"Obama himself was on the ground & pulled the trigger. Bin laden is now a martyr

Let us forget the high gas prices & & keller unemployment & everything else. A figurehead living in a cave has been killed. Lets relect Obama solely on that. If so, the American people are more gullible than I thought. A lot can happen in 2 years.

This may only be the beginning. Time will tell."

We re-elected Bush to capture a dictator whose country we invaded on false pretenses despite Bush breaking his earlier promises on running a non-nation building, realist foreign policy platform.

I know Pakistan is a third-world country in some people's eyes but there is a difference between a mansion in Abbottabad and a cave. bin Laden's personal wealth helped fund and allow many terrorist attacks that killed innocent citizens. So at the very least a major donor and plotter was killed tonight.

Why turn on CNN when I have Facebook and BWW to keep me in the know?

I am not sure how to react. Of course, I am glad he is gone but I doubt this moment has us magically leaving Aghanistan or suddenly pulling back our intel presence in Pakistan. Yes, bin Laden was the mastermind of a terrorist organization but his death is not ending our role in the region

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Al Quida is highly organized and I have to believe that someone else is already set to step up and take Osama's place. And due to his failing health I have to think that he's more of a figurehead than a strategist these days anyway.

And, this is a group that believes very strongly in retribution. Have we just poked their sleeping giant?

I have to agree with Eris. As soon as I heard that Bin Ladin was killed, I thought of retaliatory terrorist attacks. Suddenly all of this is giving me 9/11 flashbacks.

I see people on facebook/twitter talking about how the soldiers can come home now and I just have to shake my head. This is not an ending - there are too many people out there to pick up Osama's cause to just say "okay, we're done".

I have to give Roxy credit. He never misses an opportunity to make himself look like the idiot that he time and again has proven himself to be.

Eris, I guess those people were not paying attention to Obama's speech. It was not like he got out of a plane on an aircraft carrier in a flightsuit to give this news.

All US embassies have been put on alert for potential retaliation according to al-Jazeera English.

But I will say the operations of the US looking for people like bin-Laden put them at odds with the communities who while unsympathetic to the causes of the terror groups, felt like they were put in the cross-hairs and were usually left picking up the pieces. I recommend looking at the documentaries Restrepo and Armadillo if not for just the awesome scenes of the fighting (and I hate to say this but it is indeed amazing to watch), the strained relations between the soldiers and the communities are probably the most depressing parts about the war in Afghanistan.

EDIT: Don't forget May Day, Eris. How an American event became an international holiday hardly celebrated in America- I will never know.

Bush will be in mourning..wasn't he and his family lose personal friends withe the Bin Laden family?

Remember Bush was the one who once said about Bin Laden "I don't Know where he is. I don't care where he is."

Eris, since it was a Mets-Phillies game there were probably a LOT of New Yorkers in the stands (The Vet was called Shea South for a reason, record be damned Ding-Dong Bin Ladin's Dead).

al-Jazeera said Obama gave the order on Friday and that this has been in play since last September.

Speaking of Bush, it seems the Republican comment has been to avoid Obama's name entirely in the process (Sarah Palin) or, consider Obama's order merely a legacy to all the 'good' by the Bush administration (Andy Card and Eric Cantor). Yep, all those years of less emphasis on the terrorist state responsible for the attack on us and on Iraq. Great move.

The Bush family must be in mourning..weren't they close friends with the Bin Ladens?

Remember not long after 9/11 Bush was asked by a reporter where Bin laden was and Bush replied "I Don't know where he is. I don't really care where he is."

Will Obama produce the death certificate?

Because Bin Laden was SO WANTED,I hope we have pictures of some sort or confirmation of his death to provide those who will doubt this. As much as I support Obama, people are suspicious of things like this. I can smell a conspiracy Regarding Bin Laden's death taking form. This should go well for Obama unless 6 months from now Bin Laden reappears and it turns out we killed a decoy. Could be Obama's "Mission:Accomplished" moment. Just throwing that out there.

An interesting editorial from the Huffington Post:

It is a strange and conflicting emotion to celebrate a death. My professed beliefs include the redemption of evil and the potential good in all humanity. Yet I felt a sense of exhilaration when I read the headline 'DEAD' about Osama Bin Laden.

For the last ten years Osama Bin Laden has exemplified the absolute worst of religion. He was a fundamentalist and a zealot in his own belief and willing to kill those who believed differently; he recruited young people into his ranks by preying on their despair; and he carried out violence in the name of God. Through actions and belief, Osama Bin Laden profaned the name of God and denigrated all people of faith.

Osama Bin Laden never felt any remorse for his murderous ways and the heartbreak that trailed behind him. He viewed his actions as part of a struggle that allowed him to transcend any moral concerns. He and his followers routinely slaughtered the innocent. He was ruthless in using faith as a means to the very worst ends. To reiterate what the President said in his announcement of bin Laden's death: "Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader, he was a mass murderer of Muslims." His death is satisfying not only because of what he did, but because it prevents him from doing any more violence in the future in the name of religion.

When I think of bin Laden I think of evil.

But I have to be careful in my celebrations of bin Laden's death. I was a chaplain at Columbia University during September 11, 2001. Two days after the attacks, some of my students put on an art exhibit in response called Peace Kitchen. In one piece a student had put a film of bin Laden's face over a mirror so we saw our own face staring back at us through his. The point was not that there was equivalency between Bin Laden and us, but to acknowledge that evil is not something that only exists outside of us that we can point to and kill once and for all. Evil doesn't work like that. All humans have the potential for grace, but we also all have the potential to sin and do evil. It is a tempting yet dangerous practice to look around the world for evil people and target them. That is just what Osama Bin Laden thought he was doing. We must be vigilant that we do not become what we despise. We must be careful in the way we use religion and the name of God to further our own causes or to ever manipulate people into hate or hate.

So, let us mute our celebrations. Let any satisfaction be grim and grounded in the foundation of justice for all who have suffered at bin Laden's bloody hands. And also justice for crimes against God -- for using God as an instrument of terror and and promoting distrust between peoples of different religions and nations. Let us put bin Laden's body in the ground, and in doing so bury his disastrous and blasphemous religious legacy.

Ultimately, judgment is not ours to make. But I believe in a just God and I believe that Osama Bin Laden, for all the talk of rewards in heaven, will not be enjoying his meeting with the God of Creation.
