David Gurland presents a newly updated version of his critically
acclaimed tribute show NEUROTICA: MADONNA RE-VISITED. Timed to
coincide with the release of Madonna's newest single (Hung Up) and
album (Confessions on a Dance Floor), performances begin October 14th
at Ace of Clubs.
NEUROTICA: MADONNA RE-VISITED features covers of twenty
career-spanning songs made popular by the Material Girl. Some are
presented straight forward, some are radically re-envisioned; there
are also unique medleys and mash-ups as well as some surprising
non-musical moments. Blending rock, theater and cabaret, NEUROTICA:
MADONNA RE-VISITED is the next best thing to a live Madonna concert.
In addition to Gurland, NEUROTICA: MADONNA RE-VISITED features
arrangements and musical direction by Michael Holland, back-up vocals
by Rob Maitner and Jonathan Tomaselli, Jerry Smith on drums, and Marco
Brehm on bass.
"David Gurland soars with a tenor that's sweeter than honey... he
sings with a passion, personality and a puckish sense of humor that's
all his own," exclaimed the Daily News. Gurland has been seen at The
Cutting Room, The Bitter End,Town Hall, CBGB's, The Living Room,
Don't Tell Mama, The Duplex, and Fez, as well as out of town venues LA
and San Diego. Neurotica was originally presented in May 2005 at The
Encore where it enjoyed two separate sold-out engagements. It was also
presented as part of Ace of Clubs Pride Music Series in July.
Neurotica is Gurland and Holland's second collaboration on an evening
of music by Madonna; the first was 2002's acclaimed The Gurley Show.
Gurland's accolades include 4 MAC Award nominations, the MAC/Hanson
Award, a Gay and Lesbian American Music Award nomination, and three
Bistro Awards, one of which recognized his eponymous 1999 debut CD.
Michael Holland (musical direction/arrangements) is a MAC and Bistro
Award Winner. He was selected as the 2004 Outmusic Outstanding
Songwriter of the Year. Show Business Weekly recently noted that
Holland is "clearly more talented than anyone should be allowed."
NEUROTICA: MADONNA RE-VISITED runs October 14 - November 11, Fridays
at 8pm. At Ace of Clubs (9 Great Jones Street, inside Acme --
accessible from the 6 train at Bleecker or the B,D,V,F trains at

I've heard from 4 different and completely unrelated sources - that the show is terrific - and of course they all threw in "You would love it" - AS IF I was a big Madonna fan or something - -since the run is extended , I do hope to catch it!!!
Give me a Madonna song over that " Jessie wants to be juicy. Lucy wants to be Jessie" or whatever crap that is, anyday!.....
Or for that matter "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" or "Sooner or Later."
*so confused about voiceanth's quote*

Madonna's Andrew Lloyd Weber and Stephen Sondheim work is among her most beloved.

He is so like groovy! Both of them really!
As a 20-year Madonna fan, her Sondheim and Lloyd Webber work is to me, some of the most boring. Maybe not as bad as "A Certain Sacrifice" or "Swept Away" (although her body in Swept Away is one redeeming quality).
Give me "Into the Groove" "Paradise (Not for Me)" "Causing a Commotion" or "Where's the Party" over "What's New, Buenos Aires."

Well when she recorded those dreadful Sondheim songs - the real joke was how her OWN songs that SHE wrote - were BETTER than his......
I mean, hello, "Vogue".....! The Greatest song of the 1990's!
Her very own "Weeekend in the Country"...

Wing needs to tour!! !!!
Liz Rosenberg would have a field day with this one!!
I hate both Sondheim and John Mayer. Just hate them. Well, I don't know them. I should say I hate their music. And, in the case of the dull-as-dishwater Mayer, I hate the delivery, too! Come to think of it, I hate Madonna, too. This is a ConvinceMe2's worst singers' - songwriters' thread.

"Well when she recorded those dreadful Sondheim songs"
LOL. Madonna won both Sondheim and ALW Academy Awards.
Sondheim does not write "dreadful" songs.
Yes, he does.

"Yes, he does."
Really? Well if Sondheim is so bad care to explain why he won 7 Tonys for his scores?
These are the same people who awarded Glenn Close a Best Actress in a Musical Tony for her wretched performance in SUNSET BLVD. Just because somebody is given an award, doesn't make them good. He so great that all his shows are big hits that the public just wants to see, over and over again. If Sondheim writes good music, then what's that stuff that Rodgers, Gershwin, Lowe and Herman write?

1. There were two nominees the year Glenn won. Someone had to get it.
2. You're right about people getting awards not meaning they are good. However, 7 awards is different than one fluke award.
3. Rodgers was fantastic! He was also Sondheims mentor.
If Sondheim is not a good songwriter in your book? Who is?
I just named 4 of them in my other post. Also, I believe it was Hammerstein who was Sondheim's mentor. Trivia question: Who was the first person to sing a Sondheim composed song in public?

Yes you're right about Hammerstein. I always confuse them. The first person to sing a Sondheim song in public was Sondheim himself at the home of Oscar Hammerstein. The song was sung in front of about 40 of Oscars guests and the song was called "Whistling" from "Mary Poppins"
