DWTS Cast

Well, I don't think it does work, but I do agree with you. But, I'm sure there are a million dancers who look as plain and act as well. There is simply no reason for her to be cast, except for her dancing skills. Not that Wiki is the bible, but I just looked up the film and here's part of what is says about casting:

Casting

Director Ardolino was adamant that they choose dancers who could also act, as he did not want to use the "stand-in" method that had been used with the 1983 Flashdance. For the female lead of Frances "Baby" Houseman, Bergstein chose the 26-year-old Jennifer Grey, daughter of the Oscar-winning actor and dancer Joel Grey of the 1972 film Cabaret who, like her father, was also a trained dancer. They then sought a male lead, initially considering 20-year-old Billy Zane, who had the visual look desired (originally the Johnny character was to be Italian and have a dark exotic look) but initial dancing tests when he was partnered with Grey did not meet expectations. The next choice was 34-year-old Patrick Swayze, who had been noticed for his roles in The Outsiders and Red Dawn, in which he had co-starred with Grey. Swayze was a seasoned dancer, with experience from the Joffrey Ballet. The producers were thrilled with him, but Swayze's agent was against the idea. However, Swayze read the script, liked the multi-leveled character of Johnny, and took the part anyway and Johnny was changed from being Italian to Irish. Grey was not happy about the choice, as she and Swayze had had difficulty getting along on Red Dawn. However, the two of them met, worked things out, and when they did their dancing screen test, the chemistry between them was obvious. Bergstein described it as "breathtaking".[10]

I think Grey did most of the dancing in Dirty Dancing. She didn't do the scene where Baby and Johnny are dancing on the log because she thought it was too dangerous.

Jennifer, Brandy, and Kyle were AMAZING! Bristol wasn't bad at all. The Hoff, Situtation, and Margaret Cho need to be gone ASAP!

The best and worst we can say about Bristol is that she's no Kate Gosselin. She held her own when she was moving but there was a bit too much of literally just standing there.

Kyle Massey was thought to be one of the first to go based on name recognition but he was so good last night he might be in for the long haul.

Would be nice if the Hoff exited first, but I have the feeling it's going to be Margaret Cho. That backfired big time.

I thought for a first week performance, and having no show biz background whatsoever, Bristol held her own. I think Margaret Cho might go tonight. The Situation sucked, but he only had 5 days rehearsal to the others' 3 weeks. And I think a lot of idiots (me included) watch Jersey Shore. Florence Henderson was not good, and I sort of expected her to be a lot better. But I think a lot of that is Corky's fault. What kind of grown man is named Corky anyway?

I agree about Corky. Florence seemed game for more than what she was given.

Loved Jennifer Grey. I hope she can keep it up. Surprisingly, I like Kyle Massey too, although I just find the shows he was on stupid. Bristol Palin wasn't great, but I can't see her getting voted off this early based on what she did in comparison to others.

David Hasselhoff was plain creepy with his facial expressions. He can go back to Germany where he is supposedly popular.

The Situation is just a douchebag. I can't believe he is calling himself that for this show. I mean, I do watch Jersey Shore sometimes, and maybe except for JWoww, they seem to call each other by their given names. At least I think I remember people referring to The Situation and Snooki as Mike and Nicole a few times.

Based on the dancing, Hoff should go, but if I had to bet, I'd tell Cho to pack her bags. Grey was amazing, and Massey was a huge surprise. As for Bristol, I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't the total train wreck I had hoped for. I think the Jersey Shore guy did pretty well, considering his lack of preparation. Florence Henderson could hand around for awhile. Rick Fox (how beautiful must the kids he had with Vanessa Willaims be?)also impressed, but it's hard to imagine that the height differential will not become a problem.

I agree about the height difference between Rick and Cheryl. I was wondering why they didn't pair Kym up with him because she at least seems like she is taller then Cheryl, but then David Hasselhoff isn't short either.

I was most surprised by Audrina...I thought she was pretty good and her scores were too low, imo.

I think many of the others were overpraised, but I hate the judges anyway.

I'm most disappointed in Cho. After all the teary talk of being called the fat ballerina as a kid, she simply went for the joke and it wasnt funny.

Loved Henderson's f-bombs. I think for her age she did great. She seems to have some mobility problems, on one side in particular. I hope she stays for a long while, but she wont be winning, fer sure.

Disney kid was great...loving him and Lacey, though I kind of hate the blonde.

Grey looks great and danced the best imo, trained or not. I do think there's a hint of crazy there, tho.

I was surprised that Bristol held her own - and loved Brandy, Jennifer, Kyle, and Rick. I did not get the praise for the football player - he looked stiff and not graceful (at least to me).

I think Hoff or the Situation should be booted. Hopefully the Hoff. Michael Bolton was pretty awful for an entertainer as well.

I think Cho could have done much better had she done a formal dance, as opposed to a comedy routine. I hope she sticks around for a bit to see if she can overcome it.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. But I still think Jennifer Grey had an awful nose job.

me too, doodlenyc. i didn't get it at all. but i wonder if her partner is the one to blame. i think the pros sometimes shortchange the "stars" (for some, that word is stretching it). i think she was capable of a poignant, personal performance.

Last night Carrie-Ann said that the Hoff was similar to Donny Osmond and Jerry Springer. The Hoff is NO Donny Osmond! Donny was a very good dancer and David is nowhere near as talented.

My sentiments exactly! I missed what The Situation said to Len before Len responded with the guns comment...?

I agree that Lacey looks horrible as a blonde. In my opinion, there are too few brunettes who can pull off blonde hair, not to say that there aren't any.

I think the Donny Osmond comment was supposed to be taken as David Hasselhoff was entertaining, but in a funny and bad way, which is why Jerry Springer was mentioned.

GG, I'm sure Louis deserves most of the blame, since he's the choreog. He did the same with Lecy last year, trying to hide flaws with comedy and it was never very funny. I think it was safe to go that route. Would love Margaret to pull off a Kelly Osbourne.

I think the Situation should be kicked off for his mouth. Whatta jackass! Didnt catch exactly what he said either, but it was clearly a wiseass crack.

I think the big mistake with Margaret's dance was bringing out those wing things. The color guard girls used those during one of our field shows one year when we were doing Cirque Du Soleil. It was just an odd dance though, considering the song.

I think the fans didn't vote for the Hoff because they had to save Kym from him. It's a shame- she's an amazing dancer but the Hoff was creeping on her. I don't think Bristol was good at all. Of course, I don't believe she belongs on the show either. To say that she did better than Khate is not much of a compliment and I also believe that the entertainment shows are saying too many nice things about Bristol- again- undeserved! (she ought to be able to move well- she's young and an athlete- just no grace- but she went on the show so she's fair game) I'm also hoping Corky will do a better job of choreographing and instead of making Florence look like a cute old lady- he needs to make her elegant- because she is! People are saying that Derek once again got a good partner. Yeah- it's a shame that he gets the partners who work their butts off! He's also a talented choreographer and knows how to showcase his partners. Audrina is there for the eye candy. Personally, I think she is vacant and many people are voting for Tony because of what he had to put up with last year. She's also young and should be able to move well. Gotta give Kyle props- he was fun and entertaining and he's been in the business for a long time.

My mom was debating if Hasselhoff was sober or not on Monday. It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't. But, the Baywatch footage was enough to make me lose my appetite.

Bristol at this point, reminds me of Susan Lucci. She has a little bit more rhythm than Kate last season. It also helps that she doesn't have a bitch face on the entire time. I'll have to see next week to make better predictions on who is good and who is not. Some people end up just being 1 hit wonders.
