At one point last night, one of the newscasters (the insufferable David Gregory) actually sounded petulant that the White House pulled this off without leaking it to or involving the press. I laughed.
i have "courtesy of the red, white and blue" on permanent repeat and plan to go up on the roof later and snipe me some turban wearers is honor of this glorious day in which america re-affirms its ability and right to go into your country and kill whoever the f*** we want whenever the f*** we want.

Hold your hats and hallelujah. I went to bed early last night and didn't hear the news till this morning. I really didn't know what to think. Never thought I'd see the day, to be honest.
The question of whether the SEALs went in with orders to capture or to kill is one of the larger questions that only history will really be able to unravel.
If Obama gave the orders to capture Bin Ladin, he would have faced the same problems Bush faced when he captured Khalid Sheikh Mohoammed and Abu Zubaydeh: Where do you bring them and what do you do with them when you get them there?
Civil trial? Military tribunal? Rendition to black site somewhere and interrogate?
If Obama had chosen any of the options, there would have been major negative repercussions.
So it seems like Obama chose the "cleanest" option: execution and disposal of the body.

My "Mother-in-law" had a typical Republican reaction last night when we talked with her during the news coverage: Bin Laden was killed 5 years ago by the Bush Regime. Obama is only announcing it now because he is so unpopular he's claiming credit for it.
Wow, Joe, really? Really?
I knew things would be ridiculous -- but really?
And the members of the Bush administration are letting him get credit 'cause they're just like that?
I almost want to watch Fox 'News' tonight to watch them try to spin this into some sort of vindication of the Bush/Cheney administration.
According to the president of Peru, the late pope John Paul II is responsible for elimintating bin Laden.
Good to know
Well, if you believe in that sort of stuff it does make sense :)
I'm perfectly content with letting Jon Stewart and Bill Maher show me how ridiculous Fox News is going to get.
Stewart, Maher, and Colbert will be having a field day with this news this week!
Keep this in mind whenever anyone tries to spin credit to Bush/Cheney: this took months of discipline and patience. Obama and his inner circle maintained absolute secrecy for the entire time period. No leaks, none whatsoever. There is absoultely nothing that indicates that the Bush adminstration could maintain that level of discipline.

My local paper (which is quite conservative) allows comments after news stories. Right now there are over 330 comments, almost all negative, mostly complaining that Obama used the word "I" too much in his (too long) speech Sunday night.
well, mb, bush wasn't nearly as ruthless as obama in enforcing discipline on those who dare to defy him.

Judson Phillips, the head of Tea Party Nation, said that the death of Osama bin Laden happened in spite of President Barack Obama and criticized the President for announcing the breaking news during Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” Phillips suggested that Obama did not want to give the order to raid bin Laden’s compound but if he “did not act, it would have killed any chance he had at reelection.”
Logic takes a holiday
I'd actually love to learn that the timing of the announcement was deliberately intended to piss off Donald Trump.
I think a big spin here: if it wasn't for Bush/Cheney sanctioned torture and interrogation tactics they would never have been led to the courier who was tracked to the mansion.

That's exactly what my Republican friend said.

After watching CNN, it seems obvious the Pakistanis are liars and can not be trusted.
A lowball price tag on the hunt for Bin Laden: 1.3 trillion.
I love this!

The Ability to Kill Osama Bin Laden Does Not Make America Great
This Washington Post Article has a lot of detail of how the operation took place and the answer to the question of whether Obama's orders were to kill or capture Bin Ladin:
Officially, it was a kill-or-capture mission, since the U.S. doesn’t kill unarmed people trying to surrender. But it was clear from the beginning that whoever was behind those walls had no intention of surrendering, two U.S. officials said.
Phone call led US to bin Laden’s doorstep, capping a hunt that began in a secret CIA prison
