Yeah there is always the Ax-murdered connotation. I can't get past this being an open secret for years, he always plays effeminate men, he was on a huge hit TV show that WOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED except for the gay men at every level of production- and still he stayed in the closet.

And now that he finally edges out, everyone is so "Proud" of him. If you really believe that personal life is nobody's business, why even read this thread? Does anyone believe that "Personal life" crap? He gives hundreds of interviews, is profiled on Entertainment Tonight about his hobbies, his dog, his vacation plans and never a mention of his spousal equivilent? Gosh imagine if they covered Brad Pitt that way.

I'm just sick of closet cases I guess.

But good for him, fo acknowledging it publicly. I don't believe that he is under any obligation to share that information with the world. Just because he is a celebrity doesn't mean he is required to be some kind of role model. The world has its Ellens and Rosies for that. I feel like he is a guy just trying to live his private life as much out of the public eye as he can.

I agree with jacob. I have no problems with celebs such as Jodie Foster and (up till now), Mr. Hyde Pierce, who just don't discuss it. My hackles are only raised by the blatant liars and deniers.

I think it's great that an incredibly well-known tv personality is now out, when he could have continued to keep his life private. It can't hurt.

It's great that he came out officially, but, I ask in a shocked voice "David Hyde Pierce came out?!? Who's next, Richard Simmons?" It is truly great when stars come out and be proud of who they are, but it's always a "Duh" moment. I would love it if someone truly unexpected came out. For instance, and mind you this is just and example, but let's say someone like a Clint Eastwood came out of the closet. That would truly be shocking and wonderful.

Well, keep in mind that he didn't exactly come out. A writer made a reference to his partner. That reference wouldn't impact most of middle america. They'd think "business partner" before they'd think gay. So, I'm not sure we can applaud him. He didn't do anything. Maybe how he responds to any further media questions will be worthy of applaud, but not thusfar.

Oh, for GOD'S SAKE! I am sick of all this attitude about what OTHER people choose to do with their own existence! You know why I think he deserves applause? For putting up with all the hand-wringing, mud-slinging judgementalism from anyone that is not living HIS life - which is EVERYONE but HIM!

You want to make a big deal about whether someone is out or not? Then go publicize your OWN sexuality and become a spokesperson - because that's the ONLY one you or anyone else has a right or need to comment on!

Maybe this is me playing devil's adovcate, but I don't really see what touchme said as being all that inflammatory, DG. What he said is more about the people making a big deal out of this than DHP himself. I think it's silly and disingenuous to call the man "amazing" or an inspiration simply because he partner was mentioned off-handedly in an article.

I'm a little torn on this issue...actors (at least in my valueless opinion) ALWAYS share some part of themseles when they perform--that's what makes it special--and while it may not be important that WE know who's gay or not, it does matter I think. That actor or performer is sharing his or her life experience/artistry and all that's extremely personal.

And our enjoyment of their work is also personal and intimate--how many of us have wept to "We Do Not Belong Together?" When we do, we connect with Bernadette and Mandy--not in any real concrete sense, but the emotional bond is there.

I've waited to see DEUCE because I want Angela to be great but also I dread seeing her live because I'm going to burst into tears--she really does mean that much to me--a total stranger.

So I totally respect an actor's right to privacy--but it's not like he/she has an ordinary job--these people bare their souls for us and we in turn give them love and support, both emotional and financial. Which doesn't buy us entry into their lives, but it also means their job doesn't stop just because the credits roll or the curtain falls.

And I don't think this is at all the case with DHP, but it seems to me that alot of stars enjoy ebing famous when it behooves them, like when going to pick up a swag bag in the hospitality suite but the same people aren't so keen to be famous when they are faced with something they'd rather not do, like sign autographs...

Touch - you're right. I think I was just so frustrated after reading through ANOTHER discussion like this, that I wasn't entirely objective when I read your post - it just happened to be the one at the end of the line.

And I'm sorry for 'yelling', by the way - no matter what I was feeling, there's really no reason to get so carried away.

Although, just for the record, the thoughts I expressed I still stand by (in a general sense.)
