So they were filming? Am I the only one here wondering if this attack and death were recorded?
I guess so.

god, My mouth dropped when I logged in to AOL and this news popped up. I always made fun of him and was like "I'll laugh when a crocidile bites him arm off..."
But now there is no laughter, just shock, you never think that someone like that would die so soon...

This is delayed but it's so sad that he died. I used to love his show and watched it all the time. His poor family

Posted: 9/4/06 at 8:19pmThis is so awful--his poor family. I actually met him once, when he was hosting Regis & Kelly. Hope I didn't give him a curse or something... nah. It's probably just the fact that he made a living by agitating deadly animals. Still, very sad.

His death was in fact caught on video. Apparently the video shows him pulling the tail out of his own chest, then he loses conscioussness. The video is being held by police at the moment, for their investigation. Also, he's going to be given a state funeral if his family wants it.

Something mentioned on Australian news reports tonight was that in recent years he has given something like $20 million to various animal welfare funds across the globe. Mainly for endangered species.
His body has been flown to the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane for his funeral.
vmlinnie, the program that he was filming was a show aimed at very young children and that's where his daughter's involvement came in.
The Discovery Channel has set up a charity fund on his behalf called The Crikey Fund.

I mean no disrespect to this man or his family, but, really, the reason so many people are making a fuss about this has more to do with our obsession with celebrity than anything else.
People, falsely, believe they "know" someone because they watch him or her on TV or "follow" their careers or whatever.
When I see the list of "anonymous" names in the paper chronicling who died in Iraq during the past week--mostly very young men, some I'm sure with children, others who have barely begun to live their "adult" lives--that's when I feel sorrow.
I think a lot of people on the board just question why Irwin's death seems so important to many posters when he made a choice to put his life at risk. People die tragically everyday--and not because they chose to be where they were--yet no one mentions it.
Sueleen is making a point here about celebrity--whether intentional or not. He's taking the "fan factor" out of the equation and looking at this from a more personal, human perspective. When a man or woman dies--whether killed or from "natural causes"--we may read that they left behind children and think, "It's so sad that these kids must now grow up without their mother or father." But Steve Irwin brought two children into the world and, it seems, did not alter his behavior in an effort to consider their lives first. Is this not a reasonable expectation of parents?
Yes, his wife chose, accepted and supported him, but his children did not get to "choose." That's what your parents are supposed to do until you are old enough to do so.
Also, keep in mind that Sue is in Chicago where six children just died in a fire--that might have been prevented. He's thinking about the real victims in both incidents: children whose lives have been forever affected by the irresponsibility of adults.

Germaine Greer sure didn't hold back.
"There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies.
"There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle.
"Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.
"The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing ten times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."

Posted: 9/5/06 at 2:20pmIt turns out that they are, indeed going to show the video on TV as I suggested earlier. Channel 9 was his channel, so I presume that's where it will be on. His family have requested it, to warn others I suppose. They say that's what he wanted. Though to be honest, even if they didn't want it shown it probably would have leaked onto the internet somehow.

Wow. Warn others about what? Can't the fact that he died be warning enough? I just can't fathom a wife wanting her husband's death broadcast for all to see. Especially her children.

Well, this should definitely clearly demonstrate how completely out of WHACK this whole situation is. I mean, why not put it on pay per view and use the money to Raise Stingray Awareness?
Get Bon Jovi to record a rockin' theme song:
Stung through the heart
And you're to blame
You give stingrays a bad name!
Have plenty of pyrotechnics like a WWE pay per view craptacular!
