"Let this ignorant slut clarify some things. I don't doubt that Steve Irwin did a lot of good and taught a lot of people about the animal kingdom. But he did so by taking unnecessary risks to his life. It was sensationalist TV and we watched. While he was young and single he only had himself to answer to and support.
Then he had CHILDREN and didn't change his wild behavior, in fact he put his child at risk to make even MORE sensational TV. THAT is what I have a problem with. When he became a parent, IT IS MY OPINION, that he should have changed his act. Take it to the class rooms, write books, use the footage he had collected over the years to reduce the risk that his children would grow up fatherless. THAT IS WHAT I AM SAYING."
But the reason his message was heard by so many people is because he was a bit different. Do you really think he'd have been nearly as popular if he just stood around and talked. He drew attention to conservation by being different, and in doing so, inspired a whole new generation of naturalists. He made being a biologist fun again. Kids (and adults, for that matter) could watch his show and say, "that looks like a cool job."
By your logic, should all policeman and firefighters change careers when they have children? What about other biologists who live in the Serengetti studying lions? Or the guy who works the overnight shift at the convenience store? Or construction workers? The list goes on...
It's a great tragedy his children will now grow up fatherless, and that a woman has lost her husband. However, he was still doing his job, and doing it darn well. To suggest he ought to suddenly change professions is silly. I suspect his wife would even have laughed at such a notion.

Posted: 9/4/06 at 2:44pmI was so bummed to hear this news. Steve Irwin may have been crazy, but he was fun to watch, and his show was educational as well, so props to him. RIP Steve, my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Oi Vey! This is terrible news, and it is a shocker becuase of the way he died. Anyways, I think that he would have gotten harmed.
There is no reason to call names, and I have no idea why this is turning into a huge debate. This thread was mean to mourn the loss of an animal lover. Why should there be arguing?

That's really great that he taught complete strangers how to foil crocodile attacks (a common problem, eh?).
Unfortunately, he won't be around to teach real-life lessons to his children.

This news has left me and my entire family extremely sad. My little brother is obsessed with crocodiles, snakes, scorpions, spiders and the like. When he was little, he absolutely ADORED watching The Crocodile Hunter. He was very upset when he first heard of Steve's death.
My thoughts and prayers go to his wife and children. You may not have agreed with his methods, but Steve was a man who loved what he did and worshiped his family. He will be greatly missed.

No, sadly he won't be around anymore to teach his children - but there is a least one more child out there alive due in part to his teaching. And at least one thankful family who is probably grieving for him, too.
It's just too bad, regardless of how you look at it, that's all.

Doesn't "turning" imply very soon?
I'm having a birthday in a few weeks, and I am nowhere near "turning" yet.
But I'm very very old.

Well, if we're getting into semantics, "turning" could be construed as, "will be 3 this year but isn't as of yet". Next time I'll be sure to say, "Daughter's YOB: 1998, Son's YOB: late-2003---***WARNING: BIRTHDAY NOT IMMINENT***".
And JFTR, my birthday is near yours, and I'll start telling people I'm "turning" a year older around mid-July. But then again, I'm not old enough to have walked over Noah's Arc AND the Brooklyn Bridge, so I can see why you try to delay the announcement as long as possible.

And what an awful, awful way to die. You can't say he died doing what he loved because nobody "loves" being stabbed. I read somewhere that this is equivalent to getting stabbed with a bayonet.
Crikey, indeed...

I saw the obituary on msn.com, and I thought it was a practical joke. I think my heart missed a few beats, because although everything he did was dangerous, he just seemed invincible. I've given my share of, "how can he still be alive?"s, but watching his tv shows, you're always thinking, "everything will turn out okay in the end."
A stingray, of all things.
Rest in Peace.

After I had seen the news on CNN I was channel surfing and on CMT they had on the Tim McGraw video "Live Like You Were Dying". Just an odd coincidence...and seemed somehow appropriate given the circumstances.
