he loved?"
